Thanks, I’ve got the Long Range America link. I was looking for the other vendor which now I’ve searched for an I don’t see a version for the North American LC250

Yeah it's a $300 discount if you buy now but ugh, 5 months, plus install cost which I would love to get a ballpark amount on.

Perplexity says it would take "It would take roughly 121–201 auxiliary tank fill-ups at significant savings to pay off the investment, depending on actual fuel price differences and usage scenarios". And that's averaging 20mpg's.

I was interested in this as we're moving to an island off the coast of Maine where there are no gas stations and ferry rides are $50 round trip but oof that's a lot of fill ups!

EDIT: just had Perplexity pull price data for 91 octane in Maine and it says "~242 fill-ups” is closer to how long it would take to make sense or 15yrs for how many miles I generally drive!

Yeah, I’m not surprised but I didn’t even think of it not being good to go for CA. Been waiting since I learned the tank size before the 250 became available. Big bummer. Rotopax it is.

I’m also in so cal and was thinking … could you get this delivered to a shop in az and have them install.

After that your risk is it gets noticed during smog - but maybe if you can get a good relationship with a smog shop they won’t check. I’ve never had any mods on previous cars so I wasn’t paying super close attention, but I feel like smog check doesn’t look under the car

I haven't received the email yet so looking forward to it. That's probably because the fuel tank for the GX 550 is not quite ready.

The nearest installer is in Las Vegas for CA residents. There's another installer in Prescott Valley that will do the install. Just keep things on the lowdown if you decide to use the installers, meaning no indicators that you are from CA.

You can always get someone to pass your smog check when the time comes. It may be more expensive but it will get done.

CA smog definitely looks under the car. They use that rolling mirror to check. I’ve gone to the same shop for 10+ years and he always looks.

My simple solution for small fuel tank: carry extra Rotopax fuels. See my recent post.

In most of the U.S., you can swap to a larger fuel tank as long as it meets federal DOT safety standards, because federal emissions rules don’t treat the tank itself as an emissions device. California is different: under its special Clean Air Act waiver, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) states the fuel tanks itself is part of the emissions control system, so any modification must be certified by CARB through an Executive Order (EO). Without that approval, even a DOT-compliant larger tank is considered illegal tampering. That’s why virtually all aftermarket tanks are sold as “49-state legal” but not approved for California. Only the OEM tank is allowed.
