Airbox Critter Screen

Anyone know the part # or the name of the pad in the bottom of the airbox. I found mine destroyed today and about 20 nuts underneath!!!! I believe from squirrels but possibly rats or mice. I would like to replace it as soon as I get some wire to cover the opening. Thanks!

Others may correct me, but I believe it has been determined that that black pad is not offered as a separate part. It is only available as included with the box.

Not sure what its function is. Possibly just to dampen whooshing air noise.

Ed1, Thanks for the information. I'm trying to devise some sort of screen to keep them out!

The pad by it's self is "unobtainium"
Not sure if you visited this post.....

Yes, I had read it sometime back and should have been working on the mod. I guess I was naive enough to think I was immune to the critter infestation. I'm just returning from the hardware store and am equipped with some wire and a brand-new pair of tin snips! Thanks for the follow-up!

Well, I completed what I think will work for the critters in my air box. After I found the mess they made, I pulled everything out to clean the area up and spray some repellent. I got curious about the snorkel that was attached to the fender, so I pulled i and decided to attack the problem there.
I made a cardboard template and cut some hardware wire (please wear gloves) to fit the opening being careful to keep some of the cut wire on the outside of the opening I then secured that wire to the plastic with some JB Weld. Once cured I test fitted but was concerned it might not make a good seal going back into the fender. I then covered the edge of my repair with some pliable weather strip adhesive and again test fitted. Convinced this would seal I replaced the snorkel and reassembled the airbox and filter sans the "charcoal pack" that was destroyed. I attached some pic's to show my work. I hope no one else experiences this but if you do I hope this is helpful. Thanksto everyone who reached out with advice and help.

Why the heck doesn’t Toyota do this at the factory? We can’t be the only country in the world that has rodents!!!…

I’ve been wanting to draw up and print a screen that sits between the air box inlet and bracket, but I’m concerned with reducing air flow. Even 1/4” hardware cloth technically restricts air flow by 10-15% or so. Printed plastic can only be so thin. Maybe there’s a way to do it so the printed bracket secures a piece of hardware cloth.

I have a spare air box coming so I’ll see what I can draw up, and share the files if something functional comes out of it.

The fallback is hvac foil tape. The professional grade stuff is rated to 350+ F, more than adequate for under hood temps.

Perhaps the "screen" could be sandwiched between two pieces that would just plug into the filter side of the airbox? The factory filter is thick but a K&N is shallower. That might allow for enough space?

video of removal:
doesn't look difficult, just time consuming to be careful not to break all that plastic.

Thanks for posting this warning video, that hurt to watch. I will remove my cowling and trim myself when it's time for a windshield.

I'll regret saying this, I've never seen this issue in Alabama (too hot apparently). Are there lots of rats out there in the West?

I can't speak for the West but in West Virginia, and I am rural (very). We have tons of mice, rats, chipmunk's, squirrels, that just love vehicles for some odd reason. I have property in west central the eastern part of the state near VA border and they are abundant in both areas. I do hear through the grapevine that the larger breeds of rodents sometimes gather in the DC area!

Nort Central Alabama has critters as well, I don't care what anyone says!

If there are Land Cruisers, there are people. If there are people there is food. If there is food, there are rodents.

That's why this mod isn't optional: Cheap, effective, prevents major failures. @EOD Guy, best kind of mod- value add!

I’m in Western North Carolina. But yes. They are here. And there were too many to count in north central Florida, and likewise in southwestern Idaho.

Between the cat & K&N chain it’s a start. I just need to get the cat in the garage. Still think the chain mail armor in the K&N helps, but probably the petroleum spirits imbedded in the K&N filter media may be the best deterrent! Just kidding guys - sorry you’re having that rodent problem.

Have you looked at these articles on soy-based wiring harnesses?

I do agree the pad in the filter housing is looking more & more like it was intended as a sound deadener.
