🪦 RIP Transmission at only 6500mi (2024 LCLC)

I got the cruiser back today after 33 days at the dealership - only 23 business days, so 7 business days short of lemon law. Everything seems to be working normally, as expected. Nice to have it back, I was getting tired of the Tacoma's length and squeezed in cab!

They said there has not been a TSB yet on this issue, so the transmission they put in is brand new, but identical. That's what I expected, but it would have been nice to be reassured that "the new one won't do that!"

They were still unable to make any guess as to a possible reason for why the failure happened. So it's unsettling to not know if the Land Cruiser blew up the transmission or if the transmission blew itself up.

I'll report back when it fails next time.

For now, I'm noticing the clunky downshifts when stopping at intersections, just like when the cruiser was new - which seems to anecdotally agree with the suggestion that those get better with time.

TLDR: new transmission installed, MPG unchanged..
 
UPDATE -November 9th: I’ve heard back from the customer experience people. They’re refunding 100% of what I paid and I’m turning it in. I hated to do it, I love a lot of things about this car. But, when it comes right down to it, I simply don’t trust it anymore.

Same thing happened to me last night. Stop at on onramp to get onto the freeway, a huge jolt and noise from the back of the truck (large enough for me to think I was hit. Looked back and no one was even close to me.) I got the Drive/Start Control Malfunction and the Hybrid System Malfunction. The Drive Mode switch light was out, and so was the dash animation showing the different settings. Car was driving ok, but I was in stop-and-go traffic, never getting much over 20mph. After driving a few miles it became stuck in second gear. I tried switching over to manual shifting and changing gears that way, but nothing. So, I pulled off the freeway, shut the truck off, then restarted it. The transmission seemed to be shifting normally again, although I still had the two malfunction alerts flashing. I got back on the freeway and drove it the 18 miles I had left to get home. When I got home and shut if off, I waited about ten minutes and started it again. No alerts, and all of the dash lights and the drive mode switch were working. I took a screen shot of the Toyota App showing the alerts and let the truck sit overnight.
This morning, I started it up and immediately got the Hybrid System Malfunction alert. I took the chance of driving to the dealer near my work, thirty miles away in Glendale, CA. They took very detailed notes matching what I've written here. After the diagnostics, I received a call from the Service Advisor that the transmission had failed and they needed to replace it, along with the hybrid module and some other module (I'm waiting for something in writing. I'll update this when I hear back.) He said that the transmission took out the other modules when it failed. I have so far been told the same thing Trail Whale heard: 2 weeks to 2 months to get the parts and back on the road. I'll update when I have the ETA later today. Its especially disheartening when I've only put 2,200 miles on it. I haven't had it offroad yet, I haven't towed, I've been driving like an old man in Eco mode because I wanted to make sure I was carefully breaking in the engine.

I also asked if he had seen this in other land cruisers. He said this was the second LC (the first one was fixed within three weeks), but he's also seen three Tacoma trucks with the same issue. 08/27/2025 UPDATE - I got some fairly good news from the Service Advisor. Toyota has ok'd the warranty repair and have specified that the Dealer only use new parts, not re-manufactured. They'll be replacing the transmission, the hybrid module, and the torque converter (not another module as I thought I heard earlier). The hybrid module and the torque converter have already arrived at the dealership. The transmission will arrive by September 15th. Thank you to Blue Sky for suggesting getting a Toyota Extra Care Platinum Warranty comp'ed. I haven't done that yet, but I'll be talking to the Toyota Customer Experience Center saying I expect one simply as compensation for being out of my car for a month (or possible more). Plus, the now ever present worry that it could happen again.

@MIkel.C007 asked if Toyota tried to blame vehicle modification (wheels/tires) for the failures. They did not. However, the only modification I made was the addition of Method wheels 318 Machined / Clear coat, 18x8.5 with a 40mm offset. I just transferred my stock tires over to them because I didn't like the look of the satin black rims that came on it.

09/15/2025 UPDATE - When I last posted, the Service Advisor had been given a delivery date of mid-September for the transmission (he had already received the torque converter and hybrid control module). In todays conversation, I found out that the delivery date is now mid-October for the transmission. I'm working now with Toyota Customer Experience as my LC will be well over the thirty working days stipulation needed to qualify for a replacement or buyback. I love the car, but I don't feel like I can trust it now. Something tells me that the dealers are going to have a few used low-mileage LC's for sale over the next year or so. I hope a redesigned transmission is in the works. I'd love to buy another one if they get this fixed.

09/22/2025 UPDATE - Two days after filing a claim with the Toyota Customer Experience Center early last week, the dealership received the transmission. They worked on the LC for three days (including the weekend) and have returned it back to me. The root cause for the failure listed that a P281671 Pressure Control Solenoid "H" actuator stuck, and a P08BA71 Pressure Control Solenoid "L" actuator stuck. The solution was to replace the Torque Converter Assy., replace the Transmission Assy., and replace the Hybrid Module Assy. The LC seems to be driving better than when it was new, but I did feel a bit of a jerk on a downshift when I stopped today. Naturally, though, I'm a bit hypersensitive to the slightest bump or noise right now, so the jury is still out. The Customer Experience folks have acknowledged my claim requesting Toyota to repurchase my vehicle which has been forwarded to a local field office who may request to perform a vehicle inspection. The letter also suggests we use the National Center for Dispute Settlement program which is essentially an arbitration board, hoping I'll keep a lawyer out of this. I also believe that filing the claim fast tracked my transmission delivery, but I have no proof of that. I have told the Customer Experience team that I would keep the LC if they gave me a 7 year/100,000 mile Toyota Extra Care Platinum Warranty at no charge.
I'll keep everyone updated as events unfold.

Dang, sorry to hear. I got flashbacks reading your description of feeling like you got rear-ended. That was exactly my first thought as well when it happened to me.

I have put ~2500mi on the new transmission so far without any issues, but knowing that even the new one is still susceptible puts a damper on my confidence.

Exact. Same. Thing. Happened to me yesterday. I’m up in Michigan for work and it died on me in Flint. I could not get it out of limp mode and ended up parking at a gas station and calling Toyota Roadside Assistance. They towed me to a dealership in Grand Blanc. They got me a rental from Enterprise so I could finish my work trip. No word back from the dealership today. The repair dealership is 3 hours from home so more logistical gymnastics to follow. While in the service area at the dealership a technician told me that the same thing happened to a new hybrid Tacoma just after it drove off the lot that morning.
 
I've noticed my LC250 was a bit rough changing gears up to ~2500miles. It has since smoothed out.
I drove pretty slow during break-in period.

Lukin and JSD, any symptoms prior to that by any chance? Did you ever payed attention to the Tranny Temp gauge? I am just asking because a good number Tacomas (Hybrid), LC's and 4Runners 6Gen (hybrids) alike report to run hotter than what would be consider normal, but Toyota claims is normal for their tranny to run over 240F even at normal slow climbs of less than 5 miles on the asphalt. Mine has gotten all the way to 270F and no warning lights.

I remember hearing about Tacoma‘s with the same problem. I had hoped our trucks would be free from this issue. I guess not. And I’m just about to take off on a cross country trip with my girlfriend.

No, I'm sorry, I didn't watch the temp gauge, but, I will from now on. I didn't really have any other symptoms except when it was new. I had the same rough shifting early on that eventually smoothed out.

This transmission is used in the hybrid version, but the "normal" Tacoma uses a different transmission (If that helps any).

Yea.. I know.. I was following the Tacoma fiasco before buying Miss Daisy.. still sucks that Toyota can’t get their sh!t together and figure things out. This is so unlike them.
 
If it blossoms more and there is general concern for faulty transmissions in the hybrids, I would expect Toyota to issue a recall. But unfortunately, now that these are used in the Tacoma, 4Runner, and LC, it could just be a slight defect rate that we are dealing with now. I have 17k on the odometer and running smooth as butter. Have off-roaded, driven steep grades in 110+ degree heat, and still have learned a few tricks to use tow/haul mode if I'm concerned with heating issues. Sorry this happened to you, and hopefully you are compensated!

Thank you.. the amazing part to me is that it’s pretty much the exact same experience for everyone. Im really interested in seeing how these replacement transmissions perform. I bought a Toyota because of its reliability. I believe that Toyota will work hard to correct this issue. I just hate that I’mI going to be questioning for many, many, months if its going to happen again.
 
Will be interesting if these are software issues and they track it back to low voltage from discharged batteries. Has that MO

I had episodes of hard downshifts previously and what seemed like the transmission slipping as it dropped gears while decelerating. It seemed to show up periodically and then go away. No warning indicators came up but from this thread and similar online posts I had an idea of what was coming. No transmission temp warning lights and never running hot enough to cause concern. Ironically the last time the symptoms showed up was my last trip to Michigan about two months ago. Was hoping against hope that the issue had cleared up.
 
No lights on my rig but I am taking it in on 06-13-25 to have the trans looked at. Reporting harsh or delayed shifts, difficulty shifting gears. I will likely get "can't reproduce issue" but I do want it on file for when it does implode.
The second time I reported the same symptoms, they "could not reproduce" [eyeroll]. Mine finally threw the three codes last week when I was off-road, fortunately it drove ok. After taking it in a few days ago they reported codes relating to the transmission solenoid, and said it would likely get escalated since my prior reports matched the diagnostics.

That is normal behavior in all hybrids. When coasting downhill, the drivetrain will "engine brake" using regenerative braking first, until the hybrid battery is 100% full. Once the hybrid battery can't accept any more charge, the transmission will downshift and use the gasoline engine to provide engine braking. Switch the display to monitor hybrid battery charge level and you will see that the battery will get gradually more full while coasting downhill, and once all bars are lit, it will switch to engine braking. It only takes a couple of miles to completely fill the hybrid battery.

I've never once seen my battery at full, and I watch it. The closest it ever got was after climbing up to 13k... at the top! Engine braking in this thing is meager, I've wondered why they don't use the hybrid module for engine braking, and it seems like it would keep the battery topped off, as well. There should also be a 'charge-to-max' mode for when you are arriving at a campsite. Mine typically stays around 3-4 bars, sometimes 5, rarely any more, even after long descending long grades.
