Isn't the Grand Highlander front wheel drive based? Since it's cross over vs body on frame

It comes as both fwd and awd. For both, non-hybrid versions get the same engine and transmission LC has.

Hybrid versions either get a completely different engine or transmission, or the same engine in LC and a hybrid transmission.

Whatever makes you feel better but forums is a very small percentage of land cruiser owners, the fact there's even the amount of failures reported here is worrying

Considering this transmission is also in Tacoma, 4runner and Grand Highlander, the total sales volume is something lie 300-400k vehicles per year (plus Lexus versions). If there was a major design issue, we would have hundreds of failed transmissions.

It's not used in the grand highlander and it's only in the Tacoma and 4runner hybrid vehicles. They have also reported various issues as well.

The Highlander and LC do NOT have the same transmission.
The Highlander transmission is a transaxle, with input and output on the same (engine) side. The LC transmission is a straight-though transmission with input on the engine side and output on the other end. The internal gear arrangement is completely different.

Gear ratios are also different. LC transmission gear ratios are:
1st gear 4.41
2nd gear 2.8
3rd gear 1.95
4th gear 1.51
5th gear 1.27
6th gear 1.00
7th gear 0.79
8th gear 0.65
Reverse 3.64

Highlander gear ratios are:
1st gear 5.52
2nd gear 3.18
3rd gear 2.05
4th gear 1.49
5th gear 1.23
6th gear 1.00
7th gear 0.80
8th gear 0.67
Reverse 4.22

The only two things these transmissions have in common are that both are made by Aisin and both have 8 forward gears.

Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX has the same I4 turbo engine, mated to a 6-speed transmission.

It has really been helpful for me to read about LC owners who have had similar transmission problems at low mileage with their vehicles. The service advisor at my dealership said he had not heard of this issue before.
