Deep cycle agm battery replacement?

Even if you wanted to, the inverter shuts off when the engine isn't running or in what I call "camping mode". You could mount your charger under the hood and run the cord down to/through the lower grill. You could install a "Gland" to the area around the 12v battery on the under belly and run the male end of a short extension cord through that with a 6" pigtail. You could place a solar charger on the dash.
Cool ideas, thank you.

What is a "gland"?

What is a "gland"?
Used a lot on RV's to run antenna cables from the outside of the roof to the interior, sandwiching the cable in gaskets/sealers to make them waterproof. Amazon has them. There are a couple of different types that I have used, a round one that uses a retaining nut and a flat type that requires 2 - 4 mounting holes to be drilled to mount etc......

If you remove the Dvr's side, cargo trim panel, in the "D" pillar area, on the floor there are some large grommets. I've never removed the grommet to see if it a clear shot (inside to outside) but if it is, you might be able to sandwich a gland with washers and RTV (sealant) for a reversable extension cord pass through. If it's not a clean shot, a 1/2" (or what ever size you purchase) hole drilled into cargo floor would allow for the gland to be installed. If I were doing it, I'd buy a cheap, short 14gage extension cord and chop off the female end. Install the gland with a 4"-6" ping tail on the outside of the vehicle and buy a replacement female end at Lowes and adjust the length of the cord so it would fit nicely in the "Jack cradle" area. You could then leave the charger hooked to the battery and hidden behind the trim panel etc.........

^^ this is the one I have. Remove the screws inside each alligator clip to free the terminals to attach them to your battery's terminals permanently. There is a plug on the cables you detach when used this way, so terminals and pigtail stay near the battery, and you plug that terminal into the charger before initiating a charge cycle.

Mine has been in service for about seven years. I'll probably upgrade to a larger version of the Noco when rich & famous.

You can also buy additional cords, they just plug right in, instead of taking the alligators clips apart (you may need them for another battery in the future.)

You leave the vehicle running, the ac and plug will run off the hybrid battery, the engine will fire up when the battery needs to be charge. You either need to lock yourself in and disengaged the system 1hr system shut-off -or- if you are running a fridge or leaving a pet in the vehicle unattended, you disengage the shut off and lock the vehicle with the key.

I don't know why on Earth Toyota won't let you lock the running vehicle with the key fob (my F150 will), but then again, they have the weird remote start dance. At least the vehicle doesn't turn off when you open the door, like it used too.

If you decide to install a pass through cord, a grill cord or shut the hood/rear hatch on the cord........... it's a very good idea to drape the extension cord over the dvr's side rear view mirror to remind you to disconnect the extension cord before driving off (please don't ask why I KNOW this is a good idea) 😜

Note that the LC owners manual specifically states that you should not use a charger with more than 5 amps -- it says that doing so may cause the battery to explode...

I am thinking that would apply to the OEM battery rather than an AGM upgrade.

Absolutely. A couple of battery shops local to me carry the complete line of Noco accessories. I am a single (running) vehicle owner at the moment, but one day I'll need a bigger charger possibly with two charging ports. Noco's Pro line includes chargers that can charge multiple batteries at once.

Awesome, thank you so much!

Curiosity got the best of me, so I pulled the trays/access panel and looked. It does not appear to be any grommets once removed would provide a pass through. Of the three I removed, it appears that they were for spraying a rust prohibitor in the voids at the factory. There is an easily accessible flat spot under the lower, dvr's side storage tray that might be a good spot. My plan is to either drill a hole in one of the voids in the lower tray (bigger than the gland) then a smaller hole (gland sized) through the floor and secure the gland in the floor but allow the tray to be removed (well as far as the cord will allow) or drill a hole on the floor under one of the lower trays positive voids and just tuck the female end loosely at the base of the battery. It's on my to-do list, but since I installed the solar charger, I might not ever need to use the trickle charger again, so that project got moved to the bottom of my list.......LOL

Thanks so much. If you do decide to move ahead with that project please consider documenting the project via pictures. I'm sure that would be so helpful to me and many. Thanks for checking that area.

For sure, just about anything I have fab'd or modified, I've posted on my build page. I will answer anything sent privately using the "start conversation" feature. It helps avoid the trolls that inhabit this forum 😜

Thanks so much! I love your build page. I follow it and look at it often. It's so helpful.

So what's the consensus here? Will the LC charge an AGM battery to a healthy level?

I know on my GX460 I had to add a voltage booster.

What were the symptoms on your GX460? Recently installed an AGM in our '21 Highlander Hybrid, and no issues after several months.

“Charge” and “bring to an optimal state of charge” are two different things. An AGM replacement starting battery and an AGM Deep Cycle Battery are also two different things.

If you are talking about the latter, you’ll find the voltage required to bring one to an optimal state of charge varies amongst manufacturers and battery models, and many of the higher end batteries are capable of a resting voltage at full charge that is greater than most electrical systems are capable of charging it to. To maintain optimal state of charge and reach full service life, batteries in this category benefit from being topped off regularly with an AGM compatible charger. Running a high performance AGM Deep Cycle at partial state of charge for long periods of time reduces its service life.

If you want definitive answers, ask about a specific battery- they usually have information buried in the specs that is helpful. Some time spent with a digital multimeter clipped onto the battery’s posts as you put the Land Cruiser through its paces would be revealing as well.

I've had zero issues with my AGM keeping a charge, every time I've checked during day to day usage it's been right at 13.9 volts. Recently during an extended period with the doors open (aprox 24hrs total) and testing my curtesy /Pod light modification, my AGM battery went flat, requiring 20 min on a trickle charger in order to get the ICE to fire up. I should have put it on trickle when I started the project, but didn't.

Which prompted me to fast forward my extension cord pass through mod. Basically I'm installing a very short, waterproof extension cord pass through. on the interior, it's located next to the 12v battery and on the exterior, just in front of the rear bumper. It's going to allow me a semi-permanent trickle charger install where all I need to do is plug in an extension cord at the rear bumper when working on the LC for extended periods with the doors open (which happens a lot) an added benefit will be I no longer will have to pinch my 200a solar panel cord with the door. When it's finished, I'll make a separate post with my results.

(edit) Project complete....

I recently also ran into a dead battery problem while camping. After reading through this thread, I don’t think an AGM battery is for me as I don’t want to deal with having to charge it to keep it at an optimum level. (Yes I’m lazy and not that technically savvy)

Any other battery solutions that are more or less plug and play without needing additional maintenance? Having your battery die just while loading up the truck is kind of a buzz kill.

That doesn’t seam normal..🤔
It's not normal for a regular (non-electrified) car with a regular (big) battery... Unfortunately, with the LC, I'm not at all surprised that his battery died while loading the car, the small battery drains VERY quickly.

And the electrical "overhead" with this car is incredible! Yesterday I charged my 12V Optima AGM battery (I had the hybrid system on for 25 min), and after that I was showing 94% charge at 12.6V (it was 60% at 12.33V before the recharge). Now, after the car sat undisturbed over night, I'm at 69% and 12.42V. If I had done anything so foolish as to open the liftgate or any of the doors, the drop would have been much greater! I think this is crazy!!!

And if your LC has the optional liftgate lights and/or the optional door sill lights, these very bright lights, which have no automatic timed turn-off, will greatly accelerate the 12V battery drain...

Incidentally, I've no idea how the LC recharges the 12V battery so quickly... My 5 amp Noco wall charger (in AGM mode) would have spent several hours accomplishing the same thing that my car (ostensibly) did in less than a half hour.
