Fuel Tank options for Land Cruiser 250/ GX550

Those guys love it when people will either pay them, or do their product's research and development for free!
Yes, sure I'll help them with document that are available on the web. Also I advise them I will not buy a fuel tank without any certification other than it should not leak.

For example I contacted a US manufactuer and ask politiely some basic technical data. IFS half shaft were described as "These axles are designed & built to vastly exceed the strength & durability of stock Toyota Land Cruiser IFS axles" and I asked what angle deviation those axle may reach. The response was "As far as angular improvement i don't have access to any data i also feel like if any data was available it would be on my website listed."

He just zip all my expectations about his product, I prefer the Chinese reponsiveness at least the guy overthere know what he is doing. It's just a question of time to get nice strudy and durable half safts from China.

Or the Chinese guys are better at telling you what you want to hear. I’ve seen this approach before, and there’s a reason they don’t have a lot of similar aftermarket products on the US market. The Chinese auto industry is the largest in the world now, you’re correct there’s no reason they can’t make good products if they wanted to.

Has anyone been able to switched the tank yet??
I only have a 150 mile range pulling small rv. Sux.

Over at mud, it seems like the fk tank worked for a guy with the new LX.

My 300 GR-S HEV is the same tank size as the American 250, 68L. I had to make 3 stops from Dubai to Riyadh since we have long stretches without stations. The GR-S non-HEV has a main and sub, 80+30, but I bought the HEV so this is where I am at. I somehow missed this key piece of information, along with the POS 3rd row configuration due to hybrid battery (see pics). 3rd row situation is another topic, for now I am just living with it.

That said, the 300 VX HEV and VX-R HEV, sold in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries somehow comes with 98L tank size. Toyota's parts shop said the OEM indicates it is a single tank, but I haven't seen under it yet (besides trying to get a look at the dealership when they had one on the floor). For trips to the Empty Quarter and elsewhere, fuel range is critical.

Australia will launch the 300 GR-S HEV in March 2026 with petrol versus the usual diesel in Australia. Hence, most aftermarket fuel tank modifications have been for diesel only.

I hope either the current VX/VX-R HEV tank (assuming it is 1 main tank) fits mine, and then I would get OEM VX tank to swap with mine, or that Australia comes up with something that we can order to the GCC. In the meantime, I have the jerry can which just arrived, in time for desert trips this winter. Just gotta tie it down somehow.

I have called shops in Saudi, Qatar and UAE. They all said I would be the first to add an aux tank or swap with the VX tank. Since dealerships find any modifications to void the warranty for anything, at least out here, I must have patience and wait; in parallel, pray my wife doesn't kill me first for talking nonstop about it 😆

The introduced the Additional Sub Tank(30L) capacity in the Middle East. The previous year Prado model had the subtank behind the rear wheel axle and Spare tire at the Tail Gate door mounted
IMO, the area outlined by the red circle will be the area of interference. I don't know for sure as I'm not familiar withe tank you are referring to. But in the US variant has suspension mounts in that area, preventing the larger GX550 tank from a direct bolt up.

I am very interested with your findings.

Excellent thank you for information! Would love part numbers if you can share. Thank you again .

Nice Jerry can set up! Could you make to swing down?

Yes. Geographically, culturally, and politically.

For whatever reason the western half of the continent and the people residing there have elected to live in totalitarian nanny states rather than enjoying more individual freedoms. The European love for excessive regulations is perplexing to me.

Unfortunately native born populations there continue to decline, and the entire continent becomes less and less relevant to the rest of the world every passing year. Maybe the next residents will have a different view of things… at the present moment and trajectory it certainly appears the future residents of Western Europe will a have very very different view of things. Certainly not a change for the better.
Actually, that’s not at really accurate. Switzerland isn’t part of the EU, so it controls its own borders and immigration policies. It’s one of the most independent countries in Europe or anywhere else. Military service is mandatory. It’s citizens regularly vote on immigration issues through referendums. They’ve passed very strict measures to restrict migration.

While roughly a quarter of the population is foreign-born, most are skilled workers from neighboring European countries, not part of any mass immigration wave. Switzerland manages entry through strict quotas and has some of the toughest asylum rules in the Western world. Far easier to emigrate to US than Switzerland.

So yes, Switzerland is absolutely part of Europe geographically, but politically and economically, it operates on its own terms

Are those pics all of your vehicle? yes shame about the 3rd row. I have PM you
I fond it hard to believe 98lt is one tank, the main tank on the 200 series was only 93lt, I cant see any 300 or 250 having a 98lt main tank when everywhere else gets an 80lt main tank!

Yup all of my car from different angles. I agree, 98lt just doesn't make sense. I will swing by another Toyota parts store this weekend to double check, and share OEM numbers here. Will respond to your PM 👍🏼

Thanks for suggesting this, I don't know why my brain has gone straight to Kaymar rear bar 😅 versus something simple and modular like this, plus more affordable and accessible in Riyadh.

I spent some time this morning underneath my LC.
Couple of takaways:

-while these is no telling until the new tank arrives whether it will truly fit, I will say the underside looks exactly the same as the test vehicle, near as I can tell and without removing anything. The exhaust routing, frame, driveline, etc are as expected visually identical. This is totally not surprising given the Chinese spec is the same dimensions and drivetrain and fuel tank capacity as the US spec and this is a global vehicle platform.

-the hoses and lines and wires appear to be in the right places, again not surprising given they generally lead to the top of the tank because many of them mount to the fuel pump and evap canister, so they can’t be far away or really even reconfigured if the system is using the same pump. Which it is.

-I was wondering where the extra tank size comes from-someone asked if the tank hangs lower because of the size and the answer Is I don’t think so. It appears in the photos to hang flush with the bottom of the frame. Which is +/- the same as the OEM tank.
So where does the extra capacity come from?
Visual inspection says it is longer, particular on the front end of the vehicle. There are several inches (3-4?) on the front end where the tank is longer and there is space for it. Height is also a possibility as there is space above the OEM tank- I could reach my hand up and over the tank no sweat. And dimensionally the OEM tank is relatively tubular vs the new one is squared, adding some capacity. And finally the OEM tank is molded and I believe from looking at it that the baffling and structural reinforcement is molded into the tank- but this creates sizable valleys all over the tank (think give or take 1-2” deep and running all over the tank. The new one is smooth leading to more capacity and presumably uses welded metal baffles which are probably very thin. Add it up and I guess it’s 11 gallons extra.

Anyways, no major obvious red flags from initial inspection. Will have to wait 45 days to actually take it apart and try to fit it.
Are you still waiting for your tank to arrive?

Being under warrantee. Leaning toward outboard solutions. One is a bracket mount for hitch type carriers,

Voiding my warrantee is not a options. Do agree the stock fuel tank is too small.
