29gal Main Fuel Tank Install

You just need to find a good smog guy. There's a fellow in Torrance that may or may not speak English, but he gets your smog done really fast and doesn't seem to interested in doing anything but the absolute bare minimum. He sure as hell isn't going to go crawling around under your vehicle to 'check things out.' I have to assume these people exist in most CA towns. Having the emissions in check so the computer says you're good would seemingly be the only potential stumbling block and it seems like that's a non issue. Good luck.

I installed mine this weekend. Fortunately, I had some help which made it easier and faster. Below is my take on this without repeating anything already covered.

To make it easier, I recommend removing the rear seat and disconnecting the electrical connecters thru the access hole. The access cover is just glued and you’ll have to tape or glue it back.

I have some issues with the this kit but they’re minor gripes. Overall, the tank and hardware seem well built.

Durability? Only time will tell.

Filled 2.6 gal from a gas can. Started it up, low fuel light and message came on. Filled a hair over 25 gal to first click at the gas station. Total capacity 27.6 gal. And the low fuel light and message are at least at 2.6 gal.

Are you guys rinsing out the inside of the tank (with gas) to remove possible mfg debris prior to install?

It had some condensation inside but I didn’t notice any reason for concern. With the baffling, I could not inspect the inside thoroughly. From what I could see (pictured) I felt good with it.

The strap bolt threads are coarser than the frame side (factory), they could have just matched the factory thread pitch.

The double sided tape on the soft shims was not good.

I think the straps could have been pinned instead of bolted on the center side, just like the factory tank.

The brackets were a bit twisted/distorted making it harder to line up, that could he a shipping issue though.

Has anyone in the US even received one of these tanks from China yet?
I received mine about two weeks ago and got the install done myself/solo with no lift in about 3.5 hours? I have a lift and larger tires and just needed to lift the back end about another 4". Really straight forward, FK's install video was very helpful, the only thing I would say is bring your patience when unhooking everything at the back/top of the tank as well as reconnecting.

I would also second other's comments regarding weld and finish quality as well as supplied kitting/parts quality which appears to be at OEM level......

Has anyone installed the auxiliary version from FK? Wondering how the install and day to day performance is.

I like the auxiliary version for the same reason EOD Guy mentioned. I also do not have the space around my house to place my stock tank.

FK 29-gal Main Tank vs FK 16-gal Aux Tank – Gauge, DTE, and Install Questions

I’m trying to decide between the FK 29-gallon replacement main tank and the FK ~16-gallon auxiliary tank (non–spare delete), and wanted to sanity check my understanding with those who have installed either.

My understanding:
29-gallon main tank
  • Uses OEM pump/sender
  • Gauge should behave mostly like stock, but may stay “full” longer and be less linear
  • Low fuel light likely comes on early (with ~4–5 gallons still in the tank)
  • DTE behaves mostly normal but not perfectly calibrated to the larger capacity
  • Install seems more straightforward (drop/replace tank, transfer components)

16-gallon aux tank
  • Main tank behaves normally at first, then aux transfers after a threshold
  • Gauge drops normally, then may level off or even bump slightly during transfer
  • DTE may increase mid-drive when fuel transfers
  • Low fuel light behavior remains consistent with stock (since ECU only sees main tank)
  • Install appears more involved (plumbing, siphon system, pump mod, routing, etc.)

Where I’m struggling:
  • It seems like the aux setup has “weirdness” at the top/middle of the tank, while the main tank has “weirdness” at the bottom (early fuel light / reserve).
  • I’m trying to decide which is less annoying long-term.

Questions for those running either:
  1. How accurate/trustworthy is your gauge and DTE in real-world use?
  2. On the 29-gal tank, how early does the low fuel light actually come on, and how do you manage it?
  3. On the aux setup, is the transfer behavior noticeable or just something you stop thinking about?
  4. Any install headaches or things you’d do differently?
 
I have the aux tank and am only on first tank, but I think I’m in the weirdness zone right now. It keeps bouncing back and forth between full and somewhere between 165-190 MTE. It’s maybe bounced back and forth 3-4 times in the past two days. I’m hoping that at some threshold the bouncing stops so that going forward I can always know that if it shows less than X then I don’t have any aux reserve. Another option is to start tracking “Trip A” each time I refuel but that seems a bit annoying (major first world problem I know) too.

Withe the 16gal Aux tank you have to replace the exhaust or heavily modify.

I'm thinking but don't know, the syphon pump is nothing more than a one-way check valve. In my thought process..... the aux tank would syphon fuel into the main tank and the physical level of the liquid would be about even in both tanks (maybe slightly higher in the main tank) therefore the gauge level and DTE would constantly be updating until the aux tank can no longer transfer fuel into the main. This is a SWAG as I've not seen how everything hooks up.
