Is towing with the 250 really that bad?

Thanks for the replies. Being Australian, the engine will be the turbo diesel and not the US petrol hybrid so her is in oz the 250 has a documented towing capacity of 3.5t and a payload of about 590kg, so on paper it looks fine. The vans we are looking at are about 2.6t loaded and a tow ball weight about 190kg with a length of about 20ft. They are off-road vans hence a bit heavier than the norm for their size.

Thinking I might have to push to the LC300, even though I think the 250 would be easier to live with as an everyday car when not on the road towing a van.

You just said the key point here. It's the diesel and capacity is 7000lbs. I would think no problem at all, even without many mods. Our Hybrid unit can tow 6000lbs so you were getting up there.

We are looking to go teardrop (Camp-Inn Raindrop) as well… just feels more like camping than having a travel trailer. Besides, I haven’t seen anyone demonstrate proper towing mirrors for the LC yet.
I have a 17 foot teardrop”. It’s not awful, but only get 10 mph and gas tank is already small.

Anyone worry about the center diff when towing? While unlocked obviously, but seems like I can feel it continuously “working” at highway cruising speed. Almost like can’t decide how much power to send to the front.

Would a part time 4 wheel system be better for towing?

I was getting 18-19 on Interstate 80 with my Camp-Inn 560 Ultra. Definitely sucks up the gas on the hilly coastal roads. Still, I’m very satisfied with the performance. I think we have our set up dialed in now.

Howdy all,

I am deep into the investigation for a new 4wd that we will use to eventually take the big lap around Australia with the wife. I really like the new Prado Altitude, but the mountain of negative reports on its true towing capabilities make me hesitant. We have the original Ford Everest now which has given us 9 good years of service so was initially looking at the Everest Tremor due to the off road readiness, factory (ARB) accessories and V6. After driving the Prado 250 though, now would prefer to get it. I keep getting the 300 series suggested t me but that is quite a $ jump for similar specs,

The vans we are looking at are off-road, single axle, hard tops which are about 2.5t with a tow ball weight of 180-200kgs. Would get the car prepped with amongst the usual list, suspension upgrade with about a. 40mm lift, 250kg springs front and rear, and rear air bags to help with towing, so think it should be ok.

Is the 250 good for what I am looking at, or should I be looking at alternatives such as back to the v6 Everest or up to a 2nd hand 300 series?

Thanks for the help 😀
Hi Davlloyd,
I picked up my 2024 Altitude in December and love it. We’ve been travelling around far north QLD for last 3 months and done over 9000ks towing a 24 model Crusader single axle 2500 kg atm ( fully loaded) & approx 200ball weight. I can’t fault it, love it.
I use tow haul mode and get around 15 to 17 L/100. I only have air bags in rear springs.
We’ve been through mountain ranges around cairns, Toowoomba, Atherton and never a problem.
I too looked at Ford Everest tremor (v6 with 80ltr tank) great car BUT not a Toyota. I ordered a GXL but didn’t like the boot so cancelled order then went back to ford then went back to Prado Altitude.
There is a lot more after market products for Prado 250 available now, make sure you check out
Razed products (rear floor)
TLR (antenna brackets/ tow plug brackets)
Pirate camp (uhf console brackets)

If I bought another Prado again I would like the VX model (gives you another $9k to play with) same mods but no sway bar release.
I would remove rear seats (razed products false floor) add 30ltr draw fridge and single draw.
Good luck with your Choice.

18-19?! I don't think anyone on here gets that while NOT towing........

Yeah, seriously, this thing only gets 11 mph on the freeway with trailer. That’s flat Texas coastal plains to.
Switched to Ko3 but still original size, the stupid FE rack cost me at least 1 mph, but it’s hard to imagine getting 17 miles a gallon pulling 2.5k
I barely get that driving 70 down the freeway.

Diesel versus the US hybrid version are Apple to oranges for towing so, probably need to qualify this request for similar model comparisons.

Without trailer, doing 65-70, we get about 21.

I’m on 20” wheels that came w/ LC/LC premium trim. No mods. I’m told if I got rid of roof rack I’d see another 2 mpg but haven’t tried that yet.

I just took Miss Daisy’s First Edition air brake/noise generator roof rack off yesterday. Drove bout 200 miles yesterday (Wednesday) on mostly hilly mountainous highways… ~26.9 mpg, @45, 55, and 60 mph (avoiding interstate highways) Miss Daisy was much quieter. Difficult to tell what contribution the FE roof rack delete will make in the MPG department, until I get to the flat lands driving across the USA.

I had to synthetic clay the entire roof twice, as it felt like 300 grit sandpaper from not being adequately washed for the last 13+ months. Griots 3 in 1 ceramic wax was then applied. She’s very slippery now.

Worked just fine with a mildly loaded Uhaill 5x8 beyond the box being an obvious air brake. You could easily forget it was behind you. VERY STABLE. If you tow weekly or monthly , better choices. If its a seasonal boat move, or in my case a furniture move, perfectly adequate. Uhaul was great to work with.....

Hey mate, there have been a couple of tests between LC 300 & 250 towing. The 250 actually outperformed the 300 in a couple of tests and one I remember was keeping a constant speed going up a range, it surprised me. I think that was on one of Ronny Dahl’s tests on YouTube.

My Bean is 14 feet and about 2000 lbs. Pulling it up and over the Rockies was very nice compared to the Jeep Gladiator it replaced. The Jeep would whine and get very loud in 4th pulling the same trailer. This one just glided without any noticeable effort. Smaller trailer agreed, and that is perhaps the key. View attachment 46072
How do you like the trailer?

Towed a 2000 lb trailer today, with maybe around 1000 lb of cargo. This was a big enough load to really feel the torque this hybrid powertrain has. It had surge brakes, and I would really like to try something with electronic brakes so that I can use the integrated controller.

How many MPG did your fuel economy drop?

How many MPG did your fuel economy drop?
I wasn’t paying too much attention, but I recall my trip economy when turning off the vehicle was around 14-15 MPG. A significant drop, but that includes cold starts and a bunch of idling. Without the trailer, with winter conditions & tires, I usually average around 20-21 MPG. In the summer, on highway tires, I usually average around 24-25 MPG.

I tow about 5,000 pounds, wheels and tires at 91, pounds vs stock around 60+/-, and a roof rack and I’m around 8-9 mph. Needless to say I reached out to Mike at FK and have their 29gal main tank on the way.

How do you like the trailer?
We love the trailer, once you are in it is very cozy. Getting in for a seventy year old is not always easy but wind, rain, lighting and noisy neighbors are all a bit easier to take. It also goes where ever you pull it.

Does he do the stupid YouTuber mouth agape face the whole video?
Lil and Jake are complete tools.

I know this thread is old, but the problem here is that no one in the US can help answer your question. I would barely want to tow that weight trailer with our drivetrain, though if you’re not doing a ton of high-speed freeway driving, might not matter quite so much.
