TL;DR
Yesterday, I drove down to a Costco just north of Marietta, Ga to have a set of 5 ‘Michelin X Ice’ tires installed. The Michelin X Ice tires were awesome on my Subaru when I lived in Idaho. I ordered them a week or so earlier, and my daughter, who lives in Marietta, went over and paid for them, to get them on their way to the Costco. I then Zelle’s her some money, paying her back.
The guy at the Costco tire desk told me that 265/70 R18’s were unobtanium, and the only tires that he could order for me were 255/70 R18’s. Obviously a little less height to the tires, which didn’t bother me, for the limited use that these would see, moving forward. And Miss Daisy might even get better fuel economy with the smaller, lighter tires.
I am driving up to Boston in a couple of weeks to pick up a custom built rocking chair that will be a gift for my daughter and her family, and she might go with me. So I didn’t want to take any chances with her safety.
Several months ago on my/our trip to see the Redwoods, I had my OEM Michelin LTX’s siped at a Les Schwab tire dealership when we were passing through Idaho. Tire siping had worked very well for me back in 2007, on my 2006 Avalanche OEM Goodyear Wranglers, which we took to the ski slopes many times.
After ordering the Michelin X Ice tires a few weeks ago, I took my GF out to supper one night, on the siped OEM Michelin LTX tires. There was 5-6” of ice everywhere. When we got back to the house, I stopped after pulling off the road, disconnected the sway bar, locked the center differential, and set the MTS knob to deep snow. Then I eased Miss Daisy off of the paved driveway, across an 18” drainage ditch, and aimed her up the 10 to 15 degree sloped front yard, over the snow and ice covered grass. Miss Daisy never slipped a wheel, just crawled up the 1/4 mile hill (with a 350 foot increase in elevation) to the house. So, the siped LTX tires worked GREAT!! Maybe I didn’t need the Michelin X Ice tires, but I couldn’t take a chance with my Daughter, and/or GF on the trip to Boston.
They are a very quiet tire, just like when they were on my Subaru out in Idaho, and have a great ride. I haven’t had them on ice yet, but that may happen on our rode trip north.
