I’m not a fan at all of the sounds the T24A makes with a Cold Air Intake, or the new snorkel. The exhaust can be improved on the LC a bit deeper with cat back or resonator delete, but the CAI sounds are a no-go.
I’d still like to improve things & wanted to run this by some of you for input.

  • Plan to keep the stock OE abs air filter housing
  • Use my K&N flat air filter
  • install HPS MAP silicone air intake hose
  • Add new SXTH Turbo inlet

I just want to smooth the airflow going into the turbo, without the noise of a CAI. The factory air filter housing is actually a decent functional cold air intake drawing air in from outside the engine compartment from the inner fender. Add a K&N flat filter & air flow improves slightly. HPS dyno’d just their silicone air intake hose & it provided 9HP on a Tacoma. No dyno testing yet on the new SXTH turbo inlet, but it’s much smoother & doesn’t choke down like the stock unit. So overall this homologation nmight be 0HP, or optimists might be +10-12HP.

SXTH hasn’t officially released the turbo inlet as of 09/26. I do have the HPS intake hose ordered, so next weekend I’m a test pilot from that point & will at least try part of this out - total cost would be around $350 for all the parts. I do like that it can be all black in color & be somewhat under the radar, although the intake hose can also be red or blue should you choose.

Appreciate any feedback.

This what finished it would look like.

Two things...
1. I would choose a dry flow filter replacement as opposed to the oiled K&N.
2. I believe the stock turbo inlet has a dampener to quiet things down. Replacing it may increase sound levels which is counter to what you are trying to achieve. I may be wrong about the dampener but I seem to remeber reading that somewhere.

Thank you. Took your comment & there is a remark on another turbo inlet from AFE that specifically states it removes the resonator compared to the stock inlet. That may take the turbo inlet off as an option for me. I’m still not sure of the exact inlet diameter of either the HPS or Burger inlet hose, so I’ll measure when the HPS arrives.
Other new info:
  • AFE makes a turbo inlet
  • Banks is working on one
  • Burger makes an inlet hose for $59, not sure it’s the quality of the HPS - which on other projects I found high quality.

On a side note, I had the aFe Magnum FLOW Pro DRY S Air Filter on my LC before I installed the SXTH element intake. It seemed to work well. Now its just sitting in my old parts box. Used it for less than 2 years but it didn't cause any issues.

I originally had no intentions of replacing the stock air box. However, when I decided t go with the SXTH intercooler and charge pipes, I decided the intake was also a good option. It's definitely louder, but not obnoxiously loud. I also installed the TRD performance exhaust. That helped out with making the LC sound a little less like a sewing machine.

I think you can be almost guaranteed any intake mods will increase the sound level because that’s what 99% of customers will want.

I wouldn’t use a K&N filter, I’m in the woods frequently though. It’s well known K&N lets more particles in. Probably not as bad for city folk. I usually keep vehicles for over 100,000 miles so I tend to keep them stock. Screwing with intake or exhaust is just asking for trouble. JMO.
