LC250 Intake Which perform better

Has anybody tried:
1) installing the OEM Trailhunter airbox on their LC and did it help with the improvement in sound?
2) installing the OEM Trailhunter airbox on their LC with the OEM Snorkel/raised air intake and did that improve the sound?

Random unhelpful anecdote, but my buddy has a Trailhunter Tacoma and his wife is not a fan of the turbo noise from the snorkel right next to the passenger window.

A couple of weeks ago I dipped in a water crossing and hit a huge puddle and the front side of the car where the intake is pretty much went about 2/3 of the way in the mud.

The mud destroyed the headlight as it started leaking water inside it so I cleaned everything out and dealership replaced the headlight under warranty.

After I got the car back from the shop I started having rough idling at stop lights and I opened up the air intake box and it looked pretty much trashed. No lights or warnings came on. I did use some Lucas fuel injector cleaner but I would think the air intake assembly needs replacing.

I want to replace the assembly but don't want to void the warranty because if something else goes wrong with the intermittent rough idling it will be a huge cost.

At the same time if the air came in from somewhere other than the fenders that would be the upgrade I would want to avoid low water crossing and mud getting in the air intake from the fender.

The 6th gen 4runner seems to be pulling air from the top and I wish the LC would do something like that.

At the very least I was going to replace the air filter and take out the assembly and clean it all out.

Anyway I don't know where I'm going with this but maybe some of you have some thoughts.

I used the K&N and it gave me a lot of problems — it was super loud, not in a good way. I switched to the aFe Power and it’s been awesome. No issues at all, and instead of harsh noise, you can actually hear the turbo spool nicely. With the K&N, some warning lights even came on and the installation was a pain. On the other hand, the aFe Power was super easy to install — took me less than 30 minutes.

I'm also running the AFE and am happy with it. Retains the OEM MAF like most do, still uses the OEM port for cold air, and even retains the factory diaper pad thingy........ Would be really hard for a dealer to gripe about it.
 
I put a K&N intake on my Tahoe and took it out two days later. That’s not the kind of noise I wanted more of.
 
I am considering replacing the current OEM intake. Its really bad on hot weather conditions. And want to know from the peers which brand is suggested and why.
1. K&N (Cold Air Intake System - High-flow Air Filter, Roto-mold Tube - TOYOTA TACOMA L4-2.4L TURBO F/L
or
2. AFE - Momentum GT Air Intake System

Any real difference in terms of performance
Out of curiosity, how did you determine your OEM intake is really bad during hot weather conditions? Were you measuring intake air temps using an OBD scanner type tool? There is definitely validity if you're seeing intake temps outside of expected normal operating conditions.

However, a lot of aftermarket air intake systems have been tested lose power in most conditions, or in best case scenario shift the engine's power curve to the right, meaning less torque and power down low, but getting more at high rpm. This is especially true for a lot of small displacement Japanese cars where the OEM intake is already optimized from the factory.

Since this is also a factory turbo engine and I assume we have a front mount intercooler, that could have a greater effect on the recorded intake temps especially if our MAP/MAF sensor is after it which it should be. Do you have anything that might be blocking the intercooler like dirt, mud, or aftermarket accessories?
 
Well my two cents , being working on Aircraft Engines for more than 30 years , Dubai or call it Middle East. Absolutely it is dry all year around with blazing heat in Apr-Nov. soars upto 113'F and can spike upto 121F. So here is what I have understood about that OEM intake on the 2024 LC250 Turbo . It’s solid for what it’s designed to do—balance efficiency, keep things quiet, and work decently in all kinds of conditions. But it’s not perfect for extreme heat. The intake sits in the engine bay, which turns into a furnace when it’s hot out, especially with that turbo setup. The air filter box and intake pipes soak up all that heat (we call this “heat soak”), and that warms up the air going into the engine even more. Hotter air, less oxygen, less power, you get the picture.
The good news? The LC250’s engine management system is always looking out for you. It’s programmed to prioritize keeping the engine safe over squeezing out every last bit of performance. That’s why, in blazing heat, you might notice the car feeling a bit less lively. It’s just doing its job to protect itself.

Yes LC250’s brain (the ECU) is smart enough to notice this and tweaks the air-fuel mix to avoid trouble, like detonation, which is basically uncontrolled combustion that can wreck your engine. To keep things safe, it dials back the ignition timing and often pumps in a bit more fuel, creating a “richer” mix. Problem is, this robs you of some power and efficiency, so the car doesn’t feel as peppy at hot weather conditions.
I will def lean towards the Cold Air intake, But I need real values to determine what is the best. SXTH currently is on top of that list. Will wait to see how this perform in real world than fake theories stunts by marketing PRs.
The front is absolutely clean, no obstacles for blocking the Air flow.
Waiting for the SXTH Turbo Intercooler launch in OCT for LC250. Should make a difference I believe.

The K&N is also a hot air intake since it pulls air in under the hood. Its not double filtered it has a second intake in the lid with filter media and one in the front since it can be run on the Taco and the fender vent. If you leave the Taco port open it’s a really huge hot air intake and the top is likely never pulling air. Only air that would enter through the lid would be doubled filtered.

AFE is the only aftermarket I’m aware of that is the same as factory and is still a true cold air intake. Still not worth the bones to me, but if I had to pick one AFE would be it with the dry filter and get a sock for it when off-road in the dust.

I have a hard time believing any of them produce what the dyno results show especially the K&N just too much air let in, which will lean the mixture and cause the ECU to pull timing to prevent detonation.

If one must a simple drop in would be the most wallet friendly and least likely to cause a loss in power/torque.

All will let more dirt into the engine even if the filter media is the same as OEM due to increased flow for the larger surface area. More air in means more dirt in no way around it due to space constraints.

You can see the results of this in UOA tests, is the juice worth the squeeze?

Not to mention the sound is cool short term but gets old real quick.

It's a turbocharged vehicle. The air is cooled prior to entering the engine. Hot air vs cold air would really only be for a NA vehicle. A "cold air" intake truly doesn't exist.
 
Always stay away from plastic intakes and/or intake systems that enclose a filter within a box. Especially a plastic box. These will often LOSE power. You want silicone and/or carbon fiber intake tubes at least. Otherwise you're just dressing up the engine bay with something that you think looks nice.

I've used all the aftermarket intake systems on the market, and the best is SXT Generation. I recommend it 100%. The sound and performance are amazing. I love it!

I'm only see posts of post install photos. How are you measuring performance?
A tingle in the nads, I would guess. These rarely have a meaningful performance boost.

Just saw that video. Is that the noise from inside the cabin 😳?
 
I didn't put the microphone inside the engine, but you can hear it loudly inside and it feels like you have more power.
 
Well it is certainly loud!
