LC Trim base level stereo

Thank you! I may do the same as you.

I put sound deadening in my doors recently and it does improve the speaker sound IMO. The door speakers feel REALLY cheap when you handle them. But I was impressed how much better they sound with some CLD applied behind them.

Are you concerned about having to use some kind of extension bracket to make the JL 350s fit? That seems like a big detractor that would affect the sound quality.

I have a 1958 too and am just looking for some simple upgrades without diving too deep.
You won’t get the screws through both holes on the JL, but the rim/washer of the screw will catch the edge of the speaker tab/bracket. The speaker doesn’t move.

Thanks for the comment. For clarification, did you add a small metal plate on one side to extend the mounting bracket? I read a post with pictures that illustrated the need to add a short metal extension to one side.

No. As I said, the wide head of the bolt will catch on the edge of the tab. Don't overthink it.

Got it! I didn’t know the tabs fit between the two mounting bolts like that. Another person added a small metal plate on one side to mount the speaker. A washer with the OEM bolt is a much simpler solution. I agree, it looks very secure. Do you own a 1958? If so, how do the C2 350’s sound. I’m thinking about upgrading the dashboard speakers and holding off on the door speakers. I’m a bit concerned about trying to drive something like the JL Audio C2 650’s. Thoughts?

Did you have any problems using the Crutchfield wiring harness? Some people have discovered the polarity was reversed on their vehicle. I’m not sure if this is the norm…

I didn't use a washer, those are the stock bolts.

I have a Base, 10spkr, this is the Base Stereo thread. I've covered the C2 350 and the Metra in this thread, as have others.

I don't know about the C2 650 in the 1958, I am not familiar with the 1958, and most of my technical knowledge comes from Chancellor's research, what others have tried, and the rest comes from trying different dash speakers.

Thank you. I’ve read Chancellor’s thread and several others. Best I can tell, the 1958 with the 6 speaker system is unique. Toyota wired the dashboard and front door speakers in parallel. This drops the ohms to 2.6 with all OEM speakers. I’m waiting on Toyota to provide me information on the 1958 system. Toyota responded to my initial request but provided detailed information on a 2020 Rav 4.

Believe it or not, we have 8 ohm dashboard speakers and 4 ohm door speakers. I’m glad I read your post regarding the use of the OEM mounting bolts. You are right, it is simple and clean install. Thanks again!

I was kinda hoping you’d take the dive and purchase those C2 350s and experiment for me! ;)

I hope to pull the trigger soon. Switching to 4 ohm dashboard speakers changes the resistance to 2 ohms. Hopefully, I will hear from Toyota tomorrow.

On the positive side the 350’s have a 25 watts RMS compared to 40 on the Hertz. Have you installed the 4 inch Hertz? They are a bit deeper as well. Will they fit?
I just installed the Hertz DCX-100.3 4" in the dashboard of my LC. I had to clip 2 tabs on each speaker, but after that it was an easy fit. They align perfectly on the factory mounts and depth wise, the passenger side is a bit tight but fits flush and the grill/cover clips down without problems. These speakers work fine wit the rest of the OEM speakers adding more clarity to the sound. At least to me they don't sound overwhelming, only requiring to bring the highs down a bit in the sound settings. Overall, I am very happy with the results.

Added photos below of the install. I couldn't believe the sad excuse for a speaker that Toyota installed on this car as OEM. The Hertz event though are relatively inexpensive, sounded much better and fit very well. You can even see them from the right angle through the grill. I did not change the center speaker yet as I think these would be too big to fit, but if anybody has experience or a good recommendation for the center speaker, please let me know.
