Lazy and unacceptable design choices from the biggest autocompany on the planet

Sorta - On a motor vehicle often hitting a specific RPM band where a resonant frequency in the exhaust system matches the pulse frequency of the engine's firing order causes drone. On new V6 Tundra its hell hole is 2100rpm (72-74mph) in 10th gear. Never notice it w/ stock exhaust - Toyita engineered the drone out. That Tundra doesn’t drone revving engine to 2100 sitting still. Doesn’t do it accelerating through the gears. Usually doesn’t do it @ cruise too bad. But load the vehicle up holding gear up a hill & it’s there. Tow @ 72 & it’s there. Can’t do much about the firing order of the engine pulses, but you can chamber the acoustic frequency with methods spoken about before. Throwing a rig on a dyno & then saying it doesn’t drone - like many aftermarket exhaust companies - is where the junk comes from. Better engineered systems can very much reduce or eliminate the perceived drone.

It's a fairly easy process, to tune with a Hemholtz, just need to find the frequency range where the exhaust is producing the annoyance and install the proper Hemholtz in the correct location to cancel that range of frequency out.

They work much like noise cancelling headphones.

I have a custom Hemholtz all stainless 3" system on my 40 series Inline six 2F engine with a header, no drone with great full throttle note, nothing too drastic, sounds stock unless getting into it. I also have a Hemoltz all stainless 3" system on my Tundra V8 that is much the same, with no drone, both made by the same exhaust wizard who knows how tune an exhaust.

This exhaust wizard is so good, I called him up to make an exhaust for my 40, my design his tuning and slight layout modification, a couple of sound recordings, knowing the engine type and talking back in forth for about 2 hours was all he needed to make the perfect setup that he had never done before.

Neither system cost more (all were less in fact) than the not properly tuned systems from TRD (in some cases), AFE, Borla, Magna flow and the like and allot of those come in Aluminized steel rather than stainless for the same price point.

Also running a full custom 3" stainless system with a universal aftermarket muffler setup on the 80 that has no drone either, but that is likely luck as there is no resonator on that setup at all, and my exhaust wizard had no hand in this one.

I ran no mufflers and just CATs on my Dodge Dakota V8, sounded sweet on throttle but droned something terrible (worse than my Camaro with glass packs, things you do when you're young!

It's all about whether it's designed properly!
 
If anyone really wanted a well-designed custom setup for the 250, look no further than Keith Carty of Dirtydeeds industries in Escondido CA.

If there were enough interest, I'm sure he would stock them after making a setup if he had someone local to use their vehicle to develop a system. He is quite popular in the Tacoma and Tundra exhaust crowd but does systems for more than just Toyotas.
 
It’s amazing what engineers do these days chasing frequency out with bigger fan jet engines. Get that wrong & maybe a compressor stall, worse case they let go.

If you install an exhaust that’s designed to let more engine sound through, tuned or otherwise, it’s going to let the sound through in totality, not selectively. You get the WOT wail you want, you also get a louder exhaust at highway RPM.

Whether you call it a drone or just “louder exhaust than stock” I guess depends on how you feel about it. But it’s there regardless.
 
@Altitude I wonder how my installed system don't do what you describe!?

Agree poorly designed exhaust does exactly that, properly designed doesn't.
 
It probably just doesn’t bother you. Which is great.
Loudness & Frequency are two entirely different, but intertwined events. Drone is very frequency-specific.

Bad - You speak the truth!
Keith has a doctorate in using a gas wrench to cure exhaust drone, & is legendary fixer in the 2G & 3G Tundra world.
