I am far from an expert on these sorts of things, but are you saying that you are pumping beyond the first click?

It has always been my understanding that filling beyond the first click while probably fine short term, is not recommended long term due to the fuel overflowing into the charcoal canister, over time casing the charcoal to degrade (in some way) and potentially clogging the EVAP system.

Again, I am far far far from an expert on these sorts of things, it just what I have read, whether any of that is true or not, I truly have no clue.

As I have done for 45yrs as SAE recommendations. I NEVER filll till gas full to neck, Let it click once3, then slow fill till second click. You'd be surprised how soon some very high flow rate pumps shut off. Realize many of us on occasion fill our tanks via a can, track container etc...they certainly don't act like a pump...that is why I dug my heels in on this on. Blind beliefs bother me.in 45 yrs, NEVER an issue. Guess I've been wrong for 45 yrs.......thus my sheep statement......be smarter, or be a sheep.

"Blind belief." What? It's in the freakin' manual. Show us the SAE recommendation to over fuel. Cool fuel from an underground tank will expand--a lot--on a hot day, and push the fuel into the evap system. Toyota knows how their cars work.

Don’t hold your breath for that mysterious SAE standard, but do expect to be insulted for considering the manufacturers directions.

I am not the commenter (@Sugarloafer80 ) of whom you asked the question of, added to that my understanding of the topic in general is very minimal.

If I understand the commenter (and I apologize for putting words in @Sugarloafer80's mouth), I think (with think being the operative word, I could be completely wrong here) the poster was saying that the SAE has specifications for how the pump operates and different pumps can work, well differently, so the poster equalizes things by slowly pumping fuel past the first click.

I do not think (with think being the operative word, I could be completely wrong here) the commenter was recommending over fueling the tank nor that the SAE recommends doing so.

Maybe, I am completely wrong in what the commenter was saying, as I have written already I am far far far from an expert and maybe most importantly, I am not the commenter (@Sugarloafer80 ).

It has always been my understanding that filling beyond the first click, while probably okay in the short term is not a good idea long term because it can somehow leak into the charcoal canister and in some way damage the charcoal.

Whether that is accurate, an old wives tale or some hybrid of the both, as a non-engineer, I truly have no idea.
