Can I trust the LC???

Well I take that article with a grain of salt, they didn't even take a few minutes to do proper research.

Toyota released its first turbo charged engine in 1980 and hasn't not had one since with at least 9 different engine designs over the years until this one, not including their turbo charged race engines.

Exactly my point. How does CarBuzz know any more than we do without the data?

The answer to your question is no and yes, and maybe. All these questions and stories don’t matter and make no difference in the scheme of things. But they’re nice stories. I hope you just enjoyed mine.
You do you - if that helped your day I’m happy for you. I guess I just don’t understand why people take the time to write a useless response.

Well, I guess I am asking for some real life experience or something to add of substance.

I know of 4 catastrophic engine failures in Colorado while towing. This really isn’t worth discussing in your mind?
First you say you know of "many" lemon law buybacks, then you say you "know" of catastrophic engine failures towing in CO, sources for all this carnage? Also, and this has been touched on already, how are we supposed to know if you should trust your rig? Lastly, if I was planning on towing up Colorado passes, I probably would have chosen a truck specifically designed for this use. The LC seems like an odd choice for this duty.

I have been told of several lemon law buybacks and I have spoken with 3 others regarding catastrophic engine failures. These examples are given as a starting point for a discussion on a forum. Whether you believe me or not makes absolutely no difference to me at all. I have no idea what a person’s motivation would be for making this stuff up, but if you don’t believe me - again I don’t care. Go on with your day.

Second of all - don’t be so literal - I ask if I can trust the LC as a starting point for a discussion on the topic. I have no intention of making my choice based on what some anonymous person on a board says. Again - conversation starter. That’s what forums are.

Your last statement is idiotic. The LC is rated at 6k towing. I pull a 4k camper maybe 5 times a summer. I’m not going to buy a dodge dually for that - it is well within its range of towing. I guess, according to your logic, you should never tow anything unless it is with a pickup?
Please elaborate on why the occasional towing at 2/3 of rated capacity is such an odd choice in your mind.

Oh, you've been told eh? I stand corrected, ha ha. I certainly don't mean to offend, but without sourcing, you're just another dude popping off on the Internet. You've already posted about your engine problem, haven't you? Unfortunately these things happen occasionally, it doesn't mean the platform is inherently unreliable, and it seems like Toyota is providing you a new engine, as they should.. As for towing with this, yeah, I would have picked something else, you of course are free to use your vehicle as you see fit.

So you want names? Not sure where you are going with this. 2 of the guys took the buyback and aren’t suppose to talk. The need for proof is dumb and you are missing the point of the thread, which was to discuss reliability in this vehicle under stressed conditions.
Again, I’m not sure what the motivation would be to make this story up?
Are you just a fan boi that never wants to hear anything negative? I’m sorry it offends you to hear of problems with this vehicle, but others may want to hear it.
I don’t mean to offend, but anybody that thinks you should never tow with this vehicle kind of loses credibility as a logical thinker.

Sorry, but the old "they took a deal and aren't allowed to talk about it" is really bad hearsay at best. I mean, everybody has a sister's cousin's best friend's ex-wife's nephew's baby daddy who had an issue that "they're not allowed to talk about"...but they told you.

That's as reliable as a Kia with offroad tires and one extra inch of clearance hitting a real trail (injecting a little humor here to keep it light!).

Not an attack on you, but this kind of "info" is not reliable, which is probably why it's being questioned. It just sounds really suspect.

Fine - I see your point. Don’t agree with it, because, again, what would be the motivation for lying?
But ok, I redact that part of the post if it helps people.
The point of the thread is whether a turbo 4 can be trusted while loaded in the mountains. I have owned many Toyotas and my trust in them has always been unwavering. In reading online forums and discussions with friends, the wisdom of asking a four-cylinder turbo to tow was always questioned. My response was always, Toyota says it can do it and I trust Toyota. Since nobody wants to hear about others having the same problem without proof, I can just rely on my own experience and say that it spooks me.
I simply wanted to have a discussion on this topic but in a world of keyboard warriors it seems it is easier for some (not implying you) to just spout off with garbage and arguments instead of discussion.
There were several people that posted with helpful thoughtful input and discussion.
But, I mean, cmon, the take presented by one guy that you can’t pull 2/3 of tow capacity 5 times a year is just garbage.

Hmmm, the first part of this asks if it's wise to tow with a turbo 4, I said earlier that I personally wouldn't use it to tow 4k up CO mountain passes , but that take is garbage? I thought you were seeking opinions here? Anyway, you're probably right about my illogical thought processes, my wife doesn't think I'm very smart either:)

Quote the whole thing….
People asked, and I asked, if it was wise, but Toyota says it is ok and I trusted Toyota.
(That’s why I bought the vehicle)
Would I tow every week and choose this vehicle? No.
Would I tow over 5000 pounds with this vehicle on a regular basis? No
But I felt 2/3 of rated capacity at half a dozen times a year was not much of an ask. Be honest, do you really think my towing requirements are asking too much of this vehicle or are you just kind of engaging in an argument that you don’t truly believe in? And if you do believe that towing 4000 pounds five times a year is asking too much of this vehicle, isn’t that worth having a discussion about it, on a Toyota forum?

Seems without substance to me.
Jeezie peezie… Dude… you asked, “Once I get it back - can I truly trust it????”

You didn’t asked anyone, or everyone, to discuss all of you fears, doubts, etc.

Calm down.

Well, I guess I am asking for some real life experience or something to add of substance.

Well… then start a specific thread about ^^^that^^^.. not a general question, “Once I get it back - can I truly trust it????”

I’m perfectly calm - you are the one with the harsh language!! 🤣
Why is it that if a person doesn’t back down from their opinion and tries to clarify their thought process people accuse them of needing to calm down?

I wrote an entire page and you choose to focus on the very last sentence?

Well jeezie peezie, just don’t focus on the very last sentence of my original post and respond to how the thread has evolved.

OK seriously, why does this have so many of you upset that I am starting this discussion? People are upset enough about this that they are taking the time to respond with a smart ass answer or an argument instead of just passing by. I’m not mad. I am legitimately asking why this is touching such a nerve with some of you.
I didn’t ask the question correctly? OK, I am sorry for asking it in a way that touched people’s nerves, but if you read the entire thread, you get the gist of the conversation.
I guess for me, if I had something of substance to add to the conversation, I would, and if I didn’t, I would probably not bother to respond.
You must know that this is a stressful process to have lost your new vehicle and some questions arise that you want to discuss…. That is what I’m doing.
If the nature of the discussion offends you, just don’t comment.

Hey Neighbour,
Man that sucks!
I agree with you, pulling a 4k trailer with our LCs shouldn't be an issue. I have been pulling my Big Tex loaded up to ~3000 lbs up and down 285/I70 with zero issues. Also made a run up Berthoud to Winter Park this past summer and my only thought was wishing the Tow/Haul/regen braking was more robust for those hot and fast descents coming back down. My wife and I were looking at a camping trailer in the 3-4K dry weight range, once again seems completely reasonable to me.

To answer your question, can I trust the LC?
For me the answer is yes, but I have also adopted monitoring the transmission/engine temps and pressure when I'm wheelin' around our local trails.
But also gotta be honest, if my engine failed me. I would try to get out of my specific LC through either a buyback or trade for another one.
I feel your frustration, it sucks. No one would want to be in your position.
Are you by chance working with Mountain States Toyota to get your LC sorted?

Thank you so much for not starting an argument and just adding some constructive dialogue! 😁😁

By the way, we must be in the same area. We live in Conifer and I drive 285 all the time!

I previously owned a Lexus GX460. She sat on 2.5 inches of lift and 34s. I absolutely adored that vehicle, but it sucked for towing. Yes, I completely know that I created that problem with the 34 inch tires. I strongly considered re-gearing and adding lockers while I was at it, but I really liked the look of the new LC that was coming out and my wife and I decided to buy it because it checked all of our boxes and I kind of saw it as “forever vehicle”. I questioned the four-cylinder turbo, but in the end, I had so much trust in Toyota that I decided to get it. It truly did tow worlds better than the GX did right up until the failure.
I should have my buyback numbers any day now, and actually went down the rabbit hole of looking at vehicle replacements. BUT as of now nothing fits all of my needs as perfectly as the. Cruiser does and I am choosing to once again, put my trust in Toyota. I’m nervous though, I’m not gonna lie.
I went so far as to consider a tundra, a sequoia, a Grenadier, and even a new Defender. Yes, before anybody comments, I realize the problems with all of those vehicles and know how crazy this all sounds.
I guess in the end, this is a disappointing and upsetting process to be going through in a new vehicle and without asking, I was hoping for some conversation that might make me feel a little better about my choice.

And no, I am working with Groove on Broadway. They have been excellent and I have no complaints whatsoever..
During the time in the shop we have gotten to borrow a new Taco, a new 4Runner, a new Highlander, and a Crown Signia.

Can I trust the LC???

I left half of my sandwich in the LC the other day, and when i came back it was gone. You cannot trust these things.

Interesting…..🧐
It could have been worse though - could have been your significant other!
