I really don't get the no sunroof thing. I've had sunroofs in almost every car owned since the 80's. Never had a single leak or problem in any of them.

Consider yourself lucky, I suppose...
Personally, I'm in the "no sunroof" camp myself for a few reasons: for one, I simply find them unnecessary...on any vehicle I've ever owned with a sun/moon roof, I've left them shut with the cover in place 99% of the time. I generally prefer the cabin to be darker, and in the summer in particular, they only seem to make things hotter. Having the actual glass open is too noisy when driving at speeds above 25mph, so I don't find them practical for ventilation either. Second, they take up head room in the cabin...I image this isn't a huge problem in the LC since it's fairly tall, but the last RAV4 I owned with a sunroof, I would have much preferred to have that headroom back because it felt cramped inside (and I'm "only" 6ft tall...my 6'4" stepfather barely fit). Third, the motors can break and seals can degrade leading to leaks and possible costly repairs...maybe it's never happened to you or other folks (and fortunately I never had a problem with my aforementioned rav4), but it's definitely a common enough issue...it's a just a potential point of failure that isn't worth it, IMO.
Add all of that together with the fact that a sun/moon roof is almost always an option you have to pay extra for when buying a vehicle, and that puts in squarely into the category of "things I do NOT want"
Makes sense, and I agree it's only marginally useful. I also have the shade pulled closed most of the time, but like having it mostly in cool'ish weather, driving at slower speeds in the city for some fresh air, as well as driving through the mountains to be able to see out the top for animals etc. up high. To each his own, for sure.
No leaks in 22 years of owning my prior LC. My ‘09 Jetta’s sunroof leaked extensively from the beginning, as did an ‘87 Carrera.
I have no concern about Toyota’s ability to produce sunroofs that don’t leak. I just don’t want one. I had no choice with that ‘02 LC. The ability to not have to pay for trivial items was the primary reason I chose the ‘58.

I may be in the "no sunroof" club, but my 1991 MR2 with T-Top was awesome.
Ok, now we know the truth about you off roading old-timers. Back in 1929, it looks like they were mall crawlers too.
