I have a 1958 and I would not say its built "better". Like most ppl have mentioned...less features means less points of failure. Not having a sunroof does not mean our roofs are built better, just means we don't need to worry about a leak in 5-10 years.

No way man. He cleared that up right there on the front-end with "I talked to a guy, who would know and he said they were."
1958 has less options , THUS less things to go wrong….
I like options! Softtex seats, heated/vented seats, power seats, rear a/c, folding mirrors… I can go on… for the amount of money I shelled out.. I want them… now that being said, have you guys seen the prices on new 4Runners?!!!! Crazy!…at least in AZ
I mean if we are fancying apples to oranges. I myself did have a 2025 xse awd camry fitted with the all the same premium features. HUD vented seats, Bose system, panoramic roof, awd system to give any Prius owner a run for its money.
I found myself not using half of the premiums that were offered. I work at the hospital so when I go out on adventures I want to go and enjoy. I found the 1958 to be a perfect blend for me. Having all the features you need but leaving room for your own upgrades. I wouldn’t say any are necessarily built better. As for any vehicle buy it and enjoy it for what it’s made to do. Either one will get you out on the trails and back. Nothing a lift and tires won’t solve for either series.

True Offroad guys don’t need all those creature features. Basic is better for off-roading.1958 has less options , THUS less things to go wrong….
True offroad guys dont use >$50K SUVs.
I guess it would depend on your definition of a "true" off roader................ Some "true" off roader's vehicles are in excess of 150K............ Basic Tacoma with portals, axles, 4 link, extended "A" arms and lockers would easily approach 100K.
I don't know a single "true" off roader that didn't add lights, switches, map/route monitor + software, radio system etc...... and wouldn't like some of those features IF they wouldn't take away from the performance side of things.

Well, my box stock 2009 Tacoma SR5, extended cab, 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual transmission with 185,000 miles has been in some pretty precarious situations and has never let me down. I’ve gone places where the jeep guys are sitting at the bottom of the hill trying to decide how they were going to attack the hill, my little SR5 will go anywhere. From the dirt roads the Baja 1000 runs on, to Moab and anything Nevada can throw at me.
I plan on doing the Same things with my box stock 58, its already run 120 miles of the Baja 1000 road from San Ignacio to San Juanico a couple of times down and back and some back roads of Nevada and adventure is just beginning…

This is so good. Apparently the rectangular lights have a lot of self esteem issues for being ugly as hell.
