I got a registration renewal bill for my '25 LC Premium. I live in a money grabbing state of Rhode Island(will be moving out in couple of years) and what a surprise! They have a new surcharge on mild hybrid vehicles now. Extra $100 for two year registration. They did not forget about electric car owners too and whacked them with $400 surcharge. While I kind of understand state's argument that they are losing gas tax money from EV owners and which supposedly they use to fix the roads, LC 250 owners DO buy the gas, so we contribute to the budget. My buddy has BMW X5 and neighbor has RAM 1500. Both not small vehicles but getting better mileage than me, so they pay less in gas tax money. So what is an argument then?
So are they gonna tax me extra if I'll decide to start slipstreaming and drive 100 feet behind 18-wheeler to incrrease my mileage?

Tax and death are certainty.... Yes, the tax man is ahead of the tech curve, his bloody hand is out for both hybrids and EV;s,,,
The reason is lost revenue on gas road tax. So yes they get you if you do or dont.
Its happening across America. Amen, the Tax man cometh.

I'd be pretty happy to pay an extra $50/year in vehicle registration fees to only have 44cents/gallon fuel tax that RI charges instead of 70+cents/gallon here in the People's Republic.

Your neighbor state of Arizona charges only 19 cents per gallon๐Ÿ™ƒ

That sounds like an invitation to register a '74 Buick Centurion with a 455 under the hood. I had one of those (for a very short time) in the early 80's and even at those never to be seen again pump prices, a five minute drive sucked back $20 worth of fuel...by that same logic, it would amount to a healthy rebate?

I wouldn't complain too loud. if they figure out your real gas mileage, they'll add the gas guzzler tax on top of the mild hybrid tax!

I have seen some bitching on the forum regarding how much fuel our Land Cruisers consume, but my Rubicon with 4:10's was way thirstier.

Yeah, our jeep (4:56) struggles to get 14mpg, gets about 10 towing down hill. I'm happy with with LC mpgs. Think we're in the minority!

I live in Mississippi and theyโ€™ve been doing this for years. Given the state of the roads here they clearly are not spending the extra revenue wisely.
