Toyota Brand Mgmt / Brake Squeal 800-331-4331

Can you please enlighten us more on this because I’ve never in my life heard that before??
There are three main types of brake pads- organic, ceramic, and semi-metallic. Any brake pad manufacturer's website will explain the trade-offs between the different types. In short, the pads besides semi-metallic are quieter and usually cheaper, but don't perform as well under heavy braking. .

I've had a lot of vehicles and motorcycles and bikes, a fair number of beaters and never had one squeal like this at any time while I've owned it. It's not acceptable. If it's high performance brake pads that are causing the problem, they need a new formulation. See above for the audio file.
Agreed. I have also had all kinds of vehicles including high performance sports cars. None made a noise like this although some would get noisy when pads became dirty or rusty but could burn it off relatively quickly.

For what it is worth, seems to have occurred with multiple brands and vehicle types for the last 3-4 years so maybe there is something in the newer brake designs and materials? Do a simple Google search for squeaky brakes in reverse and we have lots of company.

The 22+ Tundra had the same problem, fix wasn't issued until Toyota had enough complaints from owners, reporting it to the 1800 number and ensuring the dealership puts it in the system. Some folks waited up to 2 yrs for the fix.
The fix was replacing rotors, pads and shim kit.

Our 2025 LC 1958 brakes started squealing at about 5k miles and we are now at 13k. We took it to our dealership and they said everything looked fine but they heard the squealing. They said they have had complaints about the same thing from some Tacoma owners but haven't gotten any resolution from Toyota. I sent in a complaint on the website and the person who responded said she hadn't heard of this problem but would take note. We took it to a different dealership and they said they had heard of the problem and offered to replace brakes and rotors but said the squealing would probably come back in a few months. They were going to report the problem to Toyota. Ours only does it while it's in reverse and ironically, it barely does it after a rain. I also have a friend that just got the Lexus version and she said she has the same problem. They are definitely lying when they say they haven't heard of the problem. The recall is going to be massive.

Here is the non-response they wrote me back.

I live in St. Louis where tornado sirens are installed throughout the metro area designed to ensure that everyone can hear them, no matter where you are, if a tornado is known or potentially imminent.

My LC in reverse puts those sirens to shame in terms of volume and range. At least 10-12 of my neighbors would vouch for me.

I think we bought a lemon. Toyota Australia seems to be hoping that we'll go away so they don't have to fix it. I will be looking at consumer protection laws to see if we can return it and get our money back.

The Toyota rear brakes are used as part of the traction control system and may be fitted with relatively noisy metallic compound brake pads. This would be intended to provide a longer pad life relative to quieter, less durable, alternatives (if any). It is, after all, a 5 thousand pound vehicle that needs to stop reliably. This does beg the question whether the Lexus version uses the same pads?

When I used to drive my track car to various events around the mid-Atlantic it would sound like an out-of-control cement truck every time I stopped at a stoplight. Ahh. Fun times!

I called in to report it on my end. Just hit 7k miles and it seems to happen every morning on a cold start. Been to the dealer twice and they cant do anything if it does not happen when they have it.

Take a video of when it happens. Our dealer has video evidence that they took themselves. But still waiting on Toyota to accept responsibility and provide a warranty for the issue.
