Toyota Brand Mgmt / Brake Squeal 800-331-4331

My FE is at 13k miles now and brake squeal is completely gone. I had the squeal since new when backing up but no longer.

mine squeals daily, and is worse after i wash it and back up the morning after.

took mine in for the 5k service this morning and mentioned the squeal to the service manager and he said he was aware of the "issue" but not aware of a fix yet for the LC. oh well

If you’re brakes are squealing please for the love of all things holy call Toyota Brand Management at 800-331-4331 and also go to their website and email them with videos so we can get a recall and parts for a fix.
Eduardo at Brand Mgmt tells me that I was his first caller for Land Cruiser brake squeals. I find this hard to believe based on the number of complaints I’m reading on this forum. He also said the only way to get a fix is for more people to complain. So please take a minute out of your busy day and make the phone call so we can get a fix. I know everyone is busy. I’m asking nicely. I thank you and my neighbors thank you for your time.
And just so you know, Brand Mgmt will contact your dealership service dept and have a customer service rep call you to basically tell you they’re hands are tied and they can’t fix your brake squeal until Toyota recognizes the problem and sends new parts. My dealership, Sparks Toyota in Myrtle Beach, SC is doing nothing proactive about the issue. They are waiting for customers to complain, and then further waiting on Toyota Brand to produce parts for a fix. So heads up - your dealership will probably tell you the same thing.
Again, thanks for your time.
Have your vin number on hand and Please make the call.

I am in Myrtle Beach as well. I am at 29,000 miles and have told Sparks about My brakes every 5k service and they claim nothing is wrong. I am assuming after I cross the 30k mark they will mysteriously see an issue that I will have to pay out of pocket for.

I have called brand engagement twice and complained to NHTSA as well. Dealer has had truck twice for this. No resolution. Gonna send in an Arbitration request (look in your glove box books) and see if that goes anywhere. Very disappointed in Toyota and my selling dealer in South Louisiana. I’ve also tried bedding in the brakes in reverse in a parking lot, with no squeal improvement.

The dealer replaced my brakes and rotors a couple months ago and my land cruiser is back to brake squeal every morning. I can safely say the brake pads and rotors are not the cause. I am also in Dallas where the humidity is on the slightly higher side.

mine screams at me every morning.

I called again to Toyota brand management and the representative I spoke with was very helpful and has referred my case to an "advocate" whom I understand will try and interface with the dealer to get them to enact some sort of repair or resolution to the issue.

I have the same issue...since day one. I live at high elevation in the Rockies...so very low humidity.

I've called Brand Engagement - they could not do anything after a bunch of calls. My local dealership was "unable to reproduce" the noise on my last visit, which is BS. I intend on driving into the service bay in reverse on the next one.

I just noticed it for the first time this weekend after 1800 miles on the car. I’m in Dallas where humidity isn’t bad, but this weekend, we were near Houston levels. I’ve only noticed it in reverse.

I also experienced squeals on my Q7 and Q8 in the early mornings and then everything was fine.

Thanks for the information! Took mine into the dealership last week for it. Service manager had "never heard of it." Listen to video/audio file. It sounds like I'm driving a 30 year old Buick LeSabre not a nearly brand new Land Cruiser (no offense intended to LeSabre lovers). I live in Phoenix AZ, super dry place. Does seem to be humidity related and also only happens in reverse for me. We had some rain prior (but car was garaged during the entire period of wet weather) and I'd driven it since the rain stopped, so I have no idea what's causing it. They blew out the brakes, but can't do anything else until it becomes a warranty issue.

Wondering if this would qualify for lemon law status if it continues without resolution. Mostly I just want the noise fixed. Love the truck but can't stand the squeal. Called in today to report it. Person I talked with (Megan) was helpful, said it was a known issue on this and other models and she has been having quite a few calls on this today, so strong work, all! She said she will reach out to her supervisor and customer support at the dealership. There is a TSB for the other vehicles (Tundra and others). The TSB calls for a "brake kit" that will fix it....unsure what the kit includes, but she did say that the dealers weren't getting many of them yet, so it could be a while. She also said that documentation is everything on this type of an issue, so please call! Ask for a Toyota Brand Advocate, because the automated system won't be of assistance in any way so you have to get to a human.

Toyota is better than this.

As a side note, I was up in the mountains and had a long, slow downhill drive out with lots of intermittent braking. When I stopped near the bottom, the brakes smelled really hot....haven't had that smell since my boat pushed a Ford Explorer down a long, downhill drive to the lake in the summer and the surge brake master cylinder had failed. Was quite surprised how hot they smelled for a cool day at pretty low speeds and under no load. So I'm paying attention to the brake issues.

I just called Toyota and logged my complaint about the squealing brakes. The young lady was very pleasant and willing to help. She documented the issue and suggested that more owners call Toyota with this issue. She also said to contact the dealership, however I think that is a waste of time.

just picked up my LC and the dealer confirmed the squeal surprisingly and i'm bringing it back tomorrow morning for all new FRONT ONLY rotors, pads and "shim kit" under warranty.

I’m perplexed by this being an “issue”. It is simply that it uses high performance brake pads. Don’t like them, swap them out for nonperformance pads and they won’t squeal. No different than break pads on a high performance car, motorcycle, or downhill bike. It is rust from the pad material when it sits for a few a hours with high humidity, and the squeal lets you know the breaks are working when you start off. Being the LC250 has regen breaking and is heavy, it makes sense to use high performance brake pads for when you need to stop.
Yeah I don’t recall my Ferraris breaks squealing or any other high performance vehicles I’ve owned for that matter but, maybe you know something I don’t about breaks…

Can you please enlighten us more on this because I’ve never in my life heard that before??

I looked up high performance brakes and was surprised. Google "Do high performance brakes and rotors squeal more" If the Highlander has high performance brakes(?) then the squeal is most likely a good thing. Check it out. Enjoy your Highlander, love mine!

I've had a lot of vehicles and motorcycles and bikes, a fair number of beaters and never had one squeal like this at any time while I've owned it. It's not acceptable. If it's high performance brake pads that are causing the problem, they need a new formulation. See above for the audio file.

Mines a '25 1958 and only a squealed a couple times, after sitting a few days and a car wash, and always in reverse. I do a majority of city driving with lots of stops, maybe that helps in some way.

My 1958 sounds exactly the same as my 5th gen Ram that I had previously owned.. Ram sent out a TSB for a fix.. Once I had the anti-moan kit installed, the sound was all but gone. Not saying this is the fix for our LC250, but it sure does point out the fact that sometimes the less obvious fix is the magic cure. Hopefully Toyota is actively looking into this.

Lots of opinions, don't know what the cause might be but got other issues to focus on that are more critical than this. Perhaps there will be a fix and that would be nice.
