So the housing behind the rear view mirror on my LCLC non-premium has come apart a bit, with a few clips broken and a plug mount within the housing also broken, as if it was forced. Thing is, I’ve never messed with this part of the trim. Pictures attached with broken parts circled.

I can only think of three plausible scenarios:

It was damaged at my 15k service (but they shouldn’t be messing around up there)

It was damaged by light pressure from one of the many times I’ve put my sunshade up (doesn’t explain the plug mount broken) (ETA: the plug mount that’s broken is the one that goes to the mirror, so moving the mirror does cause a little play on the plastic clip. This seems way too little to break is though. )

Or it broke spontaneously from temperature changes and rough roads (doesn’t really seem all that likely to me)

Anyone got thoughts on this? Its got me scratching my head.

Could this be a sign of an attempted theft? Trying to disconnect security features or cameras?

I can't tell from the pictures if the mount is broken or just the fasteners.

It doesn't take much to bust those fasteners, I've broken many of them in the rear cargo area by pushing them in before they were perfectly aligned with the hole.

May have been damaged at initial install.

I've had good luck with "JB Weld Plastic Bonder" reattaching some plastic bits.

A closer look at the wiring. Signs of prying where that plug would be mounted?

No doubt someone's been in there. Looks like it might just be the "Christmas Tree" fastener. That Black piece should slide off the white connector and you might be able to replace just the "Christmas tree" fastener.

I certainly haven’t been…. Why would someone be in there?!?

IDK, maybe calibrate the camera, putting in a dash cam......

I know with I had the windshield replaced on my Taco they removed the trim to calibrate/hook up the camera.

Do you reckon that since the mirror has the profile buttons that it can be used for a CAN bus attack or something like that?

It's probably tied in to the CAN buss, but I doubt anyone would try and tap into the mirror for acess as the OBDII is much easier to access.

The only other thing I can think is when I got my windshield tinted. That could explain the housing being broken but didn’t explain why the plug was pried out of place (and looking closely at the plastic I can 100% confirm it was pried and not torn or done accidentally)

I know I just recently had my windows tinted and they took that piece off. I also recently add a new Fitcamx and the camera kit replaced all the plastic.

I wonder, when tinting do they travel the whole rear view mirror off, typically? That would explain it being unplugged and they’re unfamiliarity with new car model could explain prying the plug off incorrectly

Edit: the shop says they don’t remove anything, not even the housing

I would say the cable was broken off by accident as they probably didn’t know how to take it apart and just started pulling stuff.

This is probably as close as I’ll ever get to confirmation of what happened:

So, James Bond is hacking our trucks to steal them? (joking) How did they get into the truck to begin with? Seems like that may be the weak link. Kinda like asking "How did they break into my Safe Deposit box?" when you should be asking "How did they get into the vault?".
