OIL thread ,,, 0-20 wt oil ???

Don't be an ass. Like many of us, there are ever increasing questions as to real reasons why "20" is being used.....CAFE comes to mind... we are not all blind believers. Some of us older folks grew up in the "question authority" era.

If 0W-40 is good enough for engines from builders like Porsche and Ferrari that don't really care about CAFE regs, and could spec any oil they want, those oils might be good enough for a Toyota :)

I will actually agree fully with this. Both my Alfa motors run on 5W-40 and for track I use 15W-50!!! All my issues went away.....carbon on rings from a 1.7l turbo cranking out 280/306 at WOT were allowing blowby. Not the stuff that finds catch cans, but the stuff that gets consumed. Damn straight!
But 0W/5W-30, climate determining the W, you will find far more tribologists, PhDs in petrochemical engineering, etc supporting 5W-30 from the point of lubricity, Stribeck curve, HTHS esp by turbos these days....etc.
Mike 56 may have spoken in "old school", but new or old motor builders have seen sh!! over the years. Few have seen thick oil issues, many have seen overheated, broken down oil......I BET! Alaska aside................

My wife’s car is a 2016 Scion iA (rebadged Mazda) with 150k miles on it. It also takes 0w-20 and it’s running fine with all the abuse the poor thing has taken. I’m taking about asking the wife when she last changed her coolant and trans with a response of “whats that” at 140k miles mark…It’s actually pretty impressive tbh. I doubt the oil changes were done at the correct intervals either. I have finally taken it under my wing and given it some much needed TLC. Moral of the story is that it will be okay with the thinner oil.
