I thought Android Auto had this feature for a while now.. Make sure you dont have the “Map” widget displayed in the center in any of the three dashboards on your instrument cluster.. Having the map widget displayed in the center will disable turn by turn directions both on HUD and on the instrument cluster when using Carplay or Android Auto..

I noticed for the first time yesterday GMaps was showing up in the HUD! So nice.
Mine finally worked today --I can see the directions in the HUD. When I enable the map on the dash, the HUD directions disappear.
In the dash, the map doesn't actually show up for me though, but the written directions appear at the bottom. There is a bug with the time to destination for me. It doesn't take Daylight Savings time into account and is an hour off.

I'm not trying to offend............. The HUD directions only appear approx 2 miles before a significant feature/turn, otherwise it appears with the normal HUD icons.
I assume you have selected the "Full" option in the HUD display settings (not positive it makes a difference or not, but that's what I have set on mine).
“Settings” press “OK” selections will appear.
HUD Main - Push and Hold “OK”
HUD Brightness/Position - Push and Hold “OK”
Brightness (left and right arrows to adjust) Press “Return” icon
Position (up and down arrows to move image on windshield) Press “Return” icon
HUD Driving Support - Push and Hold “OK”
Full - Additional info stacked on top of MPH etc, Press “Return” icon
Standard - Additional info to the right of MPH etc, Press “Return” icon
Minimum - Just MPH, Press “Return” icon
HUD Rotation - Push and Hold “OK”
Left and Right arrows adjust the rotation on the windshield, Press “Return” icon
Yes, I did all of that, but I will check that I have not made any errors.
Probably a stupid question, but do you have an Android device and get directions in the HUD at any time during a drive?

IOS for me, switched years ago.......... initially I didn't like the IOS due to it's lack of "ease of use" vs the Android, but now with, IMO, superior security, zero hacks and the plethora of apps available, I'll probably never go back.
One thing I've noticed, the Google Maps turn indication in the HUD pops in at 1.2 miles (was 2 in Apple Maps). Not necessarily bad, just different (in fact it's probably a more useful distance, it's just hitting my OCD as "different"). I'm guessing the programming was done in kilometers since 1.2 miles is just a hair under 2 km.

I finally thought to test this today, and Google Maps directions show up in the HUD for me now. Kind of hard to get a photo though . . . you'll just have to trust me that blue thing is an arrow.
Now that mine has shown up, I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the Google display.
The turn arrow exists in isolation (doesn't show the intersection layout) and in my area is not always accurate regarding the degree of turn.

Great thread, thanks everyone for the input. I work at Google (Cloud division, not Geo team), and I’m still perplexed. We just received delivery last weekend on a LC with the HUD (which is amazing). My wife and I both run iOS, and we both use Google Maps for directions. Strangely, I see the directions in the HUD, my wife does not, PLUS she is seeing a microphone icon where the center maps was previously. When she drives, the Maps feature is in the center of the dash but as soon as voice navigation speaks, it’s replaced with a Mic icon. Super annoying, and then the Maps disappears from the center.
I can definitely say that you do not need Full in the HUD settings to see the directions, mine is on Standard and I see them fine. You can have Maps in the center of the dash. When I drive I see a Map, but when I put in directions the map is replaced with directions, and HUD has a direction arrow (when you get a certain distance away).
I just checked and she is running an older version of iOS and Maps, which I am updating now and will test. The other possibility is I have two Google Maps apps on my iPhone, one that is Generally Available, and one that is Dogfood (pre-released). It’s possible that my Dogfood app has the setting.
If I can’t figure this out, I’m motivated to find someone in my company who can.

As soon as your Toyota free subscription runs out, the maps will not show up on the center Dash area (unless you renew the sub). There is a single line under where the maps used to show up on the ctr dash, that's very similar to the HUD.
It’s interesting that you can see the map/directions in the center widget as well as get directions in the HUD. Usually it’s one or the other. It must have been a recent update from Toyota that fixed the bug.
I believe you are both on carplay, but as you may have already guessed from this thread, the HUD feature is rolling out slowly to Google Maps users.. it’s a server side update, not a user/phone/app update.
But you should definitely keep your iOS / Google maps updated to the latest version just in case you’re on a very old version now.
The microphone icon you’re seeing is normal for Siri/Spoken Directions/any audio playing from your phone except for music.
I would test again in your LC by removing the Map widget from the center placement. (You have to remove it from the center on all 3 pages, and then try the HUD again, do it just for the sake of testing) or you can also test by using your google account on her phone.
That way you will narrow down the options..
Any updates or solves on this issue? I did recently upgrade to the iphone17 so curious if that device and software upgrade is the cause for lack of HUD display for google maps - which was working with my previous device. To my knowledge, phone is fully updated. Annoying!
