Brakes Squeal

Lexus is a luxury brand.
Seems like my First Edition is a luxury truck. At least it is to me… Toyota needs to do the right thing for us as well. Some say that one of the GX’s cost less than my First Edition did. So I am not sure what characterizes my First Edition any less that the GX mentioned.

Yup, that’s mine as well. Only the first time out of driveway but it’s every day.
The same with mine. 2024 FE with 6700 miles on it. Getting louder as I back out of the garage in the.morning. Notified Toyota Customer Service and they notified my dealership to setup an appointment.

I don’t think I want anyone replacing the factory brakes, etc., until the ‘fix’ is released by Toyota.
 
Our L.C. also squeals loud when backed out on the first braking with a little less than 5k and has since new. Our Camry hybrid also does this every since I put semi metallic brake pads on the rear a few years ago. I would think that putting on ceramic pads would cure the squeal and eliminate brake dust issues. I have had success with ceramic pads on other vehicles and highly recommend them. If this cures the issue maybe Toyota will buy them for us?

Toyota and its brake supplier(s) are probably busy taking care of Lexus LX/GX,Tundra, and Sequoia squeaky brakes first. I noticed the Toyota owned/OEM brake supplier AISIN/ADVICS has the pads available on the aftermarket (part# AD2442). Maybe Toyota dealers will be getting more of these parts..

Okay, mine finally did it today when backing out of the driveway. Holy $#@%, I've heard brake squeal, at some point, backing up on almost every vehicle I've owned, but wow, you guys weren't kidding. That is loud and not normal. 3,265mi.

While I'll always be grateful for free parts, the no cost solution until a TSB is issued............ back into your parking space.
Not to be sarcastic or anything, but how does that prevent the brake squeal in reverse?

Also, I’ve noted in particularly dusty environments. I get it in forward gear at low speed as well.

In my case at approximately 5k, I got the 1st brake squeal backing out of my daughter's driveway. I normally back into my driveway, as I find it easier to unload, depart etc...... and the squeal has only happened that one time. In my case it seems that it's doesn't happen when I'm out and about, backing out of parking spaces etc.... because during my normal driving and hitting the brakes for the 1st time of the day, it removes whatever residue formed overnight. It doesn't cost anything to try. IMO it's a very slight misalignment (maybe a few thousandths) on the caliper mounting surface in relation to the surface of the rotor.

Your situation may be different.
 
Miss Daisy squeals in reverse… every single time. And sometimes when moving in a forward direction I can get a hint of her trying to squeal. It’s really getting old..

My next-door neighbor is a retired Lockheed Martin, engineer. It’s growing pretty old to him too, as he put it. “ wow Toyotas aren’t what they used to be.” His wife was looking at Lexus SUV, but now looking at a Lincoln instead.

If it’s badly machine calipers, no reason Toyota couldn’t bang out 50,000 of those in a weekend.

My service tech said they’ve had similar issues with the Tundra and Sequoia.

My brakes squeal in reverse as well. Usually happens when I first get into drive it. However, after running for a while it stops. Does not matter what the weather is like outside either.

My thought is the caliper mounting surface is slightly canted (couple of thousandths) on the forward edge. This would cause the pads to wear slightly more on the front edge vs the rear edge.

When you stop with your foot on the brake and put it in park, the pads are squeezed against the rotor and come to rest. This is a substantial amount of hydraulic pressure, normally when you remove your foot off the brake, the residual hydraulic press bleeds off and the “barrel” side pad retracts slightly, removing the “pinch”.

Since there is an electrical parking/hold function I believe that system’s not allowing residual pressure to 100% bleed off (even tho’ you didn’t press the button). Those couple of thousandths difference between the front and back edges of the pads are creating a knife edge against the rotor at the rear of the pads and when you back up, that knife edge is scraping the rotor creating the horrific sound until you put it in drive and release the brake (I keep my foot on the brake when in reverse). The rotation of the rotor with no brake applied will naturally realign the pads to the same plane as the rotor and the sound goes away.

By backing into my parking spot and when departing the next morning, my foot is on the brake, shift into drive, release the brake and the rotor immediately starts rotating, thus realigning the pads (knife edge no longer making contact) and in my case …… no horrific sound.

A stainless spring steel shim may help alleviate the non-100% bleed off of the hydraulic pressure due to……. when it cools, it’ll shrink slightly and allow more space between the pad and the rotor.

Just my theory tho’

(edit) LEXUS TSB adds a 2nd spring and new rotors (probably harder material) and pads.

X 💯 I will never own another Ford.
Outside of an F-Series, I would agree with that. But, one is limited when it comes to full size trucks. It's funny because I have a LC, my neighbor has a GX550, and my other neighbor has a Lincoln Aviator.
