Brakes Squeal

The entire boat ramp cringes when backing the boat in EVERYTIME, Dam Trailer I yell from the 1958
It is a horrible sound. I’ve been there and some very public places, and everyone is staring and pointing.

You would think I would want to get this fixed. Is supposed to be the best they can do. Not a good look.

I swapped my pads out yesterday myself. My local dealer still couldn’t do anything for me at my 15K service. My neighbors have been giving me that look—you know, the one you get when your brakes squeal like a dying pig. Not wanting to wait for the TSB, I ended up ordering a new set of pads: PowerStop Carbon Fiber Ceramic #Z23-2442 for $55. Dropped them in with Liqui Moly Brake Anti-Squeal Paste between the pads and the shims. Squeal eliminated.

Agree. Although it'd be great if you can let us know in a few months. I have had a squeal since last year and my dealership replaced everything related to my brakes with the stock parts, which initially eliminated the squeal. Now, it is back with a vengeance. That might be a facet of the semi-metallic stock parts and maybe ceramic brakes will avoid the squeal. (I hope so!)

Does anyone else experience brakes squeal in reverse? Mine seems to do it mostly after it has sat for a while. I only notice it in reverse.
My 2024 FE LC started squeel noise at 5K reported to Toyota the first time and it gotten worst @ 18K . Currently have an open case but no resolution or attempt to replace pads or rotors.

My thought is the caliper mounting surface is slightly canted (couple of thousandths) on the forward edge. This would cause the pads to wear slightly more on the front edge vs the rear edge.

When you stop with your foot on the brake and put it in park, the pads are squeezed against the rotor and come to rest. This is a substantial amount of hydraulic pressure, normally when you remove your foot off the brake, the residual hydraulic press bleeds off and the “barrel” side pad retracts slightly, removing the “pinch”.

Since there is an electrical parking/hold function I believe that system’s not allowing residual pressure to 100% bleed off (even tho’ you didn’t press the button). Those couple of thousandths difference between the front and back edges of the pads are creating a knife edge against the rotor at the rear of the pads and when you back up, that knife edge is scraping the rotor creating the horrific sound until you put it in drive and release the brake (I keep my foot on the brake when in reverse). The rotation of the rotor with no brake applied will naturally realign the pads to the same plane as the rotor and the sound goes away.

By backing into my parking spot and when departing the next morning, my foot is on the brake, shift into drive, release the brake and the rotor immediately starts rotating, thus realigning the pads (knife edge no longer making contact) and in my case …… no horrific sound.

A stainless spring steel shim may help alleviate the non-100% bleed off of the hydraulic pressure due to……. when it cools, it’ll shrink slightly and allow more space between the pad and the rotor.

Just my theory tho’

(edit) LEXUS TSB adds a 2nd spring and new rotors (probably harder material) and pads.

Thanks for this. Does this apply if I'm also experiencing the same sound when breaking in a forward motion? Reserve is the worst but it's now also happening when breaking from a forward motion as well. Thanks again.

Toyota Brand Engagment called the dealer and told them to attempt to diagnose and document the issue. Not sure if this is an attempt to actually escalate the issue or get to a “ failed to replicate customer reported issue” like so many others are getting.
Can you provide video evidence to your dealer? Luckily (or unluckily), ours makes this noise constantly - both in reverse and forward now, so the dealer themselves could easily document it with video, and we submitted a Dealer Product Report. However, that doesn't seem to do much, as Toyota (in my case, in Australia) has to acknowledge that this is, in fact, a problem. Which they are still 'investigating'. I'm taking regular video footage of the issue for documentation purposes. I've contacted Toyota Australia with a customer service complaint. Auto email says I will receive a reply within two business days, and ....nothing so far.

I feel we all need to put significant pressure on Toyota directly - publicly (not the dealers) to acknowledge this. Comments here are great, but would draw more attention to the brand with comments on YouTube videos, Facebook, etc...

Us too. It's been 5 months. Every day, all day. It's horrible. We are getting the run-around from our dealer. They say they are waiting on parts, but when pressed, say that they have no parts to order because Toyota Australia haven't yet acknowledged the problem. Essentially, we have no resolution. I am currently in the process of seeking media attention. It's my understanding (if my research is correct) that Lexus was experiencing the same issue, but has since resolved it for their customers. This is our first Toyota, and it hasn't been an overly pleasant experience. To be fair, we really like our dealer; the guys are great, but Toyota Australia ties their hands. This needs more pressure from the public on Toyota Australia directly. Beyond filing a Dealer Product Report with your dealer, focus on putting pressure on Toyota Australia. I believe this is outside of our dealers' hands. I would also suggest that we all consider publicly commenting on their social media platforms - not the dealers' profiles, but Toyota Australia's. I will be sending their public relations team a letter about this in the coming days. This is terrible for their brand. Reversing from a parking space, everyone looks over to see which car is making such a terrible, unreliable noise, and it's coming from a brand new Toyota.

It's my understanding that no one in Australia has had a resolution yet, and some people have been experiencing this for 6, 7 months.
Exactly the same for me - all day, every day, every time I reverse. FWIW, here in Calgary, Canada my dealer (who told me I was the first case they'd heard of squeaky brakes  ) has ordered in new front pads and rotors, which have now arrived and are being installed next week under warranty.

so jealous. How on earth did you get them to agree to warranty the problem? Here in Australia we're just told we have to wait while Toyota investigates the problem.
