On start up in the Morning rough shift between first and second

I also have the same shift behavior, and have found that I can completely prevent it from happening by easing off the accelerator pedal a little as the transmission approaches the first shift. The RPMs continue to climb, albeit very slowly, and then it eases into second gear smoothly. After this, it shifts like normal for the rest of the day.

I don’t think it is the fluid being cold.

I suspect when the transmission fluid is cold, torque converter remains physically locked for the first gear change. Gear shifts are harsh when torque converter is locked since it allows no slip. It most likely is a mechanism to protect torque converter.

I like the torque converter theory but having said that I do the same thing with my 2014 F150 and it doesn't need any pampering. Ford Tough eh! Anyway I agree with the common concenus here. Just ease off through the first couple shifts and all is good. Cheers

I just looked and it doesn’t seem there is a tsb for the cold rough 1-2 shift yet. However, it seems to be reported across all L580F transmission Toyota Hybrid trucks. Maybe it’s time to start making calls to Toyota Brand Engagement Center: 1-800-331-4331?

Shift points are controlled by the ECU. Buying a tune for 600 or 700 bucks could help your performance issue...

Cold starts, however generally make things slow.

I let my truck warm up to at least one bar on the temp gauge before driving. I have not experienced this problem.

That’s a good question. Most of my shifts are smooth or noticeable. I don’t get very many harsh shifts. The first shift is definitely noticeable.
