LC vs GX sales?

I see a lot more GXs than LCs in Boston. The local Toyota dealer has very little LC stock, just 1 1958 that hasn't moved so they added leather seats to it, I was just there buying my Ex Wife a Grand Highlander so was asking about them. My girlfriend just inquired about the GX (she's been wanting one since before I got my LC), there's 12 available on the lot at the Lexus dealership. She didn't want to pay over $1k a month on a lease for a car she'll only drive 20 miles a week on so she's keeping her little NX. Kinda happy about that, I was getting a little jealous, haha...

When I began the search for either the LC or the GX my wife said that the GX is a chick car get the LC and she was right! The vast majority of GXs I see on the road are driven by women.
Lexus is a chick car brand, IMHO, or older people. Nice vehicles, but boring.

I don't mean to insult anyone, because this is just a general statement, but I was watching the GX and LC groups on FB before purchasing... Most of the GX people were pretty ignorant. I think they bought it because it said "Lexus" and was boxy/new.

Of course, I bought the LC because it said "Land Cruiser" and was boxy. 😁

I live in Vegas and other than fellow forum member JT, I don’t personally know anyone with an LC. I see maybe one or 2 a week on my daily drives.

In comparison, there are 2 GX550s that I frequently see parked at work (though I don’t know them personally), a Nori green overtrail 🤤 and an incognito. Several various colors parked at the gym that I go to. And multiple others when I drive around town.

Anecdotal for sure, but seems likely GXs are much more common from my observation. Likely people prefer the V6 or simply the luxury brand.

Around here (Boise) I see probably 10 LC250s for every 1 GX550. There's three 250s within a couple blocks, and about a dozen more older models. And that's just street parked cruisers, who knows what is hidden in garages!

I had no idea I lived in Land Cruiser country until I started paying attention to it a couple years ago.

We were also intent on the GX OT but after working with 4 lexus dealers i realized Lexus didnt want my business. All they wanted from me was a nonrefundable deposit and wouldn't give me any ETA or answer any questions regarding wait times or colors. When pushed, one dealer said to expect 6months to a year. We promptly ordered a LC and i'm happier for it. There's a reason the lexus dealers around here have 3 stars.
Their dealerships here are so gracious to patrons of the service department. "Take this Lexus embossed Yeti on us.", etc. While they make my 460's steering wheel turn again. But then that is after all, the service department. Their sales people do give a presumptuous and pretentious vibe that says "He's at a Lexus dealership. He can afford it." They are horrible at reading and relating to people. If I did that in my business I'd be eating out of a garbage can.
It doesn't impress me and their hideous, open wide at the bottom of the grill-front end is off-putting IMO. That's what made me part with LS460s after my '07.
When they get that grill sorted out I may return to their sedan for my wife but no way would I choose a GX over a LC for myself.

We called about 20 Lexus dealers nation wide, there's a handful of "rental white" gx550 getting delivered in California but that seems like about it. We've seen 2 on the road so far in the last year and one parked in south bay. From what I can tell either they're making very few gx550 or the US is getting a much smaller allocation than is needed. That was our first choice but lead time is 60+ days and they're only shipping white ones right now which is a hard no from us.

Meanwhile about 6 LCLC were delivered to our local Toyota dealership last month and we snagged one. We see 2-3 if we're out all day, usually white but there's another mustard yellow one nearby.

A handful of dealerships have the base model on the lot for $1000 off.

We tried to buy a GX OT that was on the lot in florida (out of state) and they wouldn't sell it to us. Said they were keeping their GX allotment for their local customers. They did contact me 3 months later asking if i was still interested. We had LC already at that point.

For what it's worth, the Lexus salesman I spoke with told me that they produce less than what meets demand because too many sales of the GX550 lowers their overall fuel economy ratings, whereas Toyota has plenty of high mileage cars so they can "afford" to produce more LC's.

In my neck of the woods, I have one of the few LCs, the GX550 mostly base or premium are ubiquitous if I am going to see a 250 series.

The Lexus Dealership in my area has a number of GX550s mainly because the dealership is trying to mark it up and people are not willing to pay the markup.

I'm in the South Bay of the SF Bay Area and last year I saw a lot more Land Cruisers than GXs, but now it feels more equal. In April, I was down in LA for a week and man oh man are there a ton of GXs down there!

This makes sense because at the beginning of last year, there were barely any GXs available and 100+ person long waitlists (basically 1 year wait) if you didn't want to pay a minimum $5K-$15K markup, and even now there's very few GXs that aren't already spoken for, but by August 2024 there were LCs sitting on the lot, one of which I ended up picking up!

Someone mentioned disliking the front grill of the GX and liking the overall look of the LC is more, and I agree! I also prefer the rugged look of the LC and don't like the front grill of the GX, and I particularly dislike the Mitsubishi-esque red brake light strip across the back.

I think that the GX with the 3rd row option is appealing for those with mulitple kids and who expect to be driving kids' friends or grandparents sometimes. Also, as someone who is mostly a city driver with an occasional jaunt out to the woods, sometimes I feel like a poser driving the LC. 🤣

Yeah we really wanted the GX primarily for the 3rd row. We have 2 kids and we have 3 nephews under 8 that live nearby and we're constantly shuttling them back and forth. I've been looking at the Aus third row delete seats and trying to figure out if you can retrofit them to a US LC but the 1.8kw battery is just too large and covers the mounting bolt holes unfortunately . We would have paid a lot more for that third row. Toyota are you listening?!?

Omg, I have said this exact same thing so many times. But then you'll get naysayers telling you the LC is meant for off-roading, not hauling kids. But what if you have more than 3 kids and want to go off-roading? I guess you have to pick a different car. =(

I have 2 kids who are both in car seats, and it is tough getting into the middle seat, although once you're in, the width is not bad.

We ended up getting a 3-row GX recently (that we put a deposit on 1 year ago) and one of my biggest complaints is that the 3rd row is only 2 seats, not 3, and we got the captain's chairs since we have the 2 carseats and it'd be bonkers to have to remove a carseat and re-install it every time someone needed to get in and out of the third row, so because the 3rd row is only 2 seats, it really only gives us 1 more seat than the LC did. The GX is still in such limited supply that we really didn't have much of a choice on bench vs captain's chairs anyway unless we wanted to continue waiting.

Like Hadlock, we have 2 kids and 3 nephews under 11, and when we were all together recently, we were able to have at least 2 of the nephews ride with us, which the cousins loved, and 3 if we left the baby behind with the grandparents.

So really, neither car is perfect in the end.

My husband says I'm not allowed to keep both the LC and the GX (what a MEANIE! 🤣), so sadly I have to say goodbye to the LC as soon as we find a buyer.

I live in Encinitas (north county San Diego). At first I saw a ton more GXs - mostly driven by moms and a few by what seemed like older professional males.

Now I’m starting to see a lot of land cruisers driven by a wide range of folks - younger active (surfers) folks, moms, and older gentleman as well.

It used to be a joke that 4Runners were the typical north county car (great for families, beach days, surfing, etc) and in my mind the 250 land cruiser is just the most elegant version of a 4Runner so it makes sense to see so many.

Will be interesting to see what it looks like by the end of this year with new 4Runner’s out and the Lc & gx.

Maybe it'd be cheaper to get a new husband and keep the LC? Just asking for a friend. ;) :ROFLMAO:

I live in flyover country or the Midwaste (kidding! The Midwest is a highly under appreciated area of the US!) But, we don't have much in the way of real off roading anywhere near St. Louis, so it might seem like a waste to get a Jeep/Bronco/LC/LR. Most of those machines never see dirt, so I'm not surprised that I see more GX 550s than the LC around me. In fact, I rarely see other LCs and sometimes go more than a month between sightings. In my neck of the woods, I've never seen another Heritage Blue LC (on the IL side.) The first and only time I've seen another blue LC was when I met some buddies for lunch in the Lou. It was terrible seeing another one in front of me - it was like someone was wearing the same dress at Prom. (I'm not saying that I've worn a dress. Just that, you know, it probably felt the same. I'm just trying to express my disappointment in seeing someone else driving a blue premium package LC. For the record, mine looks better with the wheels, tires, and sliders I put on it. Weird flex, I know.)

It seems both are too rare here still yet. I finally saw my first GX on the road the other day. There are at least a few LC’s running around, and they do seem more plentiful on lots. I’m assuming if they could pick up GX production they’d be as common here, since the older GX’s are a fairly common sighting (though maybe not to the level of 5G 4R’s…).

In my travels through the Virginia Beach area, I almost never see either. It's about 1:1 for LC:GX here. I know one other white LC in Chesapeake, but it's always sitting in the driveway. On the other hand, there is a silver GX I see regularly on the beach in Carova.

Toyota has you covered with the Sequoia TRD Pro that can both off road and seat 7 more comfortably than the LC or GX.

You pose a very good question. To add insult to injury, my husband has two cars -- a daily driver Volvo wagon and a track car Porsche. If he can have two cars, why not me? The GX will be my daily driver and the LC will be the fun car.

But, he's an awesome dad so there's that. 🤣

Maybe my wife and I will run across you at some point, we drive over to Chesterfield often in our LC’s. A MeteorShower 1958 or Underground LC Premium. Will give you a big wave!

We don’t see many LC’s here in general in the Indianapolis area. It seems I will see a few in a matter of a couple days, and then go weeks without seeing any. Personally, I kind of like having a vehicle that one doesn’t see every time you turn around.

Enjoy your LC!
