Engine longevity

Regarding maintenance records, are you guys who are doing your own oil changes adding the record in the toyota app/website?
I always wonder whether that is considered as good as a dealer doing the work. No one touches my vehicles unless I absolutely can't do it myself. I'm not even planning to use the free oil changes at the dealer, though a small part of that is they're also an hour away.

Didn’t know there was an app for that to be honest.

I will have all the 5K and 10K intervals done by the dealership for record keeping purposes through the warranty period. If we purchase an extended warranty I will keep using the dealer for these service/inspection intervals.

My dealer is also about an hour away, so the extra curricular service activities I will engage in like oil changes every 5K, and differential fluid changes will be performed with no need for documentation.

That isn’t the correct version of the T24A-FTS used in Toyota truck applications. We don’t have an air to liquid intercooler, ours are air to air.

That isn’t to say that the turbo isn’t on a dedicated cooling loop, but I don’t see a separate reservoir for one under hood like in say a Tundra.

Correct it’s always spinning even at idle. Turbine wheels are pretty sensitive to gas flow over the blades, and obviously something capable of spinning at 80,000 to 100,000 RPM has pretty low resistance to rotation.

Not to worry though everyone, if the engine is running oil and coolant are flowing through the appropriate passages and doing their thing in the turbo whether it’s under boost or not.

I have been buying the Mobile 1 0W-20 from Costco, and the first two oil filters from the dealer, and the next two (still on the shelf) from Bezoar. I only have the print out of the oil analysis from each oil change.. I guess I really need to learn how to make a spread sheet or something like it to document things.

“Considered as good as a dealer doing the work”?

Just depends on the buyer. Some won’t put much faith in DIY regardless of the form & extent of your documentation.

Regardless, I do know that you can input such records into Carfax if you create an account. It will NOT be added to your vehicle’s report when generated by someone else. But you can see it (amongst the records submitted by service departments / shops) for your self.

Most people don’t keep any car beyond 5 years, so an original owner won’t come close to finding out the engine’s longevity. As others have mentioned, it all comes down to how well the vehicle is maintained. That’s why I never buy used vehicles; I just don’t trust previous owners.

Toyotas are known for their long lives. If properly maintained, I have no doubt it will last well past 300k.
I had a 2004 4Runner ... I changed oil every 10K miles ... not sure how long my V8 would of lasted though ... I sold it with 290K miles on it.. no problems..

I suspect you’re going to have better luck on resale value if you have service records from a dealership or a well regarded shop. The nice thing with a dealership doing it is that the service records can be pulled by any other dealer.

Personally I’m not concerned with resale value. My goal is to hopefully maintain the Land Cruiser to a standard high enough to enjoy it for many years to come. We have averaged 15 years of ownership here recently on our 3 most recent vehicles prior to the Land Cruiser, and two of those were total losses.

So the truck will see fluid change intervals cut in half after an even more aggressive change out of the factory fill fluids with the exception of coolant. I plan to dump the front and rear axle at 10K and replace the gear oil. I will do the transfer case at 10K as well. If possible I will at least do a drain and fill of the transmission fluid, and the electric motor if possible; I will try to do these at 10K as well. I would like to get any break in related debris out of all those components and replace the fluids with high quality synthetics.

The 4th Gen 4Runner is the best Gen 4Runner. The 4.7L and 5 speed auto were jewels, a magic combination in that truck.

The recommended OCI for my ‘02 LC was 7500 mi or 6 months. (For adverse driving conditions, the recommended interval was decreased to 5000.) This was with conventional oil. I followed the recommendations over its 22 year life w me and the engine was still going strong when I sold the vehicle last summer.

Toyota’s most significant competitive advantage is its reputation for reliability/longevity. For these newer synthetic-using engines, I don’t buy any theory that the 10k OCI was assigned out of negligence nor out of ill intent (ie, to cause premature wear and thus new vehicle purchases).

Given how increasingly significant service department revenue is for dealers, I’m not surprised that service advisors and techs have a bias against the longer OCI’s for synthetics. But I doubt their objectivity.

Or, if there is some other problem with the engine while it's under warranty, Toyota can easily verify that service was performed by an Toyota technician.

IMO..........It's all about the warranty.

In all the vehicles I've purchased over the years, I've paid little to no attention to someone's oil change records, they mean nothing to me other than "cool" ....... it's just too easy to fake oil change records. "only been worked on by the dealer" "cool" again I take it with a grain of salt. I either want to buy the subject vehicle and have predetermined what I'm willing to pay and the final determining factor............... Evidence that maintenance was done, lack of under carriage damage, amount of rust, brake rotors and all the little hidy holes where the lack of maintenance usually is prevalent etc........ In a most cases cosmedics were a factor but many were not.

Do you get extended warranty for your cars since you keep them long term? For example platinum vsa for LC?
I have not managed to keep cars for long but considering doing it with this LC

I didn’t for this new LC, my first LC (2002, kept 22 years) nor a 2012 Tundra (kept 10 years). And nothing surfaced on either past vehicle that would qualify for warranty coverage.

But for my certified Porsche, I’ll probably sell it shortly before the usual certified warranty ends. I could have purchased a longer Porsche warranty but I’m doubtful that I’ll keep it that long. My two Toyotas are the only cars I’ve kept for long periods. I get too restless with other type vehicles.

No extended warranties for us to this point, for the LC we are considering it though before the original factory warranty expires. There is just so much tech in these newer vehicles that a bumper to bumper 10 year 100K or 125K might be attractive. Just as some peace of mind.

That was my thought exactly, when I purchased my EW.
