Brakes Squeal

I'm curios whether weak springs leave breaking pads touching the rotors while driving killing this way the mpgs 🤔 Have ppl seeing their mpgs skyrocketing after going through the TSB or doing the fix suggested by Gio?

No change to MPG with the TSB springs. They are not very stiff; basically finger pressure outwards.

The original leaf style spring presses the pads upwards, towards the top of the caliper, but no outward pressure at all.

So I am going to try to have the TSB done at 10k mile service. I just scheduled this, and they said they would have to reproduce the squeal. This is a 40 minute drive, so it will be warmed up and not squeal. Had another terrible dealership tell me they had to reproduce it as well months ago. So why won’t they just fix it like a warranty ? The dealership/service dept gets paid by Toyota. Seems like they would fix it for anyone who asks. I am pretty frustrated by this as I really doubt it will squeal after a 40 minute drive. Anyone run into this?

Yep. Same exact thing from my local dealer.

Seems like a bad business move if they get paid for the work, and something that is documented as a problem when cold…should just be a recall.
Perhaps toyota doesnt pay enough for the service dept to want to bother with it. I'm sure if you had them install new tires they'd attempt it.

Probably right but you would think during the 10k service - and I am having them do a few other odds and ends, it would be worth it. They should be rotating tires and have the wheels off anyway.

I don’t disagree with you on this.

As an aside, have you tried bedding in your brakes? It seems to alleviate the issue for me, for at least a little while.

I haven’t as I wanted them to squeak so I could get them fixed 😳😂Catch 22 !

So got some further info. If a dealership does TSB they have to send faulty parts in to Toyota. If they are not found to be faulty, dealership gets charged for them.
So in my case, I talked to a dealership today and again 40 minutes away. They said I could leave it and they would check in morning. But I don’t have anyone willing to drive over and back with me twice. In general they were not interested in this or the other issues I have with the truck that I want fixed under warranty (data port doesn’t charge any more, rust all over hitch receiver, and I want them to install the black front valance I bought a while back when Toyota had a big sale and pay for labor).

I called Toyota South in Richmond, KY, also about 40 mins. We talked about this brake problem and she explained the dealership situation above but knew all about the TSB. Then she offered to give me a loaner vehicle so they could check a cold start and help with logistics. I did not buy my truck there, did not ask for a loaner, I have had an oil change there in the past, but they just earned my service business. She said they would have to order the parts if the could replicate- and have me come back (probably back ordered) but would give me a loaner whenever they worked on my truck. Finally a dealer worth dealing with.

Some of the inmates here were able to videotape their LC backing up, and squealing, and their dealer accepted that as proof. Maybe that would work with yours. (?)

First dealer I tried wouldn’t accept anything except a reproduction of the issue with their tech behind the wheel. Second dealer saw the video of the squeal and was like “yeah of course that’s a problem, we’re on it.”

You want to find a dealer like the latter.

I was in the exact same situation but the dealership said they completely understood and got it fixed. Maybe take an phone video in the morning when the car is cold and the brakes squeal?

Gonna try. It doesn’t happen every time and I am usually backed in and start off in D. I will sure try the next few mornings.

Yeah after my first visit asking about the problem I started sending my service advisor videos every morning for a few says in a row. I had no problem getting them to fix it after that.

If this is happening in reverse. My dealer got these shims ordered and did something, no more squeal.

Does this apply for Canadian cars?

Technically yes.

I spoke with my selling dealer last fall and they were aware of the TSB but weren’t too keen on addressing the brake squeal I experienced.

I was OK to run the original pads for a while, thinking worst case scenario I would get the TSB done later and achieve some life out of the originals. To be honest, the squeal hasn’t been noticeable lately. That is not to say it won’t happen again but for now all (braking in reverse has been) quiet on the western front.

I'm headed in for service tomorrow for 10K oil change and brake squeal issue. Dealer is next to North American HQ for Toyota, so I'm hopeful that I'll have a good experience dealing with the squeal.
