Brakes Squeal

Exactly the same for me - all day, every day, every time I reverse. FWIW, here in Calgary, Canada my dealer (who told me I was the first case they'd heard of squeaky brakes  ) has ordered in new front pads and rotors, which have now arrived and are being installed next week under warranty.
Let us know if the squealing come back..

Thanks for this. Does this apply if I'm also experiencing the same sound when breaking in a forward motion? Reserve is the worst but it's now also happening when breaking from a forward motion as well. Thanks again.
Same here. Those saying it is likely to just go away I think are kidding themselves.

Can you provide video evidence to your dealer? Luckily (or unluckily), ours makes this noise constantly - both in reverse and forward now, so the dealer themselves could easily document it with video, and we submitted a Dealer Product Report. However, that doesn't seem to do much, as Toyota (in my case, in Australia) has to acknowledge that this is, in fact, a problem. Which they are still 'investigating'. I'm taking regular video footage of the issue for documentation purposes. I've contacted Toyota Australia with a customer service complaint. Auto email says I will receive a reply within two business days, and ....nothing so far.

I feel we all need to put significant pressure on Toyota directly - publicly (not the dealers) to acknowledge this. Comments here are great, but would draw more attention to the brand with comments on YouTube videos, Facebook, etc...

I raised quite a stink when they refused to fix it again. They asked me to leave overnight last night and are going to take video of it to send to Toyota Corporate. Manager said they are seeing this on LC and brand new 4 runners. Another LC owner was there for exact same thing.

Anyhow Will report if the video changes anything. Otherwise I’ll take it to an independent mechanic to replace the pads and pay out of pocket.

I believe the pads, due to the compound used, are creating a nap - a backwards direction of the lie of the brake pad fibres from primarily forward braking, and is why the squeaking is in reverse, and only really at light brake pressure. The other day I was off road and had to back up about 100 feet down a trail. When I started in a forward motion, when braking lightly, they started squealing just like in reverse. As soon as I braked a bit harder, it stopped. Same is true reversing at higher speed (ie. higher braking pressure). No squealing. Exactly why so many are experiencing it backing out of the garage - no one backs out quickly.

Just my theory.

Here’s the video that was just sent to Toyota corporate on top of what the service manager had already sent. Let’s see what they do….

Patience my friends…mine did not start squeezing like a pack of banshees until I passed 4K miles. Wakes up the entire St. Louis metro area. Makes the tornado warning sirens seem soothing.
Brought my LC in this morning for my 10K service. Service rep immediately acknowledged that the brake noise in reverse is a well-known problem, noted it on my service record, as well as my issue with using remote start on the Toyota app disabling Carplay ( I have to reboot the main screen by holding the volume button in till it reboots and then reboot my phone to get it to work) which I know some others here have posted.

She was friendly, acknowledged the issues, and I think the rest is in the hands of Toyota corporate. Maybe they just don't have enough parts to service all the LCs that would be impacted and that's why corporate doesn't acknowledge it.

Meanwhile, I have gained huge skills driving backward up my 150 ft long driveway and backing into my old-school narrow 2 car garage each evening so that I don't have to back out early am and wake the entire St. Louis metro area.

My service manager confirmed the parts, i.e. the new part # rear pads and potentially rear rotors are in stock at the dealership dealership. The problem is Toyota does not want to pay for them until they’ve completed multiple rounds of documenting the problem. I asked the service manger Toyota thinks this is a good use of people’s time as this is the fifth service call over replacing one axle’s worth of brake pads. He said no he thinks it is ridiculous, but Toyota has a new protocol where they demand that service advisors document the problem very thoroughly before they will agree to pay for anything. He did not feel that was a good use of peoples time either especially when it seems to be an issue every single one that came off the line and Toyota has issued new replacement parts.
