I had to get first one replaced at 445 miles, a week later got a chip in the replacement windshield that was able to get repaired. Now today 7 months later I just looked up to see a 6” crack. In both cases the long cracks have originated from the top of the windshield and running straight down. Makes me wonder again about the quality of the windshield since both times the origin is in the same area (top of passenger side).

For those of you that have cracked windshields, do they originate from the top of your windshield?

I have read many responses from others that replacing windshields is not uncommon. I haven’t had issues with any of my other vehicles, Audi Q5, Jeep Wrangler. Ford F150/250.

Hi buddy, in one week, I was hit by rocks twice on my 2 cars. Went to the repair shop and found long lines with cracked windshields in Irvine, California

Just luck, I suppose. I have a 2003 with 205k miles and still the original windshield. I have a 2008 with 255k miles that's had 5, including the original. These cars are used on the same roads by the same driver (me).

LC has had small star crack that was repaired by Safelite at 31k miles.

Wife's 5-series had the windshield star crack after 2 days and 50 miles. So small I've left it alone. 130k miles later and no further damage.

I say this because in the above sample set of 4 cars, it appears there is no rhyme or reason as to where and how they break.

When I lived in Phoenix I had two replacements on my GX460 in one year just driving around town. My LX570 never had one and I got struck a couple of times so hard I was certain it would at least chip but nothing. In Illinois where I live and multiple road trips to and from Phoenix Boston and Southern Missouri I have only cracked one on a GTI. GX460 made sense because of the environment but I could never figure out how my GTI got one. Im usually not concerned about it but reading about the availability for this car concerns me. Hopefully if I ever need one I’ll be able to get it replaced relatively quickly.
