Welp it happened again but different this time

Update: Initial quote is ~$4100. Once I drop it off in about a week or so they’ll start tearing it apart and update the number.

Also, he’s got insurance (yay!). Waiting for the insurer to accept the claim.
Seems like if you know he has insurance then that means the police paid him a visit. Just wondering what that conversation looked like and what they are doing about this situation?

An insurance company can generally find someone using their license plate information. In my experience, whether or not the police will actually follow up is a toss up at best. Long story short, someone rear ended a relatives car years ago and ran, my relative had the plate, but the police did nothing. The insurance company identified the driver, but was unable to collect due to lack of insurance.

Hopefully for him to catch charges also.

We got rear ended with very minor lift gate damage (easy to repair).and light scuffs on the bumper half diaper and paint chip on hitch as only visible damage.

Entire rear bumper and all the components beneath it had to be replaced as everything plastic behind the bumper had cracks and the foam crash pad was toast.

Bill for other parties insurance was just over 5k for the bumper and parts, small dent pull and lift gate repaint and badging replacement. They also replaced rear fender flares as the tabs at the bottom cracked on both sides.

Glad you’re ok and didn’t escalate not sure I could have done that!

I think you’ll likely be 8k plus unless labor rate is much lower in your locale once they start taking it apart.

Much less than I would have guessed. Glad to hear he has insurance - hopefully the repair will go smoothly from here on out.

Police will probably not do anything unless the OP wants to press charges.

Pretty sure the police will charge the guy with a hit and run. He should be pretty easy to also charge with reckless driving, and maybe even assault.

Glad OP is okay!

I have a front cam but have been thinking about a rear - mostly just not sure of an easy way to power it and don't particularly want to run a cable from the back all the way to the front. I will have to look for a local stereo shop to see if they will install something.

It is also funny to me that I need to install a third camera considering mine already has built-in the one by the plate for backing up and the one up top for the rear view mirror, but I don't have access to those for recording as far as I am aware.

There are USB-C outlets in the back, where there would be a 3rd row seat in some non-US models. That’s where mine is plugged in for now.

I will give that a shot and if too annoying long-term, will pay someone to properly install it. Thanks!
Off to order a second Garmin WhateveritisthatIhave.

Running the cable to the back is actually pretty easy. Mostly you just push it up between the plastic pieces and the headliner. No disassembly is required. You can probably find plenty of YouTube videos showing how to do it. The only challenging part would be if you decided to run the cable up into the tailgate area (I did). Otherwise, very easy.

Traveling up to Taos, NM today and this dude decided I wasn’t moving out of the way fast enough. He’s definitely done this before, you could tell he wasn’t mad or anything just braced himself and boom.

Troopers showed up in 30mins which was nice. Of course no one stopped, not even the truck/trailer that I cut off getting out of the way…

Got his plate from the front camera and on the rear video you can see he almost side swiped a BMW sedan. Dude is a menace! I believe he’s got current plates so hopefully they show up at his house shortly.

Fitcamx …. Super easy install. It took me maybe an hour with me taking a call in the middle.

Kudos on your resonse to this guy. It looked like the truck and trailer pulled over initially then probably thought no one was stopping?
Someone with mental problems, or anger issues like this guy is not someone you want to confront in the middle of whatever mental breakdown they are suffering from.
You are a template on proper reaction to road ragers!

Yeah, the local prosecutor can file criminal charges regardless of whether OP requests they're filed or not...for something like this with clear evidence, I don't see why they wouldn't...but who knows?

OP could probably also file civil charges as well
