Toyota Recalls 82,000 Vehicles Because Driver Displays Can Go Blank; 2024-2025 Land Cruiser included

Sorry shouldnt laugh, wasnt sure if you were serious. Mine goes blank now and then, just hold the volume button in for a few seconds. Should come back.
I laughed too. But went ahead and got it done at the new dealership that I switched to.

Got an update on this. Short drive this morning to goceries, on the return I saw the info screen say that there was a software update. I was on my way back so decide to ignore for now.
So, at home with keys in truck and on, engine not running, I went to check what is the update about. Nothing shows on the screen under Settings, Software Update.
On a whim, let’s ask Chatgpt how to update software on these things. First on the list is connected to home WIFI. So no, not connected. So got to that screen turn on WIFI and you get the CarPlay will be turned off. Okay, then it found my home router name, entered password and the truck is on WIFI. Went back to Settings- Software Update, there it was. Select View

Now you will see this screen. Read it, scrawl down and you will see it says this is part one, part two available in 2 weeks. Claims no changes will occur to your dash but…..Accept and moved on

First it will download, then install all without doing any other interface. Download is quick, install takes a few minutes.

After its done, you get this screen

The message will disappear and this is what it shows underneath

So I turned the truck off. Opened door for full cycle, closed door and started the engine. Pucker time, the dash will look dark, then items will show up after 30 seconds or less.
At this time I had to again manually connect phone to CarPlay and back to normal.

So looks like the key I wasn’t aware of, for updates you have to have the truck connected to WIFI. I have google fiber with 1Gb speed, so your speed may vary. Will drive later and see if anything looks different.
The Toyota app still shows the recall as pending. Could be it takes a while to reconcile, or could be that the second part will actually take care of it, if indeed there is a second part. When I turned the engine on and the screen was blank, I had that “oh shit damned software” moment, but give it a few seconds and it will repopulate. Even though Toyota update message said nothing will be done to the meter screen, something absolutely was done to it.
Hope this helps some if you want to do it at home.

Incredibly helpful - thank you!

Got the alert that it was available when I turned on the car to leave work yesterday. Didn't want to do it sitting there, so will do it this weekend.

Also not sure whose wifi it was connected to at work since we don't have a public wifi and I've never connected the car to work (or any) wifi.

Did not get the alert at home this morning when starting up.

I have active toyota connected services and had never setup a wifi connection prior to receiving the notice of update available. I connected LC to my home wifi for first time and the download become available on the software update screen. Only took a few minutes to download.
i would not connect or allow a vehicle to connect to unsecured or public wifi with advertised passcodes. You could always use your cell as a hotspot for the wifi connection too.
I disabled android auto before doing this as well.

Part Deux. Reading these posts made me think, why wait, what if part 2 is ready?
So back in garage, connect to WIFI, and at first didnt see anything, but a few seconds later this came up:

Select OK and then this, jackpot, part 2 of the download is ready:
IMG_6802.webp
Select Accept and it downloads, fast.
IMG_6803.webp

Took a few seconds then it started to Install
IMG_6804.webp

Now this is important, it took over 10 MINUTES. See the time stamp on the clock below. Be patient, will go slow and fast. Think of Windows updates, scary times waiting, but just chill and it will get there. My WIFI speed at the garage was 350Mbps
IMG_6805.webp

You will get the same Completed popup for a few seconds and then this, Updated.
IMG_6806.webp

At this point, ignition off, open door, close door, then full power on. The dash took a lot less time to populate than in part one. Went for a short drive, all is well. Dont forget to reconnect CarPlay if you use it, as WIFI turns that off.

The Toyota app still shows 2 recalls pending. Will how long it takes for the notice to go away, and wondering if it will show on Carfax as done. I use the free Carfax system to track and document all the maintenance. Will let you folks know once things change.

I ignored the first notice that popped up when I was at home since I was in a rush. Pulled up the update on my screen when I was nowhere near my wifi so it must have loaded through my phone. Still waiting for part 2.

I was able to download and install it during my commute. No need to connect to WiFi.

I was roaming around yesterday and got a notification about the update while a few cities away and not connected to WiFi. I downloaded part 1, cycled the ignition to install part 1 on re-start, and apart from a brief black screen on startup everything was back in business.

Edit: I just backed out of the garage, connected to home WiFi and it showed "no updates available." A moment later and the second part of the update appeared on the infotainment screen. Downloaded, applied, and we will see how it goes.

toyota does not want to send me the update 🤔 .
I had gotten software update probably in Jan 2026 and another update in August 2026 at the dealership. Is this an update to that update that you guys are seeing?

if you look at the photos above, you can see the number the update or recall on the screen.

The January update was most likely the one for the back-up cam image potentially freezing. The August update was most likely the one discussed in this thread, also available "over the air." The next one will be a recall on the fuel line, unfortunately requiring a dealer visit ;)

I laugh because I can envision a non-zero possibility of a NHTSA complaint IRT Toyota not offering the fuel line correction OTA. Why not, right?

That would most certainly make the best use of my time compared to making an appointment and hanging out at the dealership 😆

I was stuck in traffic and was bored. I decide to try the OTA update while on the freeway today. It took a whole 5 minutes to download, flash and restart with no errors. Driving home from work I am now hearing a hiss from my rear speakers, and it gets louder and I drive faster.

Here's what Gemini says:

The issue you are experiencing—a high-frequency hiss or white noise coming from the rear speakers that gets louder as you speed up—is caused by an elevated amplifier noise floor or a gain staging glitch introduced by the recent media/camera system software flash.

Here is what is happening and why it correlates with your driving speed:

1. The Recall Software Update Changed Amplifier Control Parameters

When the technician flashed your infotainment/camera ECU (often connected to the Panoramic View Monitor or main head unit), the software recalibrated the internal audio signal levels (gain staging) sent from the head unit to the vehicle's factory amplifier.

  • Raised Noise Floor: If the update accidentally boosted the baseline signal gain or output voltage to the amp, the amplifier begins amplifying the standard electronic "background baseline" (white noise/hiss) even when no audio is playing.

2. Why It Gets Louder as You Drive Faster

Modern Toyotas, including the 2024 Land Cruiser, use integrated acoustic management features that adjust audio dynamically:

  • Active Noise Control (ANC) / Engine Sound Enhancement: Many modern Toyota trucks and SUVs use the rear speakers to project anti-noise frequencies to mask road noise or pump in subtle engine sound tones. As your engine RPM and road speed increase, the system sends a higher output signal to the rear speakers. Because the software update corrupted or raised the base amp gain, this dynamic signal gets amplified into an audible, rising hiss.
  • Speed-Sensitive Volume Control (SVC): Your audio system automatically raises speaker output as vehicle speed increases to compensate for cabin wind and tire noise. If the baseline signal has a background hiss, the SVC ramps up that hiss right along with speed.

How to Fix It

  1. Perform a Soft Reset of the Infotainment System:
    • Park the vehicle safely.
    • Press and hold the power/volume knob on the center display for about 10–15 seconds until the screen turns off and reboots.
    • Check if the hiss clears up after a fresh system boot.
  2. Toggle Vehicle Audio Settings:
    • Go to Settings > Sound & Media > Audio Settings.
    • Locate Speed-Sensitive Volume Control (SVC) or Automatic Volume Control (AVC) and switch it to Off.
    • If the speed-dependent hiss stops, it confirms the update messed with the dynamic gain curves.
  3. Return to the Dealership (Recommended):
    • This is a known side effect when audio or ECU firmware updates fail to perform a proper "initialization" or "zero-point calibration" on the amplifier after flashing.
    • Contact your Toyota service center and inform them: "Ever since campaign recall software update was performed, the head unit is sending an incorrect audio output gain level, causing an active noise floor hiss in the rear speakers that scales with speed."
    • The dealership can re-flash the infotainment/telematics node or perform a hard battery/amplifier ECU reset to restore the correct signal calibration.
I'm going to try pull the 12V battery to see if it helps reset anything before I schedule a visit with the stealership.
OMG, technology! @$#^%!
