Towing and adaptive cruise

So over the winter break we drove from Charlotte down to Florida with the camper.

  • Adaptive cruise control does NOT work when the 7pin is connected (as previously reported).
  • Standard cruise control DOES work. Between all the buttons, and operator error, I was not pressing the buttons in the correct sequence.
  • With some 7k+ miles (about 35% of those while towing the camper) we got gas and I had to use regular unleaded. No issues mechanically with to engine however while towing we have been averaging around 12 mpg and using regular returned 10mpg for that tank. Granted this is a single fill up, but while towing the same camper that day we had 11.6 and 12.0 for the other stops (on the way down 11.1 and 11.8).

As mentioned, Adaptive Cruise Control works with 4-pin trailers, and does not with 7-pin (due to the Trailer Brakes), with the exception that cruise works without lane-centering on 7-pin (selecting the mode button).

The Lane Centering feature is extremely nice for me on those 6+ hour day road trips, helps reduce fatigue.

So, what about a little hack then? Convert the 7-plug to a 4pin? I found an adaptor on Amazon that does just that. In theory this would work, and all cruise control features would work. However, this is obviously not safe since you're loosing your trailer braking ability.

I'm considering a small camper (with a 7-pin connection) thats just over 1,000 pounds, 10ft in length. And with its max payload reached, tops out at 2,200 IBS. Given that Uhaul cargo trailers only have 4 pin connections (even the big 6x12 trailers), I figured this should be just fine. I'd say towing more then 3k in weight, this would be a BAD idea.

Thoughts?

I am still amazed that people tow with such a small vehicle.
