Our previous Ridgeline had a similar issue. The 3.5L V6 is smooth and capable, but these motors regardless of manufacturer make ALL their power at the high end. I have been rather impressed how well the transmission temps have kept pretty stable even with bigger climbs (at least by east coast standards). I had an external transmission temp gauge added to the Honda due to the previous generation having transmission issues. Thanks for putting this report together. I had a 2021 TRD pro 4Runner that I traded in to buy the Land Cruiser 1958. The 4 runner was an awesome vehicle on dirt and rutted trails, but was really bad at towing. With only five gears and an underpowered engine it really struggled on western highways at elevation and would get very hot transmission temperatures when towing at slow speeds on trails. On steep highways I would regularly be in third or fourth gear at 4000 RPMs just trying to hold onto 50 to 55 miles an hour.I had taken it from Vermont to Montana on a 10,000 mile trip and did another one from Vermont to Newfoundland and I really had to be strategic about where I drove and had to watch engine temperatures while towing a small off-road 3500 pound trailer. I haven’t towed yet with my Land Cruiser, but I think it’ll be a nice mix of agility and torque.
