Tire upgrades on 20 in. rims?

Here's a before and after of my '25:

After: First Edition Rock Rails, and 275/65/20 Nitto Terra Grappler G3:

First impression was the ride home from the mechanic. The road is a bit bumpy, and it seemed less harsh. This morning, regular commute, about 24 miles of highway plus 6 miles of main roads. I noticed a slight increase in road noise on the highway, but nothing intrusive. The ride was as smooth as it normally is. I did see a mileage hit. I usually see 18+ on the commute (based on the readout after turning it off), and today it was 16.9. My overall average for the last couple of months was 21.2, so I'll reset the meter and see how things go. Definitely happier with how it looks now.

I went with the Kumho road venture A/T 52 in a 275/60 SL. Pretty mild at tire and light. I wanted something for mostly on road conditions and snow performance. I still get 19.6mpg in town, have had them on since 400 miles so I can't really comment on how it compares to stock. I have driven is some nasty snow and ice so far and was impressed with how they handled it. They are also quiet with little road noise.

I ordered a set of 4 Tundra 20" Wheels that I like better than the stock 20" LC wheels. My understanding is that the Tundra wheel is 0.5" wider, but mostly same specs. I am also going to order 275/60R20 tires to mount on these wheels.

question, can I leave the spare wheel/tire alone? Will I be able to use it to run the vehicle safely in case of emergency? Or should I just find a fifth matching wheel/tire?

If you're only using it as strictly a last ditch emergency effort and are running a stock 20" spare, IMO you can leave the spare alone.

If that doesn't sit right but you want to extract a little more value, I'd pick up a 5th Tundra wheel from eBay and do a 5-tire rotation. My friend in CA got almost 130K out of his Falken Wildpeak A/T3W on his 5th gen 4Runner with a 5 tire rotation.

Two other excellent tires in that size:

Nitto Terra Grappler G3 - P275/60R20
Nitto Recon Grappler - P275/60R20

Any of those or the Falkens should ride superbly well, look great, and last a really long time, even more so if you opt for a 5 tire rotation.

Would you mind posting pics of your setup? I'm thinking of doing the same with some Tundra wheels.

Unfortunately my reserved LC has not arrived yet :(, should get here this week is the last I heard. I did purchase the Tundra wheels on eBay and they arrived already. I'm pretty sure the enthusiasts here are going to make fun of them but oh well. Here's a pic of one of wheels and an AI-generated image of how they'll look on the LC.

Those rims will look strong, and you have a big benefit that factory OE wheels are so much stronger than most aftermarket rims. Go find yourself some cool center caps.

I just traded out my OEM tires for Nitto Terra Grappler G3 in SL Load range, 275/65/20. So far so good, no rubbing at all lock to lock with no lift/leveling kit. I cannot offer any observations on road noise or gas mileage since they went on yesterday morning. I did NOT do the spare, yet. LMK if anyone wants photos.....
I'm currently in the market for bigger tires. Wondering what observations you have now ~5 months into living with the 275/65r20's. Any noticeable gas mileage effects? Still running them without any spacer or lift? Still no rubbing issues? thanks!

Good morning, I have put quite a few highway miles on the 275/65/20s and am still happy with the choice I made. Full disclosure, I drive as fast as conditions will allow, and have only lost a tenth of a mile per gallon since upgrading tire size, from 18.4 to 18.3. Still no lift or spacers, and no rub. I have been out on some less than improved gravel rods with some decent washouts, no issues to report.

Good morning! (Where I am at least). This thread has been great and I think it has convinced me to go with a 275/65 20 vs the 60! Did not even think of it before! Larger diameter without the extra width and the weight is not great. I am about to pull the trigger so I thought I would look for any comments on my plan before I do. Keeping the 20’s (may eventually get some 17’s to put on for all out off road weekends). for now so looking for a rugged but refined look for the 20’s. In the 60 that got me to the continental but the do not make a 65 in Sl. That gets me to DUELER A/T ASCENT, WRANGLER ELECTRICDRIVE AT. Any other thought appreceated!
Also I already have a 1 in wheel spacer on. Anyone out there with a spacer and the 65? Would love to hear from you on fit. Pics are always appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

My gut feeling is that you'll be okay but you may rub slightly at full lock since you have the 1" spacers. That brings your offset down to where a lot of aftermarket wheels land but is not crazy aggressive.

The Bridgestones seem to be highly regarded around here, you can search for more reviews on these and other 20" tires.

Spacers are normally avoided with these LCs due to safety and wheel well/articulation issues.
