Photo Thread: Land Cruiser Off Road!

Starting my woods trip….

Finally I pushed my lazy butt almost all the way through the 5th section of Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route (aka ORBDR). I've skipped couple northernmost sections because these were just super-narrow easy-ish forest roads with billions fallen trees sticking out of the trail trying to mangle up bodywork, resulting into just a boring super-slow drive, so I teleported using a bit of paved road right into bread and butter of this section towards wilderness around Olallie and 100500 other lakes.

LC is the couple pixels in the bottom right corner with Mt Jefferson and Olallie lake on the background:

some taste of the northern sections:

there were couple big fallen trees blocking the trail entrance somewhere in the middle of the trail, had to drive around these through the forest:

getting closer to the fun part

there are thousands of burned trees around that area

there are so many smaller fallen trees so local don't care to remove those from the road

Love it 😊!

How’s it ride with the bike back there? I’ve thought of carrying it that way but seems like so much weight hanging back there.
No problem what so ever. It levels the vehicle with the front rake. Same gas mileage. Not an issue at all. I have towed a trailer with moto many times in it gets horrible mpg. This doesn’t even touch the mpg.

I ran an OG black widow hitch carrier(no wheel chock or front outriggers) for 10 years without an issue. The Mototote that @Roonie has is so much better, more robust and refined. I will definitely pick one up when doing longer road trips, MPG impact is negligible, as Roonie said.
But damn, running a trailer is so easy for the local 60 mile out and backs I make and my old WR is setup to hate, absolutely hate road riding.
*I do have to mention that in my experience, the hitch mounted racks really don't do extended washboard roads well...It's a lot of stress and if you don't have everything perfectly tied-down and secure you might get some friction damage or in my case the front wheel almost walking off the track.

Is that a Kove 450? Very cool. I'm in the market for a stablemate to my WR250R that I've had for a decade or so. The aprilia tuareg 660 has really got me but Kove and CFmoto keep putting some really, really compelling bikes. How are you liking yours?

It is a Kove 450 rally bike. I also have a couple wr250r in my stable. I rode those forever. I also have a Honda African twin 1200 and some smaller Honda crf’s

I like the kove for being 320# and significant hp way more than the WR. It is a game changer in my opinion. I am taking it on a week long adventure ride doing parts of the IBDR and all off grid loaded so that will be the true measure of the bike.

Hell yeah, that looks like a blast! Did you disconnect the swaybar?
No, we weren't sure when to use that! Would that have helped :ROFLMAO:? I just had the center and rear lockers engaged.

Well, maybe not because you wouldnt have had a front wheel in the air, and less opportunity for awesome photos.
If you want your front wheels to follow the ground more independently of each other, then disconnect the sway bar. Your neck and passengers will thank you. If you exceed 19mph, the sway bar will reconnect, unfortunately. Enjoy!

I was just in southwest Virginia looking at some trees that are part of a research project. Don’t get off road often so it was fun to actually use the mts modes for once! Drove about half an hour up a gated forest track that wasn’t bad but very overgrown with that hood high greenery all across the trail most of the way. Proximity sensors went nuts.

You are right in the proximity of some 4x4 trails rated from 2 to 5 on OnX off-road. I've been tempted to go but many say pin striping is guaranteed and I just cannot do that to this truck only 2 years old!

A video, instead of a photo this time. Having fun pretending to be an ATV in the sand bowls. I have a ton more footage from my Insta360, but I still need to process it.

I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we post our trucks tackling the gnarly stuff. There’s a great thread already for general scenic shots, but those aren’t typically off-roading: Let’s see your LandCruisers in scenic locations

I’ll share first: here some shots of me tackling a some obstacles on an OHV trail I was distracted by on my way to a hiking trailhead. As always, clearance (especially approach and departure angle, but often break over angle) is my limiting factor.

I dragged the rear right bumper a bit on this one - a lift will really help the departure angle.

This rock obstacle was fun and not super challenging, but I did have to carefully choose my line so that I was contacting the rocks with my front tire instead of my front bumper!

what's your setup with the wheels and tires? they look great. Also if you don't mind me asking which trail is this?

The term your username seems to be styled after holds very deep meaning for many of us. I hope your use of it is done so with the appropriate respect for our fallen and unrecovered heroes. Have to say I’m not a fan at all, but now I’ve said my piece.

Anyway, thanks for the compliment! The wheels are Method 703 Beadgrip wheels in machine polished finish and 0 offset mounting. They are also available in a +35 offset which is a better fitment (less poke nonsense) unless you’re getting into larger tire diameters where you need to push the scrub radius out for fitment.

The tires are Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/Ts on size 285/70R17 and E load rating. I don’t recommend them unless you have a very real need for significant sidewall protection. They perform fantastically in most off-road situations (their ability to float in deep snow is reduced because of the very stiff sidewalls not allowing for as much deflection when aired down compared to say a C load or an SL tire), but they make for a rigid ride on the road and they tank fuel efficiency.

You can see all the details on my build here: 🛠️ Member Build - Yanu's Build. It isn’t the best build, but it is the best one for me.

Edit: Sorry, I realized I didn’t answer your “where is this” question. Those photos were taken on trail 800 in the LaDee Flats OHV area: Mt. Hood National Forest : Recreation Site - LaDee Flats OHV. ATF class II permit is required, and I strongly recommend armor. You can definitely do the trail (by using the bypasses) on stock suspension, but you’ll be scraping armor (or body pieces if you don’t have it) without a bit more height.

If you’re totally stock and want to avoid the technical stuff on the OHV trails there is lots of fun to be had on the nearby FS roads in that area. So long as you don’t mind pinstripes I’d be happy to show you around sometime.
