My 1958 and Premium, compared

Last week I sold my 1958 with 13K on it. Bought a new LC premium (LCP).

The LCP is quieter. I noticed it has insulation under the hood, which my 1958 didn’t have.
I have the same aftermarket tires on both, and worked hard to find a LCP with 18' rims, the same a the 1958.

I find the seats more comfortable and supportive. I’m sure this is subjective, but my wife also agreed.

The sound system is a significant upgrade, but not flawless. I plan to add a powered subwoofer to it, just like I had in my 1958.

I really like the 360-degree cameras. They’re incredibly helpful for parking in tight spaces, especially since I always back in.

I used the MTS system during the recent storm, and it was excellent. The auto mode worked well, but the MTS performs even better.

I personally prefer the moonroof, but I had a Wrangler before this one, so I enjoy the open-air feeling.

The power liftgate is a great feature. I always felt the 1958 was awkward to open. It wasn’t difficult, but it was just awkward. I’m short, so maybe that’s part of it?

The heated mirrors are fantastic! Why aren’t they standard on the 1958? We get snow and ice here, so they’re a necessity in the winter.

I love the heads up display, larger screen, and better digital dash.

To me, the LCP is a major upgrade and the ONLY thing I really perfered on the 1958 was the round headlights. I wish they put them on all the LC's.

On another note, my 1958 held its value FAR better than expected so the upgrade was not too bad.
Unless it's different, my 1958 does have some type of insulation under the hood...

Of the things you mentioned, for me, these are those that would be "nice to have":
  • improved sound system
  • 360 cams
  • MTS
  • Heated mirrors

Things I prefer about the 1958:
  • No moonroof
  • Manual liftgate
  • and you didn't mention this, but no driver alertness monitor

For me, there really wasn't any feature missing from the 1958 that I felt was a "NEED to have"... the cloth seats are great, the infotainment screen is fine, etc.... to me, it wasn't worth spending close to $15-20K more.

the sound system is now better than any factory system
Willing to share how you upgraded the sound system?

This is likely what I'll tackle next.

As a Base with Premium Package owner, moonroof and power liftgate are two things I wish I could have gone without. The 360 cameras and MTS, on the other hand, along with SDM, are things that were non-negotiable for me. Total game changers off road, especially for those that primarily offroad solo (360 cameras)! I’d also be totally fine with the cloth seats and smaller screen.

The one "need to have" feature of the 1958 for me was the cloth seats, which would have been difficult to retrofit in an LC grade. I'll spend a little money upgrading to a few "nice to have" features from the LC grade, and pocket the difference:

-LC grade color matched fog light covers ~$250
-LC grade door cards for the front doors ~$1000
-Heated mirrors eventually, though I have not yet needed ~$200

"Nice to have" features from the 1958:

-Gloss 18" wheels + highway tires (not a big fan of the LC/LCP wheels)
-Retro headlights

"Nice to have" features from the GX550 I may purchase eventually:

-Acoustic front side windows

This is the way.

🛠️ Member Build - Loba build thread

This is my build thread.

Basically I went beat-sonic + powered sub woofer (under the passenger seat). Stage 2 is upgrading door speakers to components and adding dynomat. I might eventually add a second powered sub under the driver's seat as well but for now the system is enough.

Total cost installed professionally was under 3k - stage 1 parts included.

My audio shop was pushing an 8k total audio system (8+ speakers, 2 amps, 2 woofers etc)
