LT or SL? Toyo Open Country A/T III

Sorry if this isn’t a good question but again, new to this.

For the 275/70/r18, I notice that the C rated is actually heavier than the E rated. Why is this? And what would the benefit be of getting the C rated over the E rated since the E rated are lighter?
It does look weird, but I seem to recall there was some kind of different construction or tread design between the black sidewall and white letter tires, especially within the same size. The blackwall C rated may be an OEM replacement specification tire. Would likely need a Toyo rep to confirm the exact differences.

I think this is about as good of an answer as you will get unless there is a Toyo engineer around. Im sure it has something to do with manufacturing differences for the two tires as the D rated tire is nearly a quarter of an inch bigger in diameter when inflated even though they are marked as the same size. Which begs the question why not use a 34 10.5 17. Same weight but over half an inch more diameter, better offroadability, fits in the spare well better, and doesnt come close to rubbing anywhere. I cant see a single performance reason to put a toyo 285 tire on a 17 inch rim.

What I think is crazy is that 34x10.5x17 shows up as measuring 33.5". You would think it would be 34!

The Toyo 285/75/17 comes in at 33.9 in diameter at 11.3 width and 59lbs. This tire could be the sweet spot for 17" wheels.

Actually, this tire doesnt fit fully in the spare well and has fitment issues backing and turning especially if you are past the +45 offset. The 34 10.5 can be used clear to +20mm offsets without any rubbing at all.

I am about to add 2" lift and pretty sold on idea of approx 34" tire. I will keep my stock 265/70/18 as the spare, with good blowout kit with me in case I have a puncture and hobble to tire center. I still have to decide on wheels, tire brand, offset, and 17 vs. 18 inch wheel. Supposed to be a lot more tire choices with 17" but I am not sure I am finding that.

Planning on keeping my 265/70/18 spare as well! I’m planning on getting the Nomad 504’s (+35 offset) in white and most likely going to pair it with Toyo AT3’s in 275/70/r17 without a lift! Wanting to stay in the realm of as close to the OEM size as possible.

Nice. Yes I have gone back and forth on lift vs no lift and surely over-thought this, but I am doing it. I do like the Toyo A/T III and leaning towards that one. The KO3 is a great tire but the Toyo seems better suited for the LC to me for some reason. I do like the 34x10.5x17 due to the width of 10.5. That is skinny compared to most and I would think would enhance MPG's with less rubber on the road.

Now that you mention the width, I’m actually considering AT3’s in 255/75/r17 (at 48 pounds) or 255/80/r17 (at 50 pounds). Both have a width of 10.0.
