Land Cruiser 250 First Edition - Sunroof Leak?!

Its a massive pain

Totally new replacement seal around the sunroof is/was needed for mine (I've been told that it was a manufacture issue, of course) - so whoever gets unlucky will have to go through all of this...you and I won't be the only people in the UK, that's for sure

The dealership follows Toyota GB/HQ instructions, but it's a case of removing sunroof completely, fitting new seal, re-fitting sunroof etc

Touch wood, mine has been fixed...for now. I've decided to not open up the sunroof for the foreseeable as I cannot be arsed for it to happen again

The first fix on my sunroof was unsuccessful Touota had it back in for a week and took out the sunroof and resealed it and adjusted it . I said keep it till you are happy it isn’t leaking . They kept it for 4 days after the fix in their yard . I had it back 10 days ago . We live in Somerset and the rain in the last week has been biblical and it’s bone dry. Touch wood

The dealers are mostly covering the LC250 under 36000- mile Basic Warranty. There is a TSB for Lexus TSB2075969. And probably will be working under this TSB as a guidance for a fix. Probably mostly the work will be on A pillar I guess as the sunroof drainhose passes right this frame.

This obviously doesn’t apply to all, but The Car Care Nut did a video on sunroof issues that required the entire ceiling panel to be lowered, so that the problem could be properly fixed.. I don’t remember the Toyota that had the problem.

My UK LC250 Invincible [April 2025] no issues until last week.

Day after return from first service leaking water through overhead light/sunroof controls. Haptic down-lighters started activating independently and randomly.

Cleaned & dried the car and then used a hot air blower to dry the sunroof mechanism and surrounding channels. Also applied a liberal coating of silicon spray to all parts and seals.

Have reported to Toyota Guildford.

As an aside:
1. Toyota App wouldn’t work after the service. Had to create a separate Id. with new credentials to resolve the issue.
2. The brake squeal when reversing hasn’t been fixed - have raised the US TSB from Toyota with T-Guildford.

Will provide updates when I have them.

Quick update: emailed Toyota Guildford; no response, three days later phoned Toyota Guildford [UK] asked for a call back after highlighting Toyota TSB’s for sunroof leaks and brake squeal when reversing. And… nothing. No contact, no follow up.

In the meantime, prolonged heavy rain here in the Uk, down-lighters filling with water, dripping water over touch screen, gear selector and switches.

So… in a brief dry interlude, opened the sunroof, dried sunroof mechanism and surrounding areas with a hot air blower, applied silicon spray liberally, massaged all rubber seals, opened and closed roof a couple of times. Result: hasn’t leaked since.

Opinions: thoroughly bemused but relieved. Underwhelmed by my local Toyota Dealer.

Hasn’t diminished my adoration for the LC250. Still love it.

I didn't think anyone else knew what Gummi Pflege was..... LOL Been using it for years! Recently switched over to Chemical Guys VRP, too soon to tell if it's as good as the GP.

In the U.S. there was a batch of Land Cruisers that had to be put on hold due to the drains not being properly hooked up. That's likely what happened here too. There is no way for a drain to get clogged that fast on a brand new car so almost certainly it was never properly attached, is missing altogether, or it was pinched. One other possible answer is it could be your roof rack bolt holes. Keep us posted!

There is nothing wrong with your sunroof seal--all sunroofs get water through the seal but that's what the channel and drains are for

I learned about Gummi Pfledge back in my BMW dealership days. The service department used it to good effect on squeaks that were rubber seal related, I used to have a tube of the stuff but no idea where it’s gotten off to in the intervening 20 years. LOL.

Exact same way..... BMW Z3, it revitalized the door seals and had used it ever since. The VRP seems to work well but too soon to tell about long term etc....... I apply about once every other month when detailing the door jambs.

Hi Woodalex my FE leaked on Saturday morning after that driving rain on Friday evening here in the West Country, identical to yours water through the control panel etc. I m pretty sure it’s the drains and took it into my dealer this morning but neither of us could easily see the drain holes so they are having it in ,to pull it apart. I will let you know.

I’m based in the UK - have any UK guys with the 2024 Land Cruiser 2.8 D-4D 204 had any water come through the front of the sunroof? Roof fully closed, of course!

Drove forward and had a bucket load of water fall on my lap today, and it’s dropping through the overhead control panel - disaster

Wow, that's an alarming number of leaks for a brand new set of rigs. Toyotas have never been great about keeping water outside but this is particularly disturbing. Keep us posted on the solution!

In the U.S. there was a batch of Land Cruisers that had to be put on hold due to the drains not being properly hooked up. That's likely what happened here too.

Miss Daisy’s drain tube was not properly fixed during the ‘port hold’ that affected her. With very heavy rains, I could actually hear running water in the driver side B Pillar during torrential rains.

My dealer finally stood up to the plate and fixed the drain tube problem.

The ‘port hold’ (May or June of ‘24) had something to do with a different hose clamp that joined the two tubes, IIRC. Info on the ‘port hold’ back then was sketchy at best.
