Is your fuel efficiency affected too?

Aside from aerodynamics, load, tires, etc, and also ignoring your own driving style (e.g.heavy foot vs hypermiler extraordinaire) there are a few things that I've learned really help with your fuel economy on this rig.

1. It LOVES to drive a lot. If you only drive 10 minutes twice a day, you will not get a good average fuel economy.
2. It takes 15 minutes to realize it is a hybrid, so never drive less than 15 minutes
3. It doesn't like to go fast, so keep it under 55mph
4. It doesn't like to go slow, so keep it above 30mph
5. It doesn't like to stop and start, so don't do those
6. It doesn't like the cold, so keep it above 45 degrees F
7. It doesn't like going up hill, so keep it flat or preferably downhill.

But really, all joking aside, the biggest thing from my experience is #1, the fuel economy is bad until it is "warmed up". I rarely have days where I drive a lot, so in general I have pretty poor gas mileage. Occasionally I've had busy days running errands and going back and forth to trailheads on a warm but not too hot spring day etc, and I catch a glimmer of those mythical mid 20s.

Here's my fuelly history. I don't think I'll keep this diary long term, but it's been kinda interesting for this first year.

So, I’ve been averaging between 16-18mpg on the freeway since I got my LC about 2 weeks ago and I haven’t been driving with a heavy foot or even go faster than 70-75mph.

I’m not sure if it’s the lift kit, tires/rims, and roof rack, but should that even affect the fuel economy that much? Especially considering this is an inline 4cyl turbo hybrid, it’s pretty disappointing when specs show that I should be at 22/25mpg city/hwy. And I’m WELL below that lol.

Has anyone else here been under 20mpg with their fuel efficiency?
Are there any tune options to help fuel efficiency on these?

Thanks in advance, any and all help is appreciated 🤙🏽
Vader,
I have noticed my mileage improve over the months that I have owned my LC. So you have that to hope for.
If you have gone to a more aggressive tire such as an All-terrain T/A you can expect about a 10% reduction in fuel consumption from the tire change alone.
I have also noted that my mileage is very much tied into acceleration from dead stops. It is a heavy vehicle and the 4 banger has to work to move it. Easy on the pedal from cold starts has a great impact on the LC. More so than other 4x4s I have owned.

Good luck

I'm coming up on one year ownership of my 1958. Factory except for the roof rack. My experience is this:
Summer gas mileage is significantly better than winter. That's normal but seems more pronounced.
Using cruise control on the highway has a negative effect on MPG. Batteries never seem to kick in.
Driving only around town I get about 18 MPG
Mixed driving I'm between 20 and 22 MPG strictly premium fuel
I have a lighter touch to the gas pedal.
If you have to worry about MPG, you should look elsewhere.

All I’ve done to a FE is wheels tires. 4th oil change at 15k is tomorrow. I use 93 octane and add Lucas Upper Cylinder Lube/Fuel Injector cleaner at every oil change and a few in between. About all of my mileage is stop and go in town and I average 22mpg. I think yours will improve in town

I go by this formula for our rigs:

Lift, each inch is -0.5 mpg.
All-Terrain Offroad Tires: -1 mpg
Each inch diameter increase in tires: -1 mpg
Roof-rack: -1 ~ 2 mpg
each unit of 50lb increase in armor weight: -0.5 mpg.

And no... these are not scientifically measured. :ROFLMAO:

Most gas stations in my area only go up to 91. I usually get 91 anyway though

Well shit haha according to your formula I’m doing pretty damn good cause I should be at 15.5mpg if that’s the case. The last few days I’ve been averaging between 18.6-19.5 so hopefully it gets better? Lol cool name btw, my K9’s name is Onyx

Oh I drive about 50 miles one way going to work, and I commute 5 days a week aside from leisurely drives. Going uphill isn’t too bad, I mean obviously you need more throttle but that’s just physics. But I can’t cruise under 55 on the major highways here when traffic flow is usually around 70-80
I’ll go 60, 65 max on the interstate. Above 55, Miss Daisy’s MPG drops like a rock.

Mine has 20 tires and when driven very carefully gets 19 mpg in the city and 20 on highway

Drive @ 55mph for best fuel efficiency. Its very simple and applies to all cars.

I generally get the factory mpg now, even with a roof rack. I have the stock tires. It took a few days after getting it for it to settle down mpg-wise. I almost always drive in either ECO or Normal mode. Also the best mileage is when on level ground. Up and down lowers mileage, even on other hybrid vehicles (we also have a Prius).

Hybrid engines take some learning curve. I drove a Rav4 Prime (plug-in hybrid) for the last 4 years and it was nowhere close to the advertised mpg with my roofrack and all terrain tires. It is what it is. Smile per mile. Considering vehicles in the same class that's capable of doing the same things are most likely under 15mpg. I am content.

Just rolled over 2k. Travelled 400 highway miles @75mph. Nitto tires 22mpg… I’ll take it!
