So, I know many things are the same as the 250, but the running gear and engine are in the 300 it tows more than the 250 and more than the 200. I am getting ready to sell my 250 for the GX because I need more towing capacity. I off road my 250 and will off road the GX but 9000 lbs of towing is hard to pass up. What are your thoughts?

The only show stopper for me with the GX is the mystery behind the v6 failures. For me i knew i would be pushing the engine hard with towing and offroad, so i bailed on the GX. The other issue ultimately ending quest for GX OT was availability of OTs and lexus policy of only selling locally -as in nearest dealer to you. I actually went to florida with funds in hand and they would not sell me the OT they had on the lot. I live in AL. Our local lexus dealer salespeople were jerks too, which subsequently sent me to the toyota dealer. I dont regret the LC. Our new defender can tow 9000 pounds (according to the owners manual).
Side bar, i would buy a defender before the GX. The air suspension is awesome for offroad, no drama with installing an aftermarket lift.

Nah, the GX is still a 16.5’ long, <9.5’ wheelbase platform. I’ve been towing my entire adult life and have learned that length matters in a TV. If that extra 3klbs is needed I’m looking at an LX or Sequoia.

Further explanation now that I have a moment. If I am being honest, the LC/GX is something you buy for the purpose of off-roading, looking good going down the road, or enthusiasm with the line. The moment a utilitarian need arises outside of those reasons conflict arises. I would argue that no Toyota available in NA is a primary TV compliant option, as every one of them requires concession to justify the purpose. Yes, even the Sequoia and Tundra are quarter-ton options that happen to be able to tow moderately heavy loads with decent ability. For that reason, if I wanted the option to tow more as a primary precursor to purchase, I would have more strongly considered the GX. But, to make that transition from LC to GX w/ towing being a driving factor (“9000 lbs of towing is hard to pass up.”) is counter to my logic. That’s why I mention the LX or Sequoia.

I've towed several years and my camper is not overly long but it sits right at the tow limit and I don't like towing even near the limit. I will be taking this off road just like my 250. It has the same off road capability as my 250 and the cost isn't that much greater. The LX is out of my range and the Sequoia is too big.

I have talked to a few dealers and have not had a problem with them saying they wouldn't sell to me. My local sells at MSRP and I also don't mind the wait don't need it for at least 6 months.

Talked to a Lexus tech who told me they have yet to see a GX and the 2027 would probably still be the most reliable out of the bunch. I agree that a 2024 would be the least reliable but it improves everyday.

Fair enough, it’s your money and your choice. However, you justification is a personal solution to a very specific situation. Not to disparage your situation or you’re justification, but a singular instance of justification hardly makes the GX a spiritual successor.

Also, both the GX and LC have pros and cons when compared side-by-side in terms of off-road capability. It would be a tough argument to make that either one is more capable or less capable, but they are definitely not equally capable. Dimensions alone tell that tale.

Also also, if I may be allowed a brief moment of pedantry, the GX isn’t a successor to the J250 Land Cruiser, it is a variant of it. The GX550 is a J250-series Prado, specifically a VJA252:

The LX is the closest thing we have to a 200 successor, but if you need to tow 9000 lb, I would go with a Sequoia.

I want to make sure I understand your thoughts here. You think it is just one thing I'm using to justify moving to a GX right? I really want to make the right choice and I don't think so but I'm definitely willing to listen because when I got my 250 the towing capacity was an issue for me when I purchased it originally.

Guess I wasn't stating it was the spiritual successor based on my personal need and maybe I included my need and that mudied the water.

As for my move to Lexus, my choices were keep my 250 and buy something that can tow my camper. Don't need another vehicle to pay for.

Sell my 250 and buy something that can tow my camper. Then I may not have something as capable off road.

Sell my 250 and buy a GX that can do the exact same thing off road and tow my camper.

I know the LX would 100% solve my issue but the price is 100% out of the range my accountant would let me buy.

The GX is a Lexus badged Land Cruiser designed to appeal to the luxury buyer. It’s the “successor” to the Land Cruiser in the same way, I guess, that the Cadillac Cimmaron was the “successor” to the Chevy Cavalier.

The main design difference of any impact is the engine. But really the specs are similar enough that the V6 is more a preference than an upgrade. Depending on your point of view towards automotive emissions, it could be seen as a downgrade.

I think you are missing what I'm saying. I'm not saying it is the successor to the 250 I'm saying it is the successor ot the 200. I'm comparing the very heavy-duty 200 to the much less heavy-duty 250. The GX has the same cv axles as the LX, same 9.5in rear end and as Tinker has shown all the mounting locations are much thicker than the 250. The GX and the LX have the same gear ratio 3.07 the 250 is 3.538. I also understand the LX and the 300 are basically the same but cost wise the GX is closer to the 200 and 300.

No I understand what you’re saying, I’m just disagreeing. The J252 undoubtedly has some stronger components than the j250 does, but no it isn’t the successor to the J200; the J300 is. It is true though that the J252 (IMO only) carry over much of the bloat from the 200-series that the 250-series is intended to move away from.

Sequoia yes, but the LX has the exact same 112.2 wheelbase as the 250 and 252

There are many differences. Although the complete suspension can be moved to the 250 and the GX it would be like taking an F-350 suspension and putting it on an F-150 and visa versa. The GX has the same suspension as the LX but the 250 has the same suspension as the base 4Runner and Tacoma.

So are you comparing the 250 to a Cavalier? Which I'm not saying at all.

I think the differentiator here is "spiritual" successor.
The 300 is the literal successor to the 200, but if we're talking spiritual, then we're comparing based on vibes. Which there's nothing wrong with. I get the comparison that way.

Reading the OP more thoroughly - sounds like you have a towing requirement that presses the limit of the LC’s rating.

The GX may have a higher tow rating but I doubt it would meaningfully improve your situation. It’s the same size vehicle relative to your trailer and nearly the same weight.

To me, a larger vehicle would be a more sensible solution to your issue.

Sequoia yes, but the LX has the exact same 112.2 wheelbase as the 250 and 252
Yes, good point. Overall length was my thought, but agreed that in towing wheelbase is the more important element. Thanks for keeping me honest!

Those differences are minor in the grand scheme. I doubt they would make the GX a notably better solution for you to tow. Also the suspension differences between a Land Cruiser and a GX are nothing like the differences between an F150 and an F350. I’m sure you know that.

Yes, I was comparing the LC to the Chevy inasmuch as the comparison applies.

If I’m being honest, yes and no. The towing element is the only aspect of the deliberation you shared, and thus the only element I addressed. In stride, I don’t presume to know the ambitions and thoughts of others, so while I didn’t assume it was a single-dimensional decision, I was not going to presume the other aspects of your thought process.

What I took an adverse position to (this was a discussion thread, right?) is the idea that the GX is, in some way, special in distinction as the LC successor. I don’t disagree it is part of the succession, rather a part of the evolution, but it certainly is not THE successor.

I like thought experiments and passionate debate. I also like losing handedly (@Mtn40 got me good above). My feelings aren’t involved, so please dismantle away!

I'm also saying it is the spiritual successor not the actual successor. In the US we don't get the 300 and in your example we don't have Land Cruisers at all. There is a lot of issues I have with Toyota and Lexus here. If one looks at the Overtrail there is no camera rear view mirror. There is no electric gas cover. There are more mechanical things on the Overtrail than the 250. All I'm saying is that if Toyota has made a spiritual successor to the Land Cruiser in the US it is the GX and not the 250. I am also saying that if you want a 300 Land Cruiser in the US you can't have it you have to buy an LX which is the very over luxurious 300 that many including me did not want.

No, I did want to make sure I understood what you are saying no animosity interested. I opened this discussion for that very reason. I wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaking what you said. And Like I said and to your point I did only include for my reasoning the towing capacity and you are right that should have been made more clear.
