Increase Payload Capacity

Supposedly the GX550 has bigger brakes than the 250. Maybe those can be swapped in.

I'd love to see someone try it and find out if it's possible without too much work.
I suspect the reason LC’s brake is smaller is because it is a regen brake. So not all energy was converted into thermal. That is why I don’t know how to convert the energy (E=1/2MV^2) into a meaningful indicator of mass it can handle. Maybe somebody can do a bit more research on this.

Parts diagrams say otherwise, calipers, pads, rotors and even pistons and piston counts are the same part numbers and quantities. Only thing I haven’t checked is the master brake cylinder and pad material but the pads have the same part number so there is no difference. Only difference I could see is the fitting kit part numbers are different.

The transmission may have a brake in it for GX550 much like the previous Tundras? But otherwise there is no difference in brakes that I can find??

Good to know about the PNs.
I don’t know any of this for sure, but made the comment based on this post from someone who has both and seems to take them apart and look at this kind of stuff.

Don’t see how’s it possible based on part numbers and the fact people are running 17” wheels on the 550s. The additional .45”diameter wouldn’t clear the 17” wheels due the brake caliper unless it’s trim based which it may be?

Even the Lexus TSB makes no mention of differing parts based on trim and they are the same as the Toyota TSB except the fitting kit.

I’d have to see a measurement of this, may have been a early design that later got changed before production release and Lexus just conveniently forgot to mention the reduced spec? There is official Toyota literature showing 18” F and 17” R rotors and that is completely bogus!

It would make sense if they were bigger due higher payload and towing, just see no evidence of such.

One answer to the increase payload question might be to look at what arctic Truck did for their 37 and if it changed the payload capacity. Since that part of Toyota they would know what to address.

I was thinking about it before. But based on the image I saw, I highly doubt that build was created based on practicality. That car looks more like a mall crawler to me.

That “car” is designed for extreme arctic conditions, and is equipped with modifications to be useful in places like Iceland.

Arctic Trucks anre out there doing things most rigs couldn’t even attempt. Their Toyotas have crossed the entire Greenland ice cap, navigating crevasse fields and glaciers that swallow lesser machines. In Antarctica, they’ve racked up nearly 10,000 km in a single expedition at -50°C, carrying fuel, supplies, and people across the plateau where tracked vehicles used to be the only option. They’ve supported world record missions, like Maria Leijerstam’s solo bicycle ride to the South Pole, carving a path for her across the Ross Ice Shelf. They’ve run fuel depots for ski expeditions, ferried scientists and camera crews to document untouched places, and even made it to the Pole of Inaccessibility - a point so brutally remote the only thing there is a frozen Lenin statue. And then there’s the Arctic Trucks Hilux AT38 on 38s which became the first wheeled vehicle in history to drive to the Magnetic North Pole, beating a dog sled team to the finish. That’s not mall crawler territory.

Arctic Trucks is a company with a track record of building rigs that can handle terrain and conditions most of us will never imagine let alone experience.

The level of ignorance on display in this whole thread only grows.

Well, I do not have any position to the company since I don’t know them. But since you have to talk like an ass hole pointing finger so arrogantly, so let’s see.

First, with all these long descriptions you just offer about the company, you never even once, I meant once, talk about what happened to that AT37 build, and the real world test it has done. Not just that, they have never published ANY photos at all running this car in any scenarios remotely close to what you just said. Why are you throwing all the garbage to dilute the discussion we have here. Make your point and provide actual information. Stop being bogus and act like a real living human please. Sharing photos of that AT37 build to confirm all these claims you just made. Which report confirms that they have driven that car under -50F for 10000 km? How many load did they carry? Words are cheap, Photo/video please.

Now another BS in that build is the addition of super sized tire is completely unjustified for plateau traveling. Rock climbing maybe. The mud guard and flare are mostly not functional but cosmetic. The slider they replaced also has no point other than looked pretty. Just looked at these changes is enough to question the practicality of this build. Dalton Highway strongly recommend traveller to carry at least two full size spare regardless what rubber you have, they did not make effort to follow that extra safety suggestion which suggest to me it is build to show mainly and again they never discussed the payload capacity which makes it totally irrelevant to this subject. That build with 1000 lbs payload is going to drop the gas efficiency to probably 15 mpg or less. To travel long distance and offroad without refueling they need at least 3-4 NATO 5 gallon jerrycan, which the weight on the roof will not only limit the supply you can go with the car and also destabilize the vehicle keeping heavy weight over the roof. You will end up having more than 150 lbs on the roof with all equipment you have to carry.

So, stop being and ass hole and read the discussion before you jump in and throw these random irrelevant garbage to people.

Wow, just wow!

Artic trucks are and have been in official partnership with Toyota since 1990!

The wide tires are ultra purposeful along with the fender flares. What happens in subzero environments when you’re spraying snow and ice down the side, you get frozen inside the vehicle as the doors won’t open. The tires are far superior in snow, ice, lava rock laden, sand on in some mud situations and other extreme environments that Artic trucks specializes in for vehicle modifications. They aren’t making anything based upon looks.

Yes they are very purpose built and will suck at allot of other stuff, they are a purpose build specialist. The point was you may want to contact them to see if they have good information on how to increase payload not whether that truck has an application for you. Australian companies would be another great source as they do government approved GVM upgrades, some for LC250 are in the works and some may be out and approved already?

For what your considering in modifications if followed through with (bumpers, suspension mods and maybe more). Yours will be turned into a purpose built vehicle that will only be semi good in one area and the daily use will be crap, better get more Jerry cans as you’ll need them.

You say you need increased payload to carry what you need for a camping trip and later say you will maybe add both a front and rear bumper that will take all the increased payload away and then some!

Then admittedly you say your numbers are just arbitrary and thrown out their to highlight crappy payload and your use case isn’t likely to be what your originally said, it’s just wasting people's energy and good nature, it’s disrespectful and entitlement IMO. Nobody is here to cater to your requests/demands, be respectful and ask serious questions after having done some of your own research and don’t discount what you don’t understand.

Quite honestly I’m not sure why you ask for advice and then discount most of it in multiple threads? Maybe it’s a Cali perfectionist, snob I know everything…,about nothing entitled thing or your just seeing if people will think it sounds like a good idea so you’ll feel good about doing a modification that you likely have no need for or fully understand what the pros and cons are of do it.

You have much to learn about off-road, vehicles and just life in general by the sound of it!!

I really think you bought the wrong vehicle for what you think your going to be doing with it and believe you to be a danger to anyone off grid.

Rant over and I’ll leave you and posts alone from here on. Good luck and please educate yourself.

The amount of reading comprehension you have demonstrated is probably lower than your 8-year old at home.

Still post all the off-topic nonsense without a single sentence talking about payload on LC250. Let’s just look at tire. Not only wide tire actually reduce the traction in the ice, and it is also the least important improvement you need to increase payload rating.

Seriously if you want to do some marketing work for Arctic you can just start another thread to show off how great of a mall crawler it is and I will agree with you. But if you are really interested talking about payload on Arctic show us ligitimate evidence what they did improves the payload capacity and by how much. The math is simple as I shared earlier.

It’s best not to attempt to make proper sense of any of this, I’m learning.

There is something no right about this thread.
Not sure what yet, way to Chat whatever.

What happens to the fourth person, uninvited based on what the internet tells you to do? Or is it still x4 full sized adults suffering.

This thread as several others like it are leading, suggestive to get others to do work or comment in a way that is useable for other purposes than the posted reasons.
