How quiet is it as a highway cruiser?

It's not bank vault quiet but in my experience on blacktop, going 75 mph with the stock ATs (or now on snow tires - Michelin X-ice) there is no problem holding a conversation with passengers or to turn the radio above 50%, it's never been fatiguing to me as a driver over several thousand miles of interstate travel so far. Engine noise is only thing when you are pedal to the metal passing or trying to maintain high speed up an incline. Wind noise seems very dependent upon if there is a head, tail or cross wind. There is a low howl/moaning sound that comes from the lower corners of the windshield when the speed and outside wind direction are just so but it never gets out of control and certainly never as loud as my FJ. What I notice most is the tire noise of other cars passing/being passed on the interstate. I don't hear it in commuting traffic, which is usually slower, but on road trips at full speed I sometimes find myself checking to see if there is a window cracked open a bit because the sound is markedly more noticeable than the noise floor from the LC itself. Don't know if that is the lack of acoustic glass or lack of sound deadening materials in the door. Probably both.

Obviously it depends on what you’re comparing it to.

Mine is much quieter than my 2016 Porsche 911 and discernibly louder than our Mercedes GLC. But anyone would expect that.

The LC is quiet enough inside that you can have conversations at normal levels without raising your voice. Some wind noise is there if you listen for it but it’s not intrusive.

Wind noise is loud. This vehicle is not quite compared to previous GX460.

My LC is quieter than my GX 550 Lux + and my Sequoia Platinum. I sense the difference is the LC only has a small sunroof compared to the massive panoramic sunroofs on the other two. Crossbars above those panoramics are horrible for noise on the highway. Thinking about removing the crossbars from the LC when not in use just to see how much of a difference it makes. For another comparison, my LC is definitely noisier on the highway than my old 2020 and 2023 Defenders. But all in all, for a big blocky body on frame truck, the noise doesn’t bother me and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the $70k or below price range.

I find the Landcruiser relatively quiet. The hybrid and turbo results in the RPMs staying down around 1500 to 2000 almost entirely while on the highway. As a highway cruiser there are a few short comings.

  • Side view mirror vibrate at highway speeds.
  • The ride is good for a truck, but compared to a unibody SUV the ride is nowhere nearly as smooth.
  • I have the Michelin tires. I really doubt the A/T tires help noise and handling.

Fairly significant wind noise. Much more than my 2018 Grand Cherokee. The LC is better than the GC in every way except wind noise and a place to put my sunglasses.

On the highway it's 8-10dB quieter than my 5th Gen 4Runner was, a quite noticeable difference.

How quiet is the LC as a highway cruiser? Road or wind noise? Is the GX 550 any quieter?
My 1958 is much quieter than the 2016 TRD 4X4 I just sold to get the new LC. Much nicer ride and definitely quieter.

Shock! The 1958 was quieter than the GX 550 Overtrail+ I am skeptical because the GX has more sound dampening and better glass but it also has a bigger roof rack and ferring.

Just a guess, but perhaps the cloth seats are better at absorbing sound than leather seats?

When I get around to having the stereo in my 1958 redone this Spring, part of that will include some dynomat-type stuff inside the doors.

I'd say it's overall a louder than normal vehicle at highway speeds. Sure compared to a soft top Jeep, or whatever other SUV its not so bad, but overall? yeah its not quiet.

Thanks for chiming in. We have 2 german cars that are extremely quiet and I've realized that can actually detract from the driving experience too. They are boring to drive unless driving well over the speed limits or doing a track day. Sounds like the LC is a good balance for people who drive for enjoyment.

This is how I feel...while I don't want it drowning out conversation or being a distraction, I do want to be able to hear the engine rev, and I want to be able to detect changes in road or wind noise.

I've owned some pretty loud vehicles before, but this ain't one of them...however it's also certainly not quite on par with something designed with "luxury" first and foremost either

My hubby and I find this quieter than our previous vehicles. He has good hearing and was impressed, relatively. I like it as I feel I can hear or not hear to my comfort.

Tires. 1958 comes with soft, smooth highway tires (Yokohama Geolandar X-CV). GX 550 Overtrail+ comes with off-road tires (Toyo Open Country A/T III GA) which are quite noisy.

My 2024 LC 1958 is very quiet at highway speeds. There is noticeable wind noise above 65-70 mph, but this mostly because the engine and tires are very quiet, so nothing masks the wind noise. Road noise from other vehicles is noticeable because the LC doesn't have acoustic (sound absorbing) glass. Engine gets noisy under acceleration, but is barely perceptible at steady speeds.
Overall, the LC is more quiet that my 2018 Toyota Highlander at stead highway speeds, but engine is noisier during acceleration. The LC is also less sensitive to road surface type - the tires are quiet no matter how smooth or rough the road is. But this is 100% thanks to the tires, not the vehicle.
The LC is about as noisy as my wife's Lexus NX below 60-65 mph, and more noisy at higher speeds. The Lexus isolates street / road noise much better thanks to acoustic glass, though.

If you say so! I came from a Mercedes and would love to have that level of quiet in the LC.

As many have mentioned, it is very quiet and well insulated for its shape. The biggest culprit is the side mirrors, of course.

Significantly quieter than LR / RRs as their windshields leak air at speed and the interior creeks and rattles from brand new.

Pretty quiet, but let’s get scientific!

I’ve got a FE with 265 Toyo AT3s (E Load) tires and a Yakima ski rack sitting on top of the FE rack. I’ll test the dB road noise with my Apple Watch resting on the center console when I head out later.

Will report back.

With that setup, a 40' Cigarette boat with triple 496 Mags with thru hull exhaust at cold start would be a hair quieter.
