Firearms, Hunting, Shooting Sports

Jump shooting is fun, just not a traditional hunt but also doesn’t require 4am wakeups!

Ponds are so small here and we’re so far from the normal fly way that setting up a blind and decoys would be a lot of work for very little return.

We usually bring along a scoped .22LR and hunt rabbits along with ducks. Pretty common to see way more rabbits than ducks.

I carry a suppressed .22 pistol during deer season. Squirrels and armadillos become targets of opportunity.

Not a hunting guy (grew up in CA. left and never went back). All my gun training came from my JROTC instructors (believe it or not they still had pistol and rifle teams in public high schools in San Francisco back in the 80s) and then through various military organizations. I also am a trigger snob, preferring HKs.

I exclusively do target shooting with my bolt-action rifle and shotgun, but I have taken my hunter safety course and would like to bag a whitetail and a grouse at some point in my life. A buck with some nice antlers would be nice, get a wall mount commissioned. I don't think the public land issue exists up here in Canada. The Crown owns so much of it, I don't think it's hard to find a quiet spot.

Glad I found this thread. I live in the "People's Republic of Maryland" so since Bruen i've been carrying my G19. Just has an SRO, light and grip tape. Used to shoot 3 gun but haven't shot a match in a couple years. Itching to get back into it. Rifle is LWRC, owned many rifles but this is by far my favorite. I also built a suppressed AR9 that is a blast with subsonic 9mm.

Yeah I’m rocking a G43x COA with the integrated Aimpoint RDS. My late father wore bifocals, and I know someday I’ll probably be in the same boat. So learning slide mounted optics now before I have no choice. Trigger replaced with a Johnny Glock 4311. Cleaned up the pull weight a bit, but more importantly got rid of the horrendous over travel.

It can easily hold the head box of an IPSC target at 25 yards, even before the trigger upgrade. Now it’s actually fun to train with.

Zero’d easily enough at 15 yards, windage was spot on out of the box and elevation was only a little high on the Aimpoint for CCI Speer Gold Dot.

RDS are the way.

I shoot only Swiss ordnance guns, mainly a mousqueton 1931 (Mq. 31 or Kar. 31) , and a mousqueton à lunette 1955 (Mq. Lu. 55 or Zf. Kar. 55) at 300m with good old cheap GP11 and a SIG P226 at 50m. Shooting with ordnance guns is cheap because owner have access to military ranges and amunitions which are usually open during spring and summer. In winter I shoot indoor with my P226, here at 50m standing, black circle is 20cm

I guess it had to happen sooner or later, what a shame. This forum was going so well.

My solution to the land owner problem would be to give them a choice.

1.) Allow walk in hunting and they get to enjoy land owner tags (a nice perk in South Dakota) otherwise they have to draw just like anyone else.

2.) If they lease hunting rights to an outfitter or charge trespass fees they forfeit their ability to claim agricultural rates for property taxes. You’re either running a farm/ranch, or a private game reserve (using state owned animals no less). Pick one, you don’t get both.
I can't even imagine the chaos #1 would cause. I would damn sure not allow just anyone running around freely on my land with long range firearms, or any firearms for that matter. Too many irresponsible idiots.

That’s fine. In my opinion making that choice as a property owner would just result in giving up eligibility for land owner tags if you own enough property to otherwise qualify for them. No big deal, you would just draw for tags like everyone else.

Why would that be chaos?

There is so much i could say, but will not.
We continue to try to get more to move to third world states, they do not, more come here, sad but true.
We shoot year round, Ca & Nevada, when we get out to 1 mile and beyond.
I best stop here or upset the continuum.
Yes, its shooting with the big kids here.

OK, well if you don’t want to participate in this discussion that’s fine.

I’ll bet you could make a go of whitetail where you’re at. Just get up north out of Ottawa, not that you want to go that far but I used to see a lot deer in the Thunder Bay Area.

For you long range guys, here is my setup. 300PRC Fierce carbon barrel. 5x25 Trijicon scope with dial up yardage turret - verified to 1000 yards though I can only shoot to 600 here. It now has a suppressor on it. This photo was in Mongolia. Shoots Hornady 212gr ELDX. I wish I could get a more hearty bullet to shoot as well.

Is the ELD-X not holding up in game animals? Kind of surprising for a monolithic construction bullet.

I haven’t used a .30 cal for hunting in a long time so I’m not up to speed on hunting bullets much heavier than a 210-215gr pill unless you want to sling heavy round nose style bullets, and I’m guessing that is not the goal.

What is barrel twist rate? An all copper 215 is a long boy and I’m not sure you will stabilize an even heavier monolithic bullet given how long it would be, unless you’re running a really fast twist rate barrel.

Yes ELDX come apart pretty badly at 250 and in. Once they slow down down range, much better. The PRCs usually use heavy for caliber bullets, and they are really long and the ballistic coefficient is excellent. Long slender, aerodynamic bullets just hold up at distance and are incredibly accurate. Same with 6.5 PRC or Creedmore - etc. Twist is 1:9

Yep I’m busy chucking 130gr to 147gr Hornady ELD-M out of the AI, barrel is a Wintac chambered Bartlein with a 1:8” 6.5CM. I am debating between a .22 Creedmoor or 6mm Creedmoor next, just need the barrel since the Accuracy International AT action can easily swap barrels.

If I can ever score a spare bolt assembly I will have the bolt face opened up to .532-.535” to run short magnums and the 6.5mm PRC.
