I guess we'll have to buckle up and see if OP's mileage improves, or whether it becomes a deal breaker for him.

Whether the attainable mpg in the future is suitable for him is subjective, and had I not come from driving a 4wd piggy on wheels with our Land Cruiser being a step up in terms of economy for me, I'd still be somewhat impressed given the size/weight of the Land Cruiser, the power it delivers and doing that with all wheels being driven full time. Some of the alternative SUVs have all wheel drive systems that default to front wheel drive the majority of the time (when no slip is detected), which helps vehicles like those deliver better mileage numbers.

And the best ones use Magenti-Marelli drivetrains and stay RWD as god intended. (World rally's best system currently.)

Good observation skills =Idling (a few of you) = I live close to the coast and my LC has been all fogged up early in the morning - so before I take my son to school I squeegee all the outside windows and then run the defroster for approx 3/4 mins before leaving- am I a numb nuts for not thinking this would hurt my MPG (don't answer the Numb Nuts

As far as the new tires go, even if they don’t improve my MPG by much, I’ll at least sleep better knowing I’ve got a top-rated brand (Nitto) on the truck instead of some cut-rate off-brand (Delium). I’d be really pissed if I hadn’t negotiated that rip-off $4,400 tire and wheel package down by $3K—I was ready to have them put the OEMs back on - which they opposed doing. My 12 year old son was with me & of course he loved the monster truck set-up.

You know what's funny - at least so far - my Aston Martin DB9 gets better MPG than my LC:

• Engine type: 5.9-liter (5935cc) V12
• Configuration: Naturally aspirated, DOHC, 48-valve (4 valves per cylinder)
• Material: All-aluminum block and heads
• Horsepower: ~450 hp @ 6,000 rpm
• Torque: ~420 lb-ft @ 5,000 rpm

Yeah I have a rich cousin - who is not a gear-head like me - he bought it new in 2005 for a $190k - 2 years later with 3k miles he sold it to me for $60k & I've been loving it ever since. It's weird Carfax shows me as the only owner. Not a cheep car to maintain - that's for sure.

Reason I passed on the Aston Martin as much as they are a dream car. My last coupe was a Maserati GTS which was flawless for the 5 years I owned it, but hated the dirt road to my home at Sugarloaf. Last sedan was my 2004 JAG XJ VDP.....I have NO need for a sedan or non trackable coupe in my life. My 4C will have most of the big heavy HP for lunch on track.

I like the Alfa 4c's a lot - does it have a Toyota engine or is that another model - I used to drive a 70's Alfa spider (red) - thought I was pretty cool. My 05 DB9 only has 14.5k miles on it = garage queen - I do get it out most weekends weather permitting for a short drive. The front end scraps like sh*8T and would not like your driveway. As my late father used to say "Machines like to Run." And the Lock wheels that came on my LC are Legit - I like them & will keep them with new tires - look great and 30.5lbs. It is the tires that are bogus.

If I drive more than 10 miles in a sedan - for whatever reason I get Sciatica bad (sitting low to the ground)- plus in LA where everyone's jacking around distracted texting etc - you do not want to be low to the ground - dead man walking.

I think a plug-in hybrid is a little different than our Land Cruiser hybrid setup. A plug-in is designed to run solely on electric for a designated distance, so when you first start the vehicle you should have plenty of charge to idle and drive 30+ miles solely on electric before the engine kicks on. With the Land Cruiser electric intending to deliver torque when needed, the default is the regular engine.

Between the tires and your idling, I think the forum has solved your mystery.

New tires - short trip looks to have improved my mpg by approx 3mph on same hilly route - tire installer could not believe how much those Deliums weighed - he estimated 10lbs more than my Nittos. At one point on my drive I was averaging 17.8 mpg before I hit the hills. I'm stoked.
