Adaptive cruise almost caused an accident

Some chimes and warnings are fine. I like the blind spot warning on the side mirrors but hate the seatbelt chime. It’s the autonomous driving aids I don’t have any use for. Auto pilot to allow me to occupy my mind with things other than driving???………checking my messages, answering emails, watching a video……..no thanks, I’ll pass.
Technically speaking autonomous driving did not free you up to do all these things as there is still the driver monitoring camera watching you. But I’d admit Toyota did not make the model accurate enough to rigorously demand your eyes on the road. I’ll just describe this as “using the tool wrong”. You can engage driving assistance (it is never an “autonomous driving” BTW) while use more your attention on your surrounding instead of only in front of your car to drive more predictably. You can also drive with less fatigue, which improves long distance driving risks. That is what really helps me to pace myself on hundreds of miles driving.

ADAS is just a tool. You can use the tool, or abandon it however you want. But it is never the tool’s fault. This whole Tesla “self driving fantasy” is 100% Elon Musk fault and they should be fined for more than a few billion. In a way Elon Musk is no better than Elizabeth Holmes. They misled a whole generation’s understanding where the technology is and has indirectly hurt so many people along their market campaign.

Ha! The driver monitor is the first thing I turned off. I’ll be the one to "rigorously demand my eyes on the road". If it works for you and you enjoy it, have fun!

That driver monitor thing is something I'm really happy did not come on the 1958. Have you seen the new requirements for vehicles in 2027? I won't be having a vehicle that watches, analyzes, and decides whether I am fit to drive it. That's essentially what the new requirement will be in new vehicles.

If that’s the case and it can’t be disabled, this ‘26 will be the last new car I buy. Actually right now I’m keeping my eyes open for a nicely done ’66-67 Nova restomod………no "driver aids”. Come to think of it, I’ve never liked being told what to do by man nor machine.

I've also been looking for a 67 Impala to restore and also do a restomod on

It isn't a Tesla. You're going to need to break for red lights.
Actually, even if you are driving a Tesla, breaking for the red lights is safer. When your home computer has a glitch, you can always restart it, but...

I only use the adaptive cruise on long highway drives I just don’t trust it enough for in town driving. I want to be in control as much as possible. Things can change in the blink of an eye. I would venture to say that the adaptive cruise radar didn’t pick up the car because the landscaping trail was probably bigger than the can and it was tracking that and didn’t capture the size difference in time.
Not trusting the adaptive cruise is the best policy...

I must be really old fashioned…….I turn off ALL the nags and nannys possible. Never use any type of cruise control. Try to keep my mind 100% on the task at hand which is driving not going along for the ride……..I think I’m a dinosaur. The thought of owning a self-driving car makes me shudder.
I'm mostly the same way, but admit that I do appreciate the radar-assisted cruise control and use it when sensible.

I won't even try to use it in inclement weather or when traffic is heavy enough that I expect speeds will be variable...but when you're just cruising at constant rate for miles on end, it's kinda nice to be able to set a speed and not have to keep my foot on the gas pedal, while also knowing it can make slight adjustments based on other cars on the road when needed.

I cancel it pretty much as soon as I come up on anything requiring more manual intervention though...and definitely don't treat it as an "autonomous driving system"...I'm always alert and ready to take over.

O.K., so you're a dinosaur, but you are still alive....
