1958 Arm Rests Padding

Hello Everyone,

Anyone with a 1958 figure out how to pad the drivers and passenger side arm rests?

Might not be a bid deal for most, but I would like to have something to rest my elbow on

It was definitely a deal for me too. Fixing that was one of the first improvements. Went to a local, old school (old as in been around for decades) car upholstery shop. I told him I wanted padding, showed him where my elbow hits (on both doors), and said I didn’t want the door panel removed to do it. This is what he did for me. It’s been on a year now without any issues. I enjoy it every. single. time. I use it.

First, just to clarify: @Luigi post about the armrest appears to cover only the top padded cap. On a 1958 Land Cruiser, that upper piece is typically just the padded panel, while the lower armrest section is plastic.

The question a lot of us have been asking—across this thread and others—is whether there’s a real solution for the 1958’s plastic lower armrest, not just another small add-on cushion @4RunnerJay .

I’m actively working on a proper fix with two upholstery shops. To be candid, it’s been pretty frustrating seeing the same small Amazon-style cushion repeatedly suggested as “the” solution. In my opinion, that approach is a poor fit for what we’re trying to solve.

If anyone is willing to donate a door panel for prototyping, please DM me. I’m expecting to have a workable direction within the next couple of days.

What’s also puzzling is that there are already aftermarket solutions overseas for other 1958 gaps (like the missing wireless charging pad), yet this armrest issue still hasn’t been properly addressed. I don’t understand why it’s been so difficult.

So, if you’ve found anything genuinely useful—research, a vendor, a different approach, photos of a proven setup—please share it. Even a small lead could help guide what we finalize with the upholstery shops.

I've been using these for several months, they're perfect. Similar to what's been available in Australia for the 70/200 series for decades.

I’m with you, only concerned about lower armrest. Want it to look stock, might cut up a computer mouse pad to size for now to add some cushion

I built this from some really high end motorcycle seat gel and some alcantera over one of the plastic covers for the center arm rest. I'll do something similar for the lower arm rest next.

My side job is building some very exclusive high end rifles, and I've been using this technique to make a very comfy cheek weld on our rifle stocks (a little more refined).

The Gel is very comfy and transmits very little vibration (or recoil). I'm guessing it will work just fine. The only gel piece I had left over was smaller than the center armrest piece so I only did the top section, if I was going to do it again, I would get a piece big enough to cover the whole piece and then shape the edges so it didn't have such angles on the side.

But everyone knows the story of the cobblers kids - they never have good shoes!

Hell, I dont know the last time I cleaned one of my personal rifles or managed to get out to the range for anything that wasn't confirming sub moa accuracy on a customers rifle or displaying what one of ours can do.

I got these. Pricey for sure, but they are awesome. Game changer for me and my comfort level while driving. I tried to only get a drivers side for half the money, but they said no

Yes, pricey, but like you said a game changer specially on long drives! Install was pretty simple though it can look intimidating.

These finally came in today. Def going to add some better (and thicker) double sided tape under them, and they might need a little trimming.

When I start taking apart the doors I'm going to do the stock arm rest in suede.

They are going to be sick.

I want to throw out another DIY option that has been night and day for me. Looks much better in person than these pics.

Basic Steps:

• Make a template of the upper and lower door armrests.
  • You might allow for a little bit of extra material as the door panel rolls from upper to side.
• Use template upside down to trace on to back of the leather roll
• Peel about a quarter of the backing to start applying to door
• Take your time and use the window-side straight line as your guide
• Done!

*You can see I double-layered mine where my elbow actually lays. Use the shorter layer underneath. I will be redoing my lower armrest to cover that entire piece. I only had some scrap left, so tested it out.
