Wound up in an emergency situation over the weekend, we managed it but I need some advise. Spouse was driving and had an incapacitating medical emergency. I was able to grab the wheel and thankfully due to the incline able to slow down, get off the road, in the process spouse came around and was able to apply the brake. Everyone is fine, no other cars on the road at the time etc. I knew I could throw the LC into Neutral but without a manual parking brake, what are the options for actually stopping? Figured I would ask here as I am not overly interested in trying to recreate this just to try it out. That damn center console is so big that it’s impossible to get to the foot peddles on the other side from the passenger side. (Before anyone gets judgy, this has never happened before)

You’re supposed to pull up on the ebrake and keep holding it up until you stop. Once stopped, it should completely engage the brake.
Note that I cannot find that in searching the manual. That’s how it works in an emergency for Subaru and GM vehicles. All our past Toyotas had old style e brakes.

1958 model doesn’t have that feature.
Not sure shifting to Park would work, at least without causing damage or loss of control. Holding the E-brake button sounds like a winner. You can also manually shift to lower gears to slow down a bit assuming incapacitated person is not pressing accelerator and you have road ahead for deceleration. There's always rear-ending a moving car in front of you. They will apply their brakes to slow you down.

We are all okay. Luckily, no one was on the road, we were on a slight incline which helped and pressure on the accelerator was reduced. I was running through my options wishing for a manual parking break. Especially since we were towing a trailer. I would have dropped my transmission by slamming it into park before willingly hitting someone else. Thankfully that wasn’t necessary.

You need to read the description of the parking brake fully. Putting it in park and enables the LC to automaticly apply the parking brake and putting it in gear automatically releases the parking brake. Also note that in the settings of the vehicle, not sure where, this behavior can be enabled or disabled.
The parking brake will still work manually if you just pull it up the switch. No need for the nonsense in that first post saying you have to put it in park. If you’re moving and in gear, just pull up the switch.

I'd be hesitant to shift from drive through reverse to park with the vehicle moving, so I'm glad the option of lifting up on the parking brake was brought up.

Yes, +2. I would very much like for anyone (not me) to test out the parking break while moving theory. I'd like to know if it works, but also don't want to know that it works on my LC specifically

I used to instruct for a major car company in very fast cars. At least for Porsche it’s the same, hold the e brake button after popping it into neutral.

@Below32, I just tested it in my 2025 TJH250L-GNZAZA and confirmed it works. Probably on other variants as well, but others would need to confirm. You certainly don’t need to shift into park first, which would defeat the very premise of the idea. The vehicle beeps and fairly rapidly decelerates to a stop.

Thank you! Considering we had our trailer in tow, I admit I considered it at the time but was unsure if it would send the vehicle into a situation that I couldn’t steer out of from the passenger seat.
