I thought I read that the gap is functional in helping to clear water from the wipers. If that is true, wouldn't these gap fillers reduce the effectiveness of the wipers?

I personally don't see how the strips would hinder that. I had the strips until the windshield replacement and I never had a problem. The water still gets directed to the same place whether you have them or not. That's my 2 cents...

You put one cigarette in each side and put the molding over them to keep them dry. The strips are really just so you can turn your cruiser into a cigarette case

Or that. The point is to stick them to a part that isn't the glass so you don't have to buy them every time you get a windshield. I assume the ones the dealer installed were stuck to the glass so they went with the old windshield...

Huh? they aren't designed to stick to the trim. Should my windshield ever have to be replaced, I'll have to replace them as well.

Maybe not designed to but fills the gap just the same.
